View Full Version : Words you hate :(

When I was in college, we kept a list on the refrigerator of all the words we hate (for any reason -- but especially the ones that make you really *cringe* when you hear them). What would you put on the list?

Here are a few from my list:

Autumn
foyer
tragical
cult
feet
missy
barbeque

Anything derogatory against someone's race, sexual orientation, or gender.

cherrywind

"Gradded" instead of graduated. As in "I gradded grade 12".
Addicting instead of addictive. As in "gum is very addicting".

I guess that's more grammer than the actual word, but I just cannot stand those two things. And I hate the phrase "years young". In my books, you're only however many years young if you're actually getting younger with each passing year.

Definitely makes me want to :scream:

It's not the word, it's the pronunciation of the word...

When people say "Nucular" instead of "Nuclear"

Or when people say "Supposubly" instead of "Supposedly"

There's also the word Carribean, 'cause no one knows how to say it. :ugh:

I just thought of two more:

Ugly

and

Fat

I don't like these words... because everyone and their body is a work of art...and it bothers me when people disregard that. :(

"rag head"

racial slurs in general.

crude terms for sexual acts. "f*ck" "eat her out" etc

people using "love" when they don't mean it. I HATE hearing love if it's not meant. . .

"Beth Adams" because after a certain point in my life, my own name became an insult or thing to be feared, hearing it coming from stranger's mouths.

supercalifragalisticexpialidocious - because it is NOT the longest freakin word!! Flockeynockeynahilapilaphication is. . . I don't know if I spelled it right. . . it's in this huge diciontary somewhere. . . and it basically means "everything means nothing." But it is a real word!!!

I do not know. LOL :D

I have no real problem with "f*ck", but "eat her out"? Ick. Ick. Ick.

Hm, what else... For no real reason, I hate the word "teen". I'm perfectly okay with "teenager", but "teen" just makes me cringe. I have no idea why... Actually, come to think of it, I really dislike the word "adolescence" too. I think it sounds like a disease, or something.

**Grins** Creative use of the word, "dessert," should get you around that particular problem. :bigredgri

Anyway, my pet-peeve word is "can't." Some people use this after they've tried something. . . and that's okay. Others use it before they've tried, and that isn't okay. You don't know you can't do something until you've tried to do it, I figure--barring something ridiculously close to impossible, like flapping your arms to fly.

Dictionary.com didn't come up with anything for "Flockeynockeynahilapilaphication". . . **blinks** I had thought "disestablishmentarianism" was the longest English word, besides? :)

I hate the word "blather"
Don't ever tell me I'm blathering!!! :-P

Also, like Puma Hime said, I hate it when strangers say my name. Or even when friends say my whole name, that drives me nuts for some reason...

I hate when people use the word "then" when they really mean "than". Ex: The cat was bigger "then" the dog. I don't know why this bothers me.

The word that makes me cringe most would have to be "crotch". Ex: Her short skirt went all the way up to her "crotch". I'm all for profanity, but for some reason that word hits a nerve with me.

http://www.kokogiak.com/logolepsy/ has lots of obscure words. Even this one, which is a new word I'm adding to my personal Words I Hate list:

Fussock~ n. Big, fat woman.

Other words on my list are:

Kewl
Aight
Wuzzup
Productize
OEM, when it's used as a verb rather than as an acronym
Leverage, when it's used as anything other than a noun
F***, when it's used to actually decribe the sexual act. (When used as an expression in anger, I have fewer problems with it.)
C***, Pr***, P*ssy, Tw**, and all of the other assorted vulgar words for male and female sexual body parts.
Actually, calling them by silly names irritates the hell out of me, too, but at least it's better than these other tasteless words.

"Can't" when non-British people say it as "cahn't". If you don't say "cahn", then don't say "cahn't."

I hate it when people misuse the word 'well' and 'good'
ex. How are you, today? "I'm well thankyou." or I'm fine thanks.
NOT -how re you today? - I'm good. -no- that means you feel good ABOUT yourself like you have done charity work. hahaha.

Definetly the word "schedule." It really bothers me when people pronounce it as "shedule."

"Awesome" too. I'm on the swim team at my school and after the meets we have a "de-briefing." Everything is always,"Awesome job out there guys!" "You guys are just sooo awesome!"

Here's one more that is commonly used that I can't stand. "baby" or "babe" When it's used in reference to a significant other instead of an infant. I just don't like it. It annoys me. Luckily, I've never had a SO call me that.

Number 1 pet peeve:

AoL speak (no offense to anyone that uses it) :blushake: Eugh....

The phrase "politically correct", as in "I'm tired of being politically correct."
I can understand the attitude of wanting to express yourself, even if it offends people, but the way I hear that sentance used most of the time, the person usually appears to mean that they are tired of treating people who are different from them with respect.

i agree with Mist, I hate it when people use the word "like" needlessly: "hey like I was thinking that we could like um like go to the movies or like hang out at his house, like because his mom like isnt like home, dude."

and i totally agree with Flaire about the AoL speak.

non-inflammable

concilliatory

"extenuating circumstances" because some kid at my school had a really bad lisp and they made him do announcements and he had to say these words a few times everyday for like two months. It really got on my nerves (which is rather mean of me to say). but everytime i hear it now I cringe.

buddy, pal or anything like that

fag and dyke (nothing pisses me off more)

when my friend says "the 'rents" rather than "my parents" (waves to friend)

Jungian (i know there are times when use of this word is warranted but it seems to be used for no reason quite often and i hear it way too much)

defrocked (i hate it because i laugh uncontrollably for about 5 mins after hearing it. it never fails)

tragedy (its a word that to me has lost all meaning. i almost always get a feeling of insincerity from it)

My all-time most-hated word is mischevious, instead of mischievous. I hate it when people say it wrong, and here in Ga, it happens almost everytime someone says it. Also, when people say anywho, instead of anyhow or anyway. That happens mostly online, but has happened once or twice in mundania.

