My husband and I have been married for 16 years come July 5th. I'm gonna try to post our wedding picture. (I've never done this before so bear with me and keep your fingers crossed.)
C:\My Documents\wedding.jpg
If it worked....we know the costumes aren't traditional Creek (his tribe) but it's what we wanted at the time.
Anyway, Happy Anniversary to us!

THANKS EVERYBODY!, The congradulations are appreciated! For someone who said she'd never get married and if she did she'd never have kids.....it's hard to believe it's 16 years and 3 kids later! And Old Witch is right....It ain't easy!
Flaire, I don't exactly study Native American history/cultures. I just pick up on what little were around. The Creeks aren't reservation Indians so my husband actually grew up in the white world. My husband was born in Oklahoma but his family moved here when he was young. Tennessee's N.A. population isn't that large. His mom is where we learn what little we know cause his grandmother doesn't talk about the traditions much. His great aunt is a wonderful source though. She taught at Indian schools when she was young. My husband spent some time in Cheerokee through his job and got a chance to learn there. He participated in some sweats and other traditions. He also learns alot through his job as he works directly with several Southern tribes. There he gets to meet alot of folks there that are Creek and share with him. He immediately shares with me what he learns. But we mostly learn through the Pow Wows that my husband serves as arena director for. The Pow Wow is where we meet the familys Medicine Man. The Medicine Man is where I first learned of Smoking and Smudging. We had just moved into a new place and the youngest was still just a rock-a -bye and the MM came to our home, smoked it and blessed it. I still remember my husband holding BR in a standing position with smoke swirling around those little baby legs and the MM fanning the grasses with Eagle feathers. I carried that wonderful feeling with me for weeks!

I need to give credit where credit is due, my mama-in-law made the dress and my husband's shirt, and the ribbon shirts that were worn by the grooms men and ushers. My mom made the ribbon dresses that were worn by brides maids and the flower girl. The flower girl (my sister-in-law) got married this past Nov. WOW, that's hard to believe!

Bumpin this up cause today's the day!:p
We don't have anything special planned. Maybe goin to the fiddlers jamboree. The middle son's got ball practice this afternoon. The brother-in-law and his honey are comin up and were cookin out.
One word of advise to those who are planning a wedding or hand-fasting.....................
don't do it on a holiday or close to a holiday if you think you might ever actually want to celebrate YOUR anniversary!
Course if ya got folks that live faraway and you want them with you for the actual event, somtimes ya got no choice!;)

Congratuations to you both on making it through16 years of laughter and tears. In these plastic wrapped, quicky divorce times, to see a couple make it together as you have makes my heart glad.
I was going to ask if it was a traditional NA wedding but then I saw the part about the flower girl. ;) Therese (my mate) saw the pisture & says the regalia ( they are NOT costumes or outfits people!!!) are beautiful!! She is a member of the Siletz Indian Nation herself.
may you have many, many, many years of smiles together.
Peace

oh by the way, I know what you mean about not getting married next to a holiday....we were married Dec. 26th, in order to accomodate relatives who were here for Christmas holiday. Whew, what a mess that was! But it turned out well.
I also said I would never get hitched, nor have children, and we have two. That's what you get for saying "never!" ha ha

:) Everybody, I appreciate all your well wishs and blessings. Like I said we didn't really "celebrate" but we stayed busy. Hubby, his brother, and his brother's honey went to the Fiddlers Jambroee while I took the middle son to ball practice. Then the next day we spent at the ball field for the middle son's state tourney of which they took 3rd place! :D (YEAH!) We also spent a good 2 hours with the truck in the shop as the rear seal busted! Go figure! Just thankful that it wasn't any more serious.
TWIG - your right, the clothing is called regalia. But in my orginal post I called it costumes cause I didn't know how to spell the other.8O And no it wasn't a traditional NA weddin....but you figured that our for yourself!;) It was a typical Christian wedding. My folks didn't really know what to think about my chosing the regalia instead of the typical white dress and tux's anyway! Daddy wouldn't wear any ribbons on his shirt. And my husband's Grandmother commented on the music cause it wasn't traditional Creek music. I justed used what my mama-in-law told me cause I had no clue! My folks hosted the event in their front yard, my uncle preformed the ceremony, my aunt catered it, and the hubby's uncle did the flowers, they were all wild flowers.
Anyway, enough of that. Onward and Forward with the next 16 years!:sunny:
