View Full Version : Question about candle dressing and results

OK, my questions here get stupider and stupider as I go along. I am sorry for that.
Here goes this doozy:
My birthday was in June, and I did a candle spell for the upcoming year. I dressed a white candle with lavender oil. The candle was inscribed with symbols for luck, love, prosperity, etc. I charged crystals for the same properties and placed them in a ring around the candle. Then I burned the candle. Here's the problem. When I dressed the candle, I rubbed the oil from the ends to the middle. It wasn't until later that I realized everything i have read says to dress a candle from the middle to the ends. At first I felt that my intent, to draw good things to me, should be stronger than the way I dress the candle. However, my life has gotten screwier and more things are going wrong since then.
Do you think this is just coincidence or did I royally screw up? If I did is there a way to make it better?

Since following the Wiccan path I have been training myself not to believe in the word 'coincidence'. I'm sure some christian came up with the word to explain magic! You were aware that you had made an error, even if it was a small one it still has placed some negative energy in the back of your mind. I would be tempted to do the spell again. Perhaps with a different colour candle and different oils. Frankincense is a good all-rounder! Hope this is of help!
Blessed be!

Actually I have read that you are to put yourself in the middle of the candle. If you are doing a spell to draw magick to you, you would rub from ends to middle. Sending magick away..middle to end. So you did it right. However, I agree with Mex. You perceived an error and the magick worked that way. Maybe you could repeat the spell. Think of it as an extention, to reinforse, rather than a whole new spell. Maybe since it was a birthday spell and astrologically nothing is the same as it was on your birthday maybe if you have an object like a birthday card or something left from it you could place it on the Altar? Just a thought. :)

Chryssi....that's exactly how I wouldve dressed the candle had I been doing it.
You are in the middle of the candle and you want to bring good things to you so from the ends toward the middle should do the trick, to repel negativty from the middle to the outside; but maybe since you precieve that it's wrong that could be causing all the foul ups. I'd suggest that before you go through the whole thing again to be sure and set in your mind how the candle should be dressed. Then follow up with what feels best for you, then DON'T think about it again. Whatever feels comfortable for you is the way it should be done. Love ya! (Brightest Blessings to You!)

...this is why I use votive candles in my workings... you just rub a little oil on the top, & VOILA! No muss, no fuss...
..except I carve in Runes, & don't rub on oils...

Heehee Rick ;)
Yeah I don't even worry about dressing so much. I more annoint. I just smear a little oil any old place.
Chryssi your question isn't stupid ;)
But I would like to say in response to Mex that I never ever redo a spell. I would do a counter spell or end the old by burying the remains. After you do that, then it might be safe to try again but I think it's more important to stop the first if you truly believe you made a mistake.

That is the beauty of Wicca, that there is no right or wrong way! Whatever feels right to the individual! More power to you all!
Blessed be!

That's especially true for me since I'm not Wiccan ;) But yes, you are right, that is the beauty of magic, it is very personal :) I'm just giving Chryssi things to think about, offering alternatives.

See, this is what I get for reading Buckland! He's the one who made me think I was making a mistake. ;)
(gotta blame someone, eh?)
Anyway.... I think I am trying to grasp some reason why my life is really nutty. It was nutty before I did the spell, just quite a bit more nutty now.
Maybe I'll just burn some black and white candles for absorbing negativity and protection and leave it at that.
Thanks for the suggestions.