I have noticed that some of you disagree with the way a word is
pronounced and not the word itself. You also seem to agree to
disagree with the erroneous spellings of some words.

I am only bothered by the conjunction of two words. I shouldnt
be as I dont say it, but it makes me cringe. Any other word
spoken are relevant to when and how they are used. So, I have
no real problems with them.

In fact, I find a lot of them kewl.;)

I hate ... i hate.....

I HATE NET SPEAK! ARGH!!!

i just mean.. things like "kewl" instead of cool... and "j00" instead of you......etc... i just mean.................... what the hell!?!? ;)

i also hate slang terms for parts of the anatomy or sex...

male or female.... i remember hearing a kid going on and on and on using slang terms to describe sexual things.....first of all.. He's A KID!!!!!... ok.. so i felt like smacking him... lol ..... i was limited by the hundreds of miles data can travel but my hands can't ;)

right...well it's really that ... "l337" language ...I believe it's called..... that makes me want to kill some1... ;)

i hate rude language.....

i don't know.. i just find offensive language............ offensive...

sure I joke about it sometimes..... but really after a while it drives me insane when ppl use ... street slang.....or whatever it's called...

" yo yo dog, we gonna go hang out with my posse... "

oh yeah.....

i have the habit of saying "well..." , "like" , or "by the way" before each sentence ;)

well alright now really...

ah ok did it again!!! ..

now then ... this is a long post ain't it!!!

i ... and now I hate that word that i just saw here on the thread somewhere.... omg who invented that word!?!? THEY SHOULD DIE A PAINFUL DEATH!!!

what else do I hate... I hate referring to a lover as something other than just that...

if I wish to great the love of my life by something other than her name.... i simply say "oh goddess..."

ChelleOfShadows

so many of my least favorite words have been mentioned in the course of this thread. A few that were missed;

snatch, not as in I will snatch her baldheaded but as a reference to a female's sex.......

hoe - as in a woman who has sex for a living. A HOE is a gardening tool.....

s******ing - I had a college prof who used to complain of students laughing and would shout stop your idiotic s******ing.....

withdraweral - as in I want too make a withdraweral from my account..... please if you cannot say withdrawal just say I want to take some funds from my account.......

perscribe.... as in Dr, I have the flu would you perscribe me something.... grrrrrrr

combinations of words;

can I go with? What? If you don't know where I am going then how do you know you want to go??

Can you carry me to the store? Hell no you're heavy! Wouldn't it be easier if I gave you a ride in my car????

If it wouldn't be too much trouble..... Well you know it's trouble when that is the start of the sentence...... I walk away.

Just my 2 cents from the peanut gallery!

I hate it when people say "Conversate." Thats not a word. It's CONVERSE. Conversate is made up, and it sounds stupid to boot. I hate daytime tv.

And I hate it when people say, "ya know what I'm sayin'" after every single sentence. If I did not know what you were saying, I would ask.

I'm guilty of being a lazy typer when I type to my friends.. but I've seen from pretty horrific errors on my friends resume's and cover letters. Using Ppl instead of people, stuff like that. If you're typing to a friend, then I think it's fine. But if you're typing something that you are planning to send to a professional person, use a spell checker.

Also, the whole your; you're thing. It's not that hard. Or the there; their thing.

I remember I got one of those "Getting to know you" questionairre emails from an old friend. And the question was, "What is your least favorite subject in school." and she said, (and this is a direct quote) "English. I don't see why I have to go to skool to lern a language I gru up speeking. I can speek english just fine." Hookt on fonicks rillee werkt fer her.

Sorry to seem bitchy, but I just get so mad when I see people making simple mistakes. Typing is one thing, because there's always the chance that it's a typo, and not blatant stupidity, but when you actually speak with people, and they sound stupid, it ruins the entire conversation.

"Supposedly". Why? Because so many people say it incorrectly.

I think i've known at least four people who cannot say it correctly. Instead, they say "SupposANTly" which grates on my nerves more than words can describe.

Another one, is "Symbology". I'm not even sure if that is a word. I know SYMBOLISM is. And I LOVE the word Symbolism. But my husband has a really annoying habit of saying "Symbology" where I believe he should say "Symbolism".

Example "I loved the symbology in that movie". Blech!

It irks me when people speak in the third person... and are SERIOUS. Ok, I can take baby talk and speaking in the third person when it's all for fun and jokes... but when the person is serious, it's like *slaps forehead*

Another thing that annoys me is when people say b*tch... I don't mind if it it's used as in "someone's being a ..." and definately don't mind if it's used in its proper term... but it's when someone uses it instead of the word "girl" or "chick" or something like that. For instance "Yeah, these b*tches that we saw! They were some FINE b*tches!"

I also get annoyed with internet slang... it annoys me, simply because it all looks like a bunch of silly errors... I dunno, spelling just always came easy to me, so seeing people purposely spell things wrong just bothers me...

That and I hate any racial terms, or when people refer to someone by their race... we all know what the insulting words are. It's basically because at my school, caucasions are the minority, and being one of the only TWO caucasion girls in my P.E. class this year, I was "affectionately" called "Wetta" which basically means "White Girl" and it was allowed to happen... despite the fact that all the teachers know what it means... they just didn't care...

ir·re·gard·less (r-gärdls)
adv. Nonstandard

Regardless.

[Probably blend of irrespective, and regardless.]

Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is
used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.
