WAYCROSS, Ga. - A group of third-graders plotted to attack their teacher, bringing a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape and other items for the job and assigning children tasks including covering the windows and cleaning up afterward, police said Tuesday.

I always said kids were cruel. But this! They're like a bunch of little gremlins man! My kid would be grounded for a whole year if she even dared to try anything like that!

I saw that earlier..how awful. The worst part is the plan wasn't so far fetched as to be obviously unworkable. They actually plotted out a possible murder. Those kids need therapy. For a very very very long time.

Actually though, considering that are special needs kids, this bespeaks a great job by the teacher that these kids were able to get together and work as a team, and even assign tasks. Pretty impressive.

I wasn't thinking of ADD and ADHD as special needs...not in the way I typically think of a special needs child...but still:jawdrop: I find it shocking that group of 3rd graders would get together to do something like that.
Let alone that that many 3rd graders could actually agree on something.

Either way, I think the youngin's need some help.

I think those kids need help..as in a good kick in the ass.

Sorry, but true :p.

Perhaps a long time away from the tv as well, where I'm assuming they probably got such a lovely idea. Oh, and a bit of counseling may be a good idea too, assuming some of them aren't already getting it.

You know what Lunar, I completely agree with you. I saw this early this morn. as I was getting ready for work. I'm not a big believer in hitting children at all, especially with my childhood background but I would have kicked my kids ass and on top of that - no more video games, no more t.v., Gods help you if you even THINK about asking to go anywhere and serious sessions with a child psychiatrist. When I feel you've got yourself together, I might let you have some t.v.

Yeah, I'd be further disturbed if these kids were more or less let off the hook. I don't like it when age, no matter how young, allows you a get-out-of-jail-free card. (Yes, I know how touchy that remark is, but I mean it more on a case-by-case basis rather than a generality.) As far as their mental state goes, it also isn't a proper excuse. However, in these terms, perhaps therapy should then be thrown on top of any standard punishments.

Even if they're let go on suspected murder charges or whatever, I stand by them being suspended and/or expelled. I mean, if kids are being suspended for bringing in nail clippers, I'd hope more than that would be done to kids that brought in actual weapons with the intent on using them. That "zero tolerance" rule should actually be good for something...

Edit: And no, I don't literally believe the kids should be taken to jail.

WAHT WHAT WAHT! Blasphemy!! How dare you blame media! Don't you know that media has no power whatsoever to influence anyone's actions on any level, especially children?! Any attempt to hold media responsible for anything at all is CEN-SOR-SHIP!

Media affects peoples' actions... preposterous! I need to buy a six pack of Pepsi(tm) and a pack of Marlboro(tm) cigarettes to calm my nerves from such a ridiculous statement!

Two news channels last night, said two of the kids were arrested:eyebrow:
I really didn't know you could arrest someone of that age.

If it scares them straight then I'm all for it. If it was just one kid smacking another kid on the playground then no, of course not; but these kids planned to hurt this teacher and it was very clear by the 'supplies' they brought with them. Clearly they have problems that need to be addressed.

Unless I miss read that, it sounds like nothing more than school disciplinary actions will be taken....as they are saying that children of that age are incapable of such actions:eyebrow:

Unlikely that they'd be able to pull it off I can believe, but the fact remains they planned it. That's what I find unsettling.

Okay I just got a visual of these 3 little kids trying to take down a teacher and the teacher bitchslapping them. I like that. :rotfl:

Sadly I can remember reading news articles about children between the ages of 8 and 12 killing others. It's not common of course, but it's not true that they are "incapable."

In fact, in browsing for information, I found one account of a six year old bringing a gun to school and shooting a classmate, shouting "I don't like you!"

I think perhaps children under the age of 10 may not understand that their actions could cause the death of another person, but they certainly can be angry enough to intentionally hurt another person, even to make a plan to hurt another person, probably in order to get even for something.

That's the truth - it reminds me of when I was in 5th grade. There was a boy that used to tease me alot (I was actually pretty quiet and subdued when I was little - prime target for bullies... for awhile anyway). I'd told my mother about it and she told me to ignore him, which I did. Well, he was going to get my attention no matter what and did a hop, jump, karate kick thing and he kicked me so hard in the stomach that I blacked out, fell off my chair and threw up in the classroom when I came to. I was out of school for 2 days and he got suspended. After a trip to the doctor to check for damage, I was all banged up inside and there was a big bruise on my stomach. Little kids are capable of alot of harm for sure. Sadly, he wound up being a career criminal and is now in prison for killing someone in our area.

I remember being in thrid grade and having very violent thoughts and desires. If I had felt that I could have gotten away with it, I probably would have harmed a lot of people. Teachers and my parents included.
