View Full Version : mowing the lawn

Just found out that in my city it's the by-law to mow one's lawn (doesn't affect me as I live in an apartment, though). The neighbours can actually report you (and then you get a notice) if you leave it growing. Well, I understand that people don't wish the weeds to spread and many don't appreciate the beauty of the dandelion, but what if someone likes long grass? It seems to me that we are too obsessed with controlling the nature.

i agree... i have a friend who lives in Canada... and she said in her town... if you have dandelions in your yard ... and you dont treat them.. the city will do it for you and send you a bill...:(

well my boyfriend and i were very busy in the spring..... ok the grass didn't get cut and grew quite long...we had every neighbor coming over and complaining!!! Yelling at my boyfriend saying "when your mother was alive it wouldn't have gotten this way" ...Thanks people remind him his mother just died!!! (this is why we just put up a big fence....)

That's me alright... I'm kinda glad I still live with my parents - they do all the yard work (thank goodness, that would be murder with my allergies). 8O

What if you want to plant a meadow garden in your front yard?

Yeah, this was a big problem when my parents were getting divorced. We didn't have the money to have our large yard mowed and we were all too small to do it. My Mom was sick. The neighbors complained and tried to get an ordinance passed. They did and finally the only real "neigbor" we had came and did it on his riding mower once a week. He's a jewel.

Most ordinances like those are passed not based on looks but based on the idea that tall grass harbors snakes and ticks etc. It's considered a health hazard.

Me I think grass and lawns are stupid concepts to begin with. If you have a lawn you just have to keep it up by doing something strenuous and sweat once a week. I say plant flowers and sit and weed them while humming ever couple of weeks. Or just pour concrete. :)

 I'm not so sure about the concrete thing:T
but.....I have seen several yards that were completely landscaped so the owners had nothing to mow....NOTHING! I remember my brother saying that when he grew up he was gonna have artifical turf so he wouldn't have to mow. It's ironic now cause he's got a very large yard.8O

 Or rocks painted green? :D

WC~ I've often said I was going to get astro-turf if I ever had a lawn.... Hopefully it's not big.. or if it is, maybe I can hire someone to do it for me?

between my cars, my son's cars, his girlfriend's cars and the buick my daughter and son in law are trying to get running the only thing that seems to grow on my lawn is old cars.

Here in Tucson, we don't have lawns. It would be too much water to use to have to take care of them. Instead we all have gravel in the front yards. The yard at my mom's house is quite loverly. It's got two large chinaberry trees and a stone walkway to the house and all around is gravel (mixed with all the dead berries off the trees). And bushes...

See? A yard can be pretty and not need grass. Especially if your city is a "Water conservation is the most important thing!!" kind of city. :)

OMG That's hilarious!! I just got done asking my mother a couple of weeks ago if I could astro turf my room!! Heh, she said it was fine with her, but I'd have to pay for it.... I think whenever I get a job I'm going to actually do it, just to make her slap her forehead for telling me I could!! ;)

But what I was thinking was that isn't it the natural look of a grassblade to have its tip intact? Why does it have to be cut? Oh, OK, it looks tidy and all, but still...

The reason for requiring that grass be cut is like Mithrea said -- health reasons. Some folks would rather have cut grass than the critters it harbors. But with the cities getting larger and expanding out into the country.....it seems it's the wildlife that is HAVING to learn how to live with us.

But the folks requiring you to kill the dandelions! Now that's a bit much.

Gunner, I don't know where you live, but have you ever heard "Ya might be a redneck if......":T (Don't worry, my deep freeze sits on my front porch!

southeastern vermont just above the massachusetts line and thank what gods there be for that 7 1/2 miles between me and massachusetts. it was enough of a pain in the tailfeathers having to get a mass. pistol permit when i was a working hired gun down there, i'd hate to have to live with that nonsense full time, but i'm retired now and my duty belt is gathering dust on a hook by the door.

YEP! I'm surronded by rednecks! And if ya follow what Jeff Foxworthy says, then I guess I am one....that's why I mentioned my deep freeze being on my front porch! On the internet somewhere I saw some Pagan redneck jokes....such as:
"Ya might be a Pagan Redneck if you...
-have ever used the tailgate of your truck for an alter"
I'll see if I can't find that site again.

I thought they were funny anyway!
