I posted in the marketplace with a question for Rick. Mainly addressing him, because if we decide to get the runes they will come from him. I thought it might be a little better to post here and get some feedback from all you experts!;)

Our son, Trey, is six and is very interested in magikal things. He loves my tarot cards etc. I was looking at some runes online one day a few weeks ago and he said..."I want some of those rocks." I just chalked it up to him wanting everything he sees, but now that I ponder it a little more he came up said his peice and walked away. I just can't shake the feeling that maybe he REALLY wants/needs them.

My next question is how easy would it be to orient him to at least the names of each rune and later go into detailed meanings? Freyja, you know Trey, so probably have the best idea of how his mind works!

To tell the truth, I know very little...ok nothing about runes and would be learning right along with him. I just wanted a lil feedback. Much appreciated, as always.

BTW, he also told me he wants a crystal ball like Jareth has on Labryinth!! LOL, and today at Tee-ball, he said he wanted to fly on brooms instead of play Tee-ball....damn Harry Potter!! I think we have a Merlin in the makes!

I did a quick search in yahoo, I found a couple of links that might help.

the first one is a page that tells what Runes are in a way that a child can understand.

this one is a rune activity set

...or Rune stance, (sometimes called Runic yoga), was originally used by the ancients to teach the Rune staves to their children. It demonstrates the shape, name, & phonetic sound of each Rune. The best book I know on this (well, that wasn't written in the 1930's, so might still be in print :D ) is called Helrunar by Jan Fries (1997 Mandrake of Oxford, pub.)

I would also try the method with which I taught my own kids to read, which is the system used for teaching brain-damaged children to read!

You can simply make a set of flash cards. On the front, you would draw the rune and on the back the name of the rune (so that you know what you are showing to him). The letters should be written in red and no more than two inches high. You simply spend a few minutes each day showing the cards to Trey - you just show him the card, say the name of the rune and move on. When he gets the symbols and names down, you could make another set with the name of the rune on the front and the meaning on the back and repeat the same process.

The system was invented by a mother of a brain damaged child who figured out that her son could recognize McDonald's and Burger King by simple sight recognition. I did this with my kids and they thought of it as a game and would ask every day if we could do our words! They all had advanced reading levels by the time they were enrolled in first grade.

I have a buddy who makes up stories about stuff he wants to remember. It’s very odd but he says it works. Like those kids books about feelings. They were like little shapes and they all had the name of an emotion and they always acted like that emotion. It’s basically along that idea. I have many stories about the immune system, but hey it works, even if it is dumb. 8O It’s one of those things that are just so odd that they stick in your head. That’s how I remember tarot meanings (I’m still working on a few stories tho). :D

Thanks Freyja!

I used the flash cards with the alphabet when Trey was 2 and he learned very well with them. I can't believe I didn't think of it myself. I did it all through nursing school and with tarot myself!

I will definately get started on making some flash cards...uh one more request. I have been reading the stuck thread about each rune, but some of them lack pronounciation guides and I am afraid I am clueless...any help availiable? I just want to teach him the correct way!

Chibi-Fallon,
Thanks for the story idea! We did an exercise in Tarot early on where we toldan ongoing story using tarot cards. Each person drew a card when it was their turn and then proceeded with the story using the cards meaning as a guide. It was very fun and a great learning experience. I am sure you could locate it pretty easy if you wanted to give it a look.!

Thanks again and I will order the book and let you all know how it is going. Who knows, before long we could have a new, young reader for the forums.

RIck...is there a metaphysical fair planned for Tulsa anytime soon??? If not you should get on it!! I happen to know the man who does booking for Econo lodge now. Mol set up his computer system recently too. Hope to see you soon.

I myself have started to teach my lil' one bout' Runes recently.... like if she has a tummy ache i paint a Rune on her tummy and as i do it, on the count of 3, she repeats the Rune with me... I think its rad because shes learning the Rune name itself as well as a lil' bit of the meaning. She enjoys it, its obvious.... I think its great that you would be learning together.... great Mommy/Son quality time....

Hehe .. i stole the idea of flash cards for my own use. So i can memorise the names and the runes. I want to be able to recognise both, so the names will be on one side and the runes the other, with not clue to whats on the other side cause i'm using thick paper :).

Rick,
We will be there for sure! I just asked Trey what color he would like the best and he said...black, several times I repeated the question and showed him pictures of runes and he still says black...so there you have it!

Freyja...maybe we can go together!

Manstranger, it is a great method. I used to use index cards and write questions on one side and answers on the back. I had thousands and thousands of them all over the house. Mol was so glad when I graduated and he didn't have to worry about me having a cow if he moved a stack or put them together, (I had a definate system!!) When I was trying to recall the info on test day, I could picture the cards in my mind, even the writing. Good Luck to you!
