Okay I hope I am not stepping on any toes here. I am learning so much from these discussions that I couldn't wait to get the next card going. I haven't got my cards and books with me and I am not sure what I would have to add anyway at this point but I can't wait to hear what eveyone else has to say.

Okay no changes in the Reed deck this time so I can't screw it up

In the Witch's Tarot a nude man and woman stand holding hands. He looks to her and she looks to the large Goddess figure in the sky above her. The Goddess looks down on them and they all seem to be drenched in gold light.

In the Tarot Art Nouveau, The Lover (Les Amants, Die Liebenden, El Enamorado, Gli Amanti) The man and woman are both facing forward but still embraced in a passionate kiss. They are surrounded by roses, violets, and little fruit looking things I don't recognize.

In the Renaissance Deck, The Lovers (also Gli Amante ;) ) face forward and are holding hands. They are flanked by Aphrodite and Eros and the "doves that draw the goddesses chariot."

The Lover's card represents to me a deep spiritual love with another person or thing (object, idea, place, situation). It speaks of close relationships. It references to me the most significant relationship(s) the querent has. And those aren't always relationships with people ;) It can even speak of your relationship with yourself depending on the surrounding cards.

Where the Hierophant brings the Fool into contact with the systems, laws, order, etc of society, The Lovers card brings the Fool closer to the actual individuals that make up the society.

In readings the card asks the querent to examine their relationships more closely. The relationship with their self, their friends and family, their lover or spouse and all of their passions.

to me, the lovers card represents Duality...

Yin/Yang
positive and negative

astral/physical

right/ left brain

and the interplayu between the two working together providing balance and harmony :)

that is what I got , now I am going to read what the book says and see how off I was LOL

Lovers (http://www.learntarot.com/bigjpgs/maj06.jpg)

These are one of the cards I don't like, for some reason... Maybe it's because I'm a loner. :)

But I see this card as a very good relationship card, be it with an SO, BF/GF, or even family members! I feel that they have the blessing from the higher powers (hence the being in the sky. ;) )
But also, that it may be a forbidden love (the snake in the tree behind the female in the picture - and the burning tree behind the male....from Christianity...) if the two involved in the relationship aren't careful.

I agree with many of the responses here.

For me, Lovers indicate an intimate relationship. Open-ness and vulnerability, blessings, fertility. Light/dark, male/female. Protection.

I'm also going to bump a previous thread about the lovers, please check it out. ;)

I really like the Lovers card in the Robin Wood Deck - because it is bery much the yin-yang, moon goddess/sun god imagery. Ha! I was reading for family members and it turned up, and they freaked, because the Lovers in that deck are pretty graphically naked. They also look a lot like they might be the Magician and the High Priestess in the same deck ;)

In my Hanson Roberts deck, he looks a bit sad and leans on her shoulder, and she seems to be comforting him.

In my readings, the Lovers almost inevitably has to do with relationships. If other kinds of dualities, choices are involved, another card gives me that - if the lovers shows up, it always has to do with a relationship.

Right now it's in every reading I do for myself. Heh heh. And Wildchild can tell you, there's a reason for that. . .

For Universal Waite- I see the Lovers as a relationship, however; it is not necessarily an equal one. He is looking at her, yet she is looking at the angel above. Depending on the reading, I sometimes see that as a blessing, other times as an imbalance. Weird, I know. :p But I do usually see this as something to odo with a relationship, partners, intimacy etc.

I have been starting to work with The Celtic Dragon deck. In this deck, there is a forest dragon who, to me, is gazing lovingly at a water gragon. This represents attraction despite the wide differences of the two worlds they live in. Making choices and committments in a relationship. Trying to persevere despite odds, love conquers all. I think this is such a sweet card, and I feel the connection of the two dragons so much more intensely than of the couple in the UW deck.

Wow that is a really great card! & your description really touched me, I will remember more about commitments in the lovers from now on as I have always thought of choices..

Notice how the lover's always have an other element there with them, in your card the stork!
There's always a third, a triangle of sorts which makes the lover's for me, a card all about emoitons and choices ~ as love is a choice and has many choices within it.
I see the card describing a union and a sacrifice as one factor has to go so the two can balance, a choice has to be made for love to go one and floruish.

Dagda, I cannot tell you how much I am *loving* this deck. It makes me happy to even simply look at the cards.

Funny thing is, I was never able to get a thing out of them until recently. Last week, I dropped everything else I was doing just so I could start working with these cards. And now, bam! All these stories of the cards are just spilling into my head. The dragons and characters seem so close to me.

I am a nut!
:p
