View Full Version : making own rune set

I was wondering if anyone has made their own rune set? Not out of the "make it yourself kits" that you can find at your favorite store, but out of stones, wood, etc.
I made my own out of citrine. I picked this stone as it doesn't need to be cleansed, not to mention I kept coming across it every place I looked when I was doing a search for stone meanings when choosing a stone to use. I used black oil based paint to paint the runes on the stones.
I didn't just pick any old one from the pile and start painting. What I did was, I put them in a bag big enough to stick my hand in and couldn't see them. Then I got out the various information that I came across on the meanings of the runes and read it outloud. Then I placed my hand in the bag and felt around while concentrating on the symbol of the rune, and the meaning. Then when one felt right in my fingers, I took it out of the bag and painted the rune on it. Did this for all of them. It took a few days for the paint to dry. After that I started carrying one I picked out of the pile each week, to get to know them.
I talked to the owner of one of the stores I frequent here in town and she said that she hasn't come across anyone in her life time who has made a rune set this way.
So just wondered if anyone else in this world has? :)

Looks like the threads have already been bumped up....thanks, Rick and Mithrea.
I've made a set from Scupley clay and plan to paint one on some glass stars that I found. I saw a very nice set this weekend that was crafted on those flat marbles used for crafts and floral arrangements........

I made both my sets from those glass beads that you find at the bottom of fish tanks, and painted the symbols on with acrylic paint. I have to say, they work real well when I use them. :)

River rocks are great, too, when you can find enough that are all around the same size........

I love Citrine! Its one of my favourite crystals and I actually tried to get some when I orginally made my runes, but then decided on Jasper..
Have you got a piccie of yours kcrys, they sound so pretty. Here's my Jasper runes

which I also made in a very similar way to you :) As each of the japser stones had there own 'marks' I also felt and looked for which ones went with which runes.

I not only made my own runes - I made my own meanings for each individual one from a runic alphabet not commonly (if at all) used for divination.
From Raymond Bucklands, Complete Book of Witchcraft , I found the Seax-Wica runic alphabet. I got the greatest feeling that I had to own runes with this alphabet..
After searching for a set of runes fitting to this requirement for over a year I decided I had to make them. I got some air drying clay from the hardware/craft/everything shop [Bunnings for those who have it in their country] and made my own runes and put the pictures on each one [30 in total].
I then gave a special meaning to each one using a method where I could easily assosiate the symbol with the meaning. I then meditated with each individual one which took me about a month.
For some reason they still made no sense when I read them so I put them aside and didn't look at them for just over a year. I found them after this time and thought I would 'play' with them - I was supprised at how accurate they were.
I have read all my family and all of my friends runes with amazing accuracy also. On one occasion I read runes for my sister in her absence. She then turned up so I got her to pull them out and re-read them [she didn't know about me reading them before but I wrote it down].. Although they were not identical runes they pretty much gave the same message...
(gee now I sound like I am trying to promote myself)..
Anyhow I think it is great to make your own runes. I feel more connected to them and I think it is the best thing I could have done to help me evole psychically, spiritually and wholely....
Good luck

Thanks for sharing your great story with us Annyka :) It goes to show that making up your own runes or oracles, works just as good as tradional methods like the eldar futhark runes :)

Another great thing to use to make your own runes is a branch of a tree. Find one in the diameter of the size you want & cut the branch into 1/4 inch discs. You can draw or carve the symbols into the wood. I made a set out of hazel that I really love using. Runes can be carved or drawn on just about anything. What ever that has the most meaning for you. I picked hazel because to me, hazel represent wisdom & knowledge. I have a few other sets that I've made. For rune charms & amulets, I love using sculpry. You can shape them into anything & carve the runes on them with no problem.
