The berries contain miraculin, a rogue glycoprotein that tricks the tongue's taste-bud receptors into believing a sour food is actually sweet. People in parts of west Africa have been using the berries to sweeten sour food and drink for centuries, but it is only recently that the global food industry has cottoned on

Basicly Lemons taste like candy.

Has anyone had an experience with this? I am definately going to get a plant once I get back stateside. Great for dieting and sure to be a conversation piece. I even heard it makes Guinness taste like chocolate milk.

Apparently they are currently looking into isolating the chemical that is responsible in order to create desserts for diabetics.

I'm a diabetic & completely miserable about it. I will worship them if they can make it a little easier on us diabetics. LOL

Oh great, the USA FDA has banned its use as a sweetener. It can be used as a supplement, though.

You might interested in a diabetic friendly, natural sweetner called Xylitol:

it's also good for your teeth. Tom's of Maine uses it in their toothpastes.

That just means they'll ban it altogether soon enough.
