The magic of Winter Solstice

Shhhh. It’s the darkest time of year and the children are sleeping, dreaming of presents and play.

At Winter Solstice, the Sun is at its most Northern declination (the Tropic of Cancer), making the nights longer and the days very short. More darkness sets the mood to ponder the great mysteries of life. As we celebrate Christmas, the coming of the child savior, we celebrate the return of Light.

When the Sun reaches its Northern point at Winter Solstice,it seems to hang motionless for 12 days, before starting to move South once again. This simple act is always AWEsome and needs to be remembered and celebrated for the miracle it is. Sure, it “happens like clockwork”. That’s the point. The precision of the orbit is the miracle and mystery.

And as we end one year and begin another, we are reminded of the passing of time. What have you done with your year? Are you just “writing off” another bad year and not making any plans to make this one any different? If so, you may also be feeling frustrated with your (lack of) progress. Have you achieved your goals? Are you living your dreams? If your plan is to drift into 2008 and “see what happens”, you may have another year to “write off”. And as you see, the years are passing.

And that’s the magic of the New Year. We can get excited about life all over again! We get another chance to regenerate and start new. We can wake up to the wonder of life. And we can set new goals that challenge us to go further than we’ve ever gone before.

To feel the miracle of the New Year, you only need to quiet your mind and open your heart to all the appreciation you feel inside.

Thank you for sharing. I love new year's for the opportunity to begin again. I don't generally make specific resolutions. I look back and realize the year that is ending was very challenging and very miraculous. I feel very blessed right now.

What a wonderful reminder from the stars!

This is a serious Holiday Season this year; a wonderful time to make real and lasting changes in our lives. Read the aspects and consider how you can use all these energies to really improve your life? I also invite you to write a list of what you REALLY want from Santa On High, starting with Peace On Earth Goodwill Towards All Beings and then...what are your best prayers for yourself?

Jupiter conjunct Pluto
Tuesday, December 11

Extreme beliefs can provoke philosophical debates as opinionated Jupiter joins with intense Pluto for the first time in 13 years. A tendency to judge others harshly comes from exaggerated fears. When someone insists that they have all the answers, steer clear instead of falling into a frustrating debate. This is a time to empty ourselves of outmoded ideas and dreams, clear the deck of false expectations, make room for our deepest desires to emerge, and create a realistic plan to fulfill them.

Moon's North Node in Aquarius
Monday, December 17

The karmic point of evolution shifts from the Piscean realm of compassionate feelings to the Aquarian one of compassionate ideas. Development of community values and collective action is required to counter the egocentrism of the South Node in Leo. Learning to be more objective and seeing our individual stories as threads in the fabric of collective society will help restore balance during the next 18 months.

Jupiter in Capricorn
Tuesday, December 18, 12:12 pm PST, 3:12 pm EST

The planet of exuberant expansion may feel cramped in no-nonsense Capricorn where theories must be proven and success comes from sustained effort and commitment. Negative thinking about the future is possible in this sometimes cynical sign, but it may simply be that pragmatism returns to align our hopes for tomorrow with the realities of today. Speculators and drifting dreamers could suffer disappointment, yet those with discipline, patience and respect for earth's natural cycles can slowly construct their roads to success.

Saturn Retrograde
Wednesday, December 19

Saturn's penchant for order becomes more of an internal issue than one dependent upon the conditions set by others. Finding authority within ourselves is how we learn the mastery that gives a sense of organization and control to our lives. Being true to oneself is not a matter of living up to some lofty principles, but being as honest as we can about what we feel inside. Pretty or petty, noble or not, the truth of knowing where we stand makes it possible to go anywhere with confidence.

Mercury in Capricorn
Thursday, December 20, 6:43 am PST, 9:43 am EST

Mental Mercury is particularly rational in practical Capricorn. The mind's eye is directed toward problem-solving and organization to produce concrete results instead of vague speculation. While abstract thinking may be replaced with a narrower perspective, this is an excellent time for constructive conversations free of emotional excess and managing the complex procedures required for success.

