We turn off everything we don't need. Only in the rooms we are, the lights will burn, and only when it's too dark to see. When we're out, we switch a two-wire switch, cancelling the stand-by mode of many pieces of equipment and turning them off altogether. We unplug the microwave and the washing machine. The only thing 'on' all the time, is the fridge. I'd do more if I could. I don't need Earth Hour. I have Earth Life.

Interesting concept, but in my eye it will cause more pollution turning them back on after the hour is over due to the demand of electricity. It seems to me a bit pointless.

We will be participating. It's not just about the impact it will have (which probably won't be that much)...it's about the statement it makes and the awareness it will hopefully bring people. Many people don't even think about what they consume (electricity or otherwise).

Unfortunately I hadn't heard about this until about 10 minutes ago, and unfortunately I'll be cooking at around 8pm so I can't turn a whole lot off.

We're doing it. Of course, by that time most of us are in bed, so it won't be too hard, lol. Ugh, morning people...

I know it doesn't count, but I'm doing it right now. I have my reasons.

just turned my computer back on after Earth Hour in the Central US Timezone. It's too chilly to turn off the furnace, but we did have a nice time hanging out in the dark.

I really don't think this was announced enough in advance, nor widely enough, for it to be appreciated and participated in by all who would have wanted to. I've been telling people about it for days, and everyone I told, it was their first time hearing about it.
I was all alone at home (except for my wonderful dog, Sable) during Earth Hour. At 7:45, I gathered up a few candles and placed them all around the house. At 7:55, I started turning off lights and lighting candles.
From 8 to 9, I lay in my bed beside my dog. I enjoyed the quiet and the wonderful atmosphere created by the soothing candle light. It was a great time to just meditate and be at peace. At 9, I started blowing out candles and turning on a few lights.
I thought my daughter would be home from her boyfriend's house around 8, but they didn't get back until after 9.
I think I'll start having my own Earth Hour once a week!

I generally keep all the lights off anyway. My monitor is my only light usually.
I'll be doing this. We're gonna play Monopoly by candle light.
I love playing games by candlelight! Especially Magic (the card game)

Well I didn't even hear about this until I went to google something and it came up with a black screen. By then it was well past 9. Oh well. Interesting idea though. We are pretty good about not leaving on things we don't need too anyway though.

Vivi got to stay up and snuggle with us in bed... we ended up singing a lot and talking about taking care of the earth.. it was pretty nice.

I didn't hear about it in time. I think a little advanced warning would have been good. Mayeb my daughter & I will substitute tomorrow instead. Light a couple of candles & read books on the chesterfield and pretend its the summertime & we are doing the same thing out at the lake or something.
I think they really could have used some advertising. Maybe next year will be better.
I agree with whoever said that it is less about the act of doing it (& expecting some maginificent result that nullifies all the years of damage caused to the environment thus far) and more about becoming aware of how much power you really are using (wastefully, but not needing it (eg, the bathroom light when you are not at home, or the radio, furnace, a/c, etc when you could easily put on a sweater or a tank top & eat an ice cube smoothie or something to cool off instead of letting the ice cubes linger and linger in the fridge until you have dry ice ... lol), by having to shut it all off for a brief time.
I think the point of it is to think about what you are doing when you flip on the tv, or not shut off the computer overnight when you know you aren't going to use it for a long while, etc. Global consciousness and all that.

My neighbourhood did this.
So, I went out and emptied a few barrels of oil into a pond to balance everything out.

I've just realised that Earth Hour was held on the 29th and not the 30th like I thought. I'll definitely be participating next year.

ETA: We did leave the fridge and heater on though.

Well I agree the Tv piece I saw was about how Earth Hour got started and how the elementary school students here were making the adults aware of Earth hour but ya I do not think it was enough time and promotion was given to this event. I hope it is better promoted next year.
As for what I did I sat with my son and talked to him about the environment the sun was setting so it was nice and then when he went to bed I did some meditation. and Then I lit some candles once the sun was gone and as a result my girls decided that they had to come down and see what I was doing :D So for me it was a nice hour :)
. It's not just about the impact it will have (which probably won't be that much)...it's about the statement it makes and the awareness it will hopefully bring people. Many people don't even think about what they consume (electricity or otherwise).I agree. Back in 2006 we had such horrible storms that would have us with out power for up to 8 hours or more... I tell you I sure learned to appreciate what we consume. It also reminded me how much we have become dependant on electricity and other forms of power to.

lots of time was given here, and facebook did it's thing to spread the word, I would have liked to have seen it on the news more.
However most here knew a month in advance. Some just didn't turn thier lights out, some turned the power off to their house completely. I always wonder why I do that more often or at least turn all the un needed breakers off when I go away for the weekend.

I hadn't heard about it 'till just now, however I did accidentally participate. We left town for two weeks and I unplugged everything but the fridge and fish tank when we left. So I guess it was earth two weeks at my house. :smileroll
