I'm considering starting a project to take various myths and create a series of children's books from them. I know this has been done before, but there seem to be an abundance of Greek myth books for children, and fairy tales, but there are few if any books on Celtic, Norse, Egyptian, Native American, etc meant for children.

Is this because there's no market for these sorts of books?

For those of you who have kids, do they enjoy reading mythology, or hearing them read?

i don't have any young'uns but i remember when i was growing up i loooooved myths and fairytales. in fact, my dad got me started on myths (other than the usual fairytales by the bros grimm, hans christian anderson, etc.) by giving me a book of greek myths. i'd have loved to have gotten more and i think your idea is a great one!
maybe by the time i have kids you'll be a famous author! lol

I've been working on a series of picture books in this same area too. I can't imagine there ever not being a market for them - whether that market is aimed at Pagan, academic or school minded parents. I've only heard back from one publisher so far with a polite decline, but can't help being passionate about getting mythology to children at an early stage of development.

I am always looking for great mythology books from every culture for myself. Good ones are hard o fid, wtaere down, politcally correct ones tend to be more visible. I'd by far rather read the real stories, though the do change and evolve over he centuries. The real stories are less viloent than what most kids see on tv anyway.

Yes I would be interested. As a kid I read fables and fairytales. There are some links regarding those in another forum. I also loved my children's picture bible. I would definitely get stories about myths for kids.

I loved mythology as a kid, my daughter just learned roman & greek mythology in 6th grade but I think they should have covered more, like Native American etc. What a great idea! So get to it, so I can buy it!!! LOLOL

I have had a difficult time finding children's celtic mythology books. I haven't looked very hard though. I did post in the homeschool forum a while back with some mythology books (http://mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=154724)that I had found in a catalog, if you wanted to see some of the things that were out there already. But I know I would love to see more celtic stories out there for kids, there seem to be so few.

I agree there is a market for these books and I personally would love to see some that are more along the lines of what boys might like with battles blood and gore. Unfortunately with the sanitization disney and the like puts myths through before they market these stories, kids are getting the wrong impression about them. Hercules for example, was just a travesty.

I would have loved that as a kid. All I had was bible stories, and I still love them. my bf has them memorized and tells me them when I am upset now. I would love to read them to my own kids, bible stories as well as myths from around the world though it would be hard to convince billy to allow it. I hope he would. I would love to have books like that avalible when I have childeren of my own.
