Looking for something else, I came across this article I wrote several years ago for a magazine. They didn't publish it - probably too Aquarius for them by far - and I forgot about it.
I LOVE Being An Aquarius!

One of my first measurable mystical experiences this life had to do with astrology. I was born into a very intellectual family where religion was considered evil and things like astrology and ESP simply didn't exist. This was so much the reality of my background that I had literally not heard the word "astrology" by the ripe age of 11.
Things were different back before the USA 60s experience. My family was extremely non-superstitious and scholarly; totally against anything they categorized as "weird", or "crazy" or "psychic" and of course, like many in my generation (Pluto in Leo) I was fully all three of these things and then some! Thus I had spiritual Helen Keller disease! I never saw or heard a thing about "Guides" or "Auras" or "Chakras" before the 1967, though I experienced all three (and then some) all the time.
Thus I was dumb. If I ever once dared to speak about these awareness' within my family I am sure I was taught not to bother a second time, very quickly, very young.
But one evening in Spring, age 11, I was browsing the magazine stand at the grocery store while my Mom was busy shopping. Seeing one of those little book-like magazines on astrology I picked it up and started reading it. I read the short descriptions of Aries through Pisces in the front of the magazine and suddenly the lights turned on and the music started playing and I finally had a language to speak with.
The truly magical/mystical part was that I already KNEW astrology and I KNEW that I already KNEW it - only problem was that I hadn't yet heard of reincarnation this life either! Still in some sense I completely KNEW that I was an astrologer in a past life or three!
Of course the biggest life shifting aspect of this experience was reading about myself! I was an Aquarius! Aquarius people are weird and crazy and psychic and they often really like to study astrology! They have lots of friends and are into saving the planet.
I remember I threw the magazine down instantly, as if it were a "Playboy" or something, when my Mom wheeled her cart into view. I chitchatted with her distractingly, and I prayed, calmly, pretending as if nothing had happened, but inside I was on fire. My whole universe had changed. For one thing Mom was suddenly a Pisces and Dad was a Virgo. I thus knew that there was no way they were going to understand me or support me in the manner I had hoped and wished that they would - no use trying to make them - and that was OK. It was just part of being an Aquarius, and gosh, I loved being an Aquarius from that very first exposure with astrology on. I still do!
I snuck back to the grocery and bought the magazine later. This was the beginning of my teenage "secret reading" habit. I read anything I could find on astrology and magic, but there wasn't very much information available. I also read romance novels; all behind my parent's back.
Yet learning about my horoscope was slow. The data and the math skills needed to calculate a chart were beyond my abilities to manifest back then. For those years I was simply an Aquarius and I discreetly asked everyone I met about their birthday, so that I knew their Sun Sign as well.
Of course in the next few years everything changed. Much to my joy and amazement I heard on the radio one day, in 1968, a piece of music that came from a Broadway musical called HAIR. I learned from that song that our whole planet was entering into the Age of Aquarius! Wow far out. I was ready!
Soon there were books available on astrology and other mystical topics and, thankfully, I was now more of a young adult so I finally managed to get my first real horoscope drawn up at age 16.
I had a Leo Moon!
Aquarius Sun, Leo Moon; ahhhh blessed permission from On-High to be my wild and idealistic, performance artist, self; and worry my parents sick!
I was so taken with this most basic expansion of my self awareness, Aquarius Sun, Leo Moon (and with all the activities of the 60s), that I didn't really start to understand the rest of my chart until much later in my life.
I freely admit that I have - unfortunately - studied astrology in hindsight.
"Wish I would have checked my horoscope before I made that first marriage at age 18! I married a man whose Sun was the exact same degree as my Saturn which is right on my descendant!"
"How could I have missed the obvious! Sun in Aquarius, Moon in Leo, Taurus Rising, Saturn in Scorpio on the descendant (insert funeral march music here); I have Fixed T Square or Fixed Cross!"
"North Node and Venus conjunct in the 8th house - hmmm, not only should I study astrology, I should probably pursue it, study it, love it, teach it!"
I still discreetly ask everyone I meet about their birthdays but I also inquire about where they were born and what time of day. My computer easily draws up their chart and I can share with people all the many things I wished I had bothered to explain to myself about my own horoscope down through my life. Sun and Moon have their important places but now it is the whole chart, the whole life, and how astrology can help us create balance, growth, joy, and live our highest destinies that inspires me the most.
A friend of mine has a little girl named Cyndi who is 10 years old. The other day I visited them and Cyndi was sitting on the couch reading a book about auras!
"What sign are you Cyndi?" I asked her.
"I am an Aquarius" she announced proudly.
"Me too!" I replied.
With a big ecstatic sigh, Cyndi declared happily, "I LOVE being an Aquarius!"
"Me too!" I concurred with a grin. "You know the rest of your chart?"
"No!"
"Well, you will soon because I will draw it up and teach you about it."
Cyndi seemed just as happy as I was when I first discovered astrology, but thankfully many things are different for her.
"Mommy! Mom!" she yelled running through the house, "What time of day was I born? I am getting my horoscope done!"
Cyndi's Pisces Mother soon appeared saying, "How wonderful for you! Maybe I will have Rose look at my chart too!"
Clearly the Age of Aquarius has dawned!
I am ready, because I LOVE being an Aquarius Sun, Leo Moon, Taurus Rising, Jupiter/Uranus conjunct in Cancer in the Third House, etc. - fully alive PERSON! Astrology has been a magical/mystical gift from the Divine down through my life, a constant encouragement and practical help in the exciting and challenging process of me being me.
