April 27, 2001 (KRQE News 13) Albuquerque, NM -
Albuquerque police made an arrest Thursday in a high-profile case of animal cruelty and they say more arrests are on the way.
This is a crime that's generated a public outcry in the city, and that apparently has helped police crack open the case. His name is Roberto Rodriguez Ortiz, and he's 27 years-old.
At least that's what he told arresting officers but a check at the immigration and naturalization services office in Albuquerque showed more than a dozen arrests since 1999.
This man, using a variety of aliases, has been picked up repeatedly by border patrol agents, trying to cross illegally in the US but investigators say Rodriguez Ortiz has now committed far more serious crimes.
"I don't know why they do this to my puppy. He was innocent," said Antonia Green, whose dog was burned alive, when a vandal broke into her home last week, distroying everything.
Police say the man broke into Antonia Green's home, and vandalized the place but he's also charged with torturing her seven month old puppy, and burning it alive in a bath tub.
The crime generated more than $5,000 dollars in reward money.
Det. Toby Gallegos of the Albuquerque Police commented, "Believe it or not, all the tips that we've received have been from concerned citizens not asking for money or any kind of help. So I'm sure the reward helped, but it hasn't played into the actual witnesses we've used so far."
Police believe Rodriguez Ortiz knew his victim well. He had been renting a room at Antonia Green's home for three months before the burglary. She allegedly threw him out just before the break-in.
Joel Warner with the Animal Humane Association says he's relieved by the arrest.
"I hope they get everybody that's involved with this because the community in response to the reward has shown they do not want this kind of activity in our community," said Warner.
A tip did lead to this arrest, but the reward in the case will not be given out just yet. That's because police say they expect to make more arrests in the next few days.

Oh my God!! Poor puppy!! I really hate when people torture/kill animals for no other reason than to get back at the owner. The animal didn't have anything to do with this. Why do people harm innocent animals like that? It's just way too sick to comprehend.

You are welcome.
My response was pretty simple ... I just said that it would involve duct tape, kerosene and a match, or duct tape and a vat of pure cinnamon oil. I wonder if they understood the cinnamon oil reference???

i'm not sure i should speak about this till i cool off, my present thoughts involve ideas like tieing a rope between his cojones and the rear bumper of my cruiser and seeing how fast he can run from 0 to 130mph.

Between this post and the wife beater t-shirt a** hole man, I feel sick. I hate watching and reading the news. To sound redundant and cliche-ed (is that a word?) I wonder what this world is coming too? I don't understand violence, esp when directed towards innocent women, children, and animals. This is a really sore subject for me.
*sigh*
Chris, hope the Law of Threes comes right back at him

Well, all I can say is that I hope he spends his next life as a German Shepard in China.
Torturing and killing animals has definately been linked to becoming a serial killer. I feel worse for the animals, though, because they are defenseless.

Kick some @$$!! <still the champ here>
In my area, the DTES, there are times that I have to give
the occasional male an attitude adjustment, for trying to
or assaulting a woman, or elderly people, or me, etc.

I think that the law is way too lenient on the crimes that people commit. Do you think that this man would have even done that if he knew his punishment would be exactly what he did to that poor little puppy? And another thing, animals are the trusting ones. They only do harm when threatened.

that's so very true!! especially when it's a little puppy!! I held this little 8 week old white puffball the other day and it was just so timid and sweet...you can tell it was scared cuz it didn't know who we were...but she was still a sweetheart and was giving us little kisses...I can't even imagine someone hurting this poor little sweetheart!!! I think that's about all I can say without starting to cry about this poor puppy again!!