Sun in Capricorn
Friday, December 21, 10:08 pm PST, Saturday, December 22, 1:08 am EST

The Winter Solstice (Summer in Sydney) is a time to set priorities. As we approach the end of 2007 it's natural to look back and assess your accomplishments and what remains to be done. Aiming high provides motivation to advance yourself personally and professionally. Establishing lofty goals offers the incentive needed to maintain focus throughout the year ahead. If you doubt that you can advance your ambitions, remember that you only have to take one step at a time to climb the highest mountain. There is no one else you need to impress; set your own schedule, be responsible to yourself, and you'll find the way. Keep showing up with a sense of purpose and a will to improve and you can reach the summit.

It is said that a chart done for the Winter Solstice gives us a picture of the next year, or at the very least a snapshot of what is to come the next 13 weeks. With Sun exactly conjunct Jupiter at 1 Capricorn, I'm sure there will be major power plays and new leadership come to the fore globally, especially with the quintile to Uranus. Though Mercury is separating its quintile to Uranus, expect inspired thinking and acting along lines that should show very quick expansion however this affects your chart.

Saturn, ruler of the Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter (while they are all in Capricorn), is in a very strong trine to all of these, showing sound growth and development along practical lines to consolidate the threshold state Saturn indicates at the degree of its retrograde station. ...However the Capricorn planets express themselves in our specific areas indicated by what houses they fall in, expect forms of self expression to come out that are original specialized expressions of what you've done before but unrelated to any tradition.

It's a Splay Jones pattern, so expect diverse activities that have little to do with each other and expressions that may at times be "at odds" with other needs. Of course, the primary influence is Mars in opposition to the Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter from Cancer on its way to the opposition with Pluto in Gemini on the way in early January. This will challenge us to get a grip on our assertiveness, take a new look at old rationalizations that don't serve the need for Soul expression, and breathe into the Uranian quintile-tredecile to the multiple oppositions.

So despite the polarizations and oppositions to come, there will be unique gifts, realizations, and interactive blessings to be captured if we can find a new inspiration and figure out how to manifest it in a form that serves some collective need or emptiness. I have no doubt there will be more than one radical "karmic confrontation" coming these next 90 days, with those who are immature or inexperienced having a lot to learn from those who are wiser from their experience.

With Mars retrograde, there may be a continuance of the feeling of the pace being slower than asphalt, and remember that a lot that has been and is being done will probably go through reversals or revisions at some point in the not so distant future. Also expect some things to crash in a big way in March 2008 due to the planetary positions.

Gosh I wish I had seen this sooner. I am still learning about astrology, and this is my favorite place to come for some real discussion.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season.

Winter Solstice and the Cancer Full Moon occur within a day of each other this year, on December 21-22 and then December 23rd. A full moon always asks us to become conscious of the purpose of what we instinctively start at the new moon. And with this Cancer Full Moon bringing to light the ‘Light’ being re-born now, it behooves us to look back and see where we have come from in this intense year. How did you grow and what have you learned since last Summer Solstice (when the Sun is in Cancer), which was also around the time of the last Neptune/Saturn opposition and Venus Retrograde?

With Winter Solstice, we arrive at a major shift in seasonal energy. The Light of the Sun begins to grow again, and slowly the darkness recedes. Ideally, it is a time to assume our autonomy – we are the mistress or master of our own domain. We know ourselves, our talents, and how to interact with others. Now we can step into the place of creation as a grown up Human Being. What new light are you giving birth to this Winter Solstice that you want to flourish in the New Year?

something i just noticed, when we had our cancer full moon, all major planets except neptune and pluto were in earth and water signs. ive been amazed out how lazy ive been since that full moon right before christmas. the strangest thing about this laziness though is that im still getting a lot done, and effectively too.

how has this time been fer yall? what happened when the moon went into leo? around the time the moon went into leo was the time i slipped into zombie mode for lack of sleep, and experienced my usual moon in leo anxieties (they come up invariably it seems) without actually caring about them. very therapuetic actually...

okay, so we've been back in this all earth and water thing since the moon went into virgo a couple days ago, but it all changes today (dec 30th) and tommorrow when the moon goes into libra, mars slips back into gemini, and venus goes into sagittarius.

and this all just occured to me now as i looked ahead for the next couple a days to see what was happenin, and im wondering what the astroweather change is gonna feel like. today is gonna be windy, with a 10% chance of venus fire...:apirate::o
