ARRGGHH!! Ok..OK..Ineed a better strategy to deal with a severe runny nose. Now that my little monster is very mobile..he runs and screams when he sees a kleenex or the bulb sucky thingy. I have tried to suck it out, but it is too thin to do any good. His nose is very red and it is like a leaky faucet. I am trying not to wipe, but press the kleenex under his nose to soak up what is there..but with him squirming..it ends up being a wipe. Any good ideas to help stop a runny nose?? I know there will be some who will say it serves a purpose, of which I am sure..but right now....it is too much..it is getting everywhere..any great ideas??

LOL I had to laugh at the title of this thread. I dont have any help for you, being in the "it serves a purpose" trench, but a few interesting bits of runny nose trivia for you:

1) ya know how kids seem to like to stick out their tongues and lick the snot off their upper lip? It turns out that snot is full of antibodies....ewww, I know, just dont look when they do it and

2) kids do not develop a sinus cavity until the age of five which is why their snot runs down their nose instead of getting sucked back up inside like older kids and adults do.

Ok..that is just down right NASTY!!! Blucky!! Normally, I am ok with a runny nose..but this is constant.... and I am the type where I need to wipe it up..that is why I was asking for ideas...I am hoping that today it gets thicker..and then it won't run so much and I can suck it out..like that is any fun!!

Thanks for the trivia...I may need to skip lunch..but it was interesting!!

Vinny and hannah both have colds so i understand your frustration. vinny wont let me use the bulb to suck out his either. He hates his nose being wiped, but it has to be done.

I would say use a tissue that has aloe or something in it so its softer. I was reccomended by a doctor to use Aquaphor for vinnys diaper rashes and it can also be used for cracked skin/lips. (it's just like vasoline) You could put alittle on the area his nose that is red..

Good..I am not alone!! Iknow we have some of that stuff..I am just worried withit running so much and he likes to lick it..that he willend up eating the stuff..but I may have to do it..it's not too toxic is it!!??

I know what you mean about the bulb thing..Liam sees it and starts crying..you should see the full body lock I have him in just to do it. Afterward he looks like he went thru a storm...but a nukie and a hug..and allis right in the world. I hate waking him up in the morning with crusty nose and hearing him struggle to breathe. Poor baby. Colds suck!!

Im not sure if its toxic.. but it does say for cracked lips..? I'd only put a thin layer to cover the area thats sore/red.

Vinnys been extra fussy too lately because of his cold (yay me! Not!)

Puffs Plus with aloe is very soft and my little ones don't seem to object to it. If you can corral the little guy long enough, plain old chapstick on the upper lip protects it from the irritation.

Aquaphour isn't toxic in the amounts a kid is likely to consume licking it off his lips. If he ate the whole container it'd be time to call poison control...but not licking it off lips.

My lil Charlotte always had the opposite prob, hers would stuff up horribly & form snot dams where I would literally have to peel it off cuz her nostrils were completely blocked!! Eww I know... To this day, she is 8 mind you, she will let me use a "nose sucker" on her. Her adnoids are pretty gnarly obviously. She's mildly Autistic & does'nt blow her nose good enough.:(
Get the tissues with lotion in them & put vaseline or something like it where his poor lil nose is getting irritated. If he were old enough, you could have him wipe his nose himself that way he won't freak when he sees ya coming at him with the tissues, thats what I had to do with Charlotte. Won't be the greatest wipe job LOL but at least they can qipe up some of it. LOL

If I gave him the Kleenex..he would eat it..he is only 14 mos old...he was pretty cranky yesterday..but this AM..not crusty..but I could tell he was fullof snot..and I sucked up a few big greenies! I hope he is on his way to gettng better..but who knows. I think the weather we are having here does not help, which may mean he has seasonal allergies like all of us, its super warm one day, 20 hrs later it is below zero. Both Ellie and and myself get stuffed up during these dramatic weather swings. Oh well..belonging to the snot club is justone of the perks of motherhood right??!!
