View Full Version : Do the cards remind you of any films?

I was just thinking about how the Lover's card reminds me of the great love decision film 'When Harry Met Sally' and thought that it would be a fun new discussion subject for us all to play with :)

So ;) Does any card remind you of a film?

(We could even make a list at the end of this thread of all the cards and are chosen films :) )

Well . . . I am going to have to think of this some more.

However, my first response when I saw the subject line was . . . The Red Violin.

The story of the Red Violin is told through a Tarot Card Reading. It was amazing. I highly recommend it. ;)

I know that's not what you were asking about SV but I will think on it :D

actually, i played this game with my class a few years ago. i can't remember what all we came up with, but how about 'Forrest Gump' as the Fool? or maybe 'The Wizard of Oz'?

Well, the Devil makes me think of Amadeus both through the characters of Mozart himself and through Salieri.

And how about "Eyes Wide Shut" for The Tower?

I'm just adding them as they come to me. :)

Theres

or 'Eyes Wide Shut' could be the Devil (driven by those desires, to the detriment of all else)

how about 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir' for the Lovers? (i was thinking 'Casablanca' too)

Ohhh! I love the "Ghost and Mrs. Muir"! I have that movie :)

Makes me think of "Eyes of the Amaryllis" -- it could be lots of cards: The Hermit, Justice, The Sun, Judgement, and Death. Ah gods! I love that movie! Gonna go put it in now :D

And yah! I do see "Eyes Wide Shut" as the Devil as well. Good call! :)

i kept thinking of Dante's Divine Comedy for the Universe, and then i remembered 'What Dreams May Come', with Robin Williams.

and 'Inherit The Wind' might be a good Justice, although there are alot of movies that might fit that card as well. maybe 'High Plains Drifter' (hummm, that might be a better Judgement)

You know what? I just thought f "Legends of the fall" I loved that movie, and it makes me think of the Lover's card a little, but it also makes me think of the "Animal Spirit Knowledge Cards", probably because of the Native American feel...

The movie Pi would fit the Hanged Man or possibly the Hermit. The theme of knowledge and a man crippled by it but powerful from it as well seems to fit those cards.

oh, i LOVED 'Pi'. i thought it was better than 'Requiem...', and alot easier to watch too!

Me wont spoil it, :)

You have to see for yourself :) that is what makes the journey so exiting...

one can point the way.. but ultimately even though you have traveling companions... you go it alone at a certain point :)

:D sure thing..

I was thinking last night about this more and thought of Romeo and Juliet ~ how much more 'Lovers' could you get!

While I was still on Aeclectic.com we once started a 'Tinseltown Tarot' where we tried to put movie stars and TV stars with cards...we got most of the majors, but the Minors were few and far between.

The one that leaps immediately to mind was the 3 of Cups - Bette, Diane, and Goldie in 'The First Wives Club'.

Any more suggestions? My book has not gone to print yet, and I can still make additions.....

All contributions are welcome, but note - this list is within a publisher's hands, so anyone who may try to use this to produce a deck without permission from me or my publisher (New Falcon Press) is breaking copyright laws!

BTW - What's the definiton of ' theoricus ' ?

Mnemosyne
August 5th, 2002, 01:46 PM
Yeah, tarotbear, you are a theoricus. In Latin, that word means "speculative" and "meditative." Anyone has put that much thought into the cards is definitely thoughtful in my opinion. Will I ever be able to look at the cards the same again? :D I feel a connection to the Star and the Queen of Wands, but now I'm just going to think about Goldie Hawn and Hilary Clinton. lol

Well, the cards do remind me of a movie. I think about the Odyssey. I know, I know. The Odyssey is mainly thought as an epic poem. However, there are movie versions of this work. Odysseus reminds me of the Fool. He needs to take risks in order to succeed on his journey. Sometimes he makes mistakes; sometimes he acts wise. While on his journey, he meets all the cards at one time.

Wow the odyseey, I studied that at school for my a-level in classical civilisation :) Its a great epic! & Yeah totally the Fool, aswell as most of the other cards in the major arcana as all the books enfold.

Like your list tarotbear, my mind is a blank of more at the moment so Ill reply again when I think of a few..

How about the Ninth Gate, a scene in the movie shows a man hanged in the position of the hanged man.

tarotbear
November 30th, 2002, 12:28 PM
Ninth Gate - was Johnny Depp in that? I vaguely remember a film that had mucho hypo- there was even tarot decks from the movie for sale on eBay- then the picture opened, was the biggest bomb ( next to 'Ishtar'), and it all disappeared. I think the plot was that a certain layout of certain Cards called the devil, or some such crappola like that.

Unfortnately, the quick demise of the movie probably makes the deck a collectable-- like the 'Miss Cleo' deck that was sold at 'WalGreens"!

Seven of Wands reminds me of Erin Brockovich. "Against all odds she stood her ground and defended her beliefs."

I believe it was Brad Pitt..

I think I know the scene you're talking about, Blood Crow...But I wasn't really paying that much attention to the movie throughout it to remember exactly what was going on.. 8O
