I don't know much about card readings and have only had very few done. My mother-in-law goes frequently for a reading. I remember at one time she carried her own deck of cards, explaining to me that the cards would pick up her vibrations and hence she would get a better reading. How do ya'll feel about this? (For all I know her reader may have suggested this to her.)If someone came to you for a reading and ask that you use cards they had and they had been carrying them for the purpose stated above....would you use them? (Before answering remember that Mama-in-Law did not read for herself or anyone elese, just carried the cards so her energies would be absorbed into those cards.)

I would try, especially if I had a similar deck or seen that one before. If she goes to a reader regularly that reader probably told her which one to get.

I often encourage friends of mine to buy their own deck if they want me to read for them and yes, I give them a list of the ones I'm comfortable with. The reason was that I don't want them touching my cards, but they seem to really need to hold them. That freaks me out :D

:dis: Personally, I'm kinda iffy on certain decks - some of them I can't understand or get anything out of them at all. But I would certainly give it a shot first. :)

Good idea, really. Most of the folks I read for don't profess to doing any divination themselves....hmm.
If I'm reading for someone at an organized event or at home (and I've planned for this...lol) I'll usually offer them several decks to choose from as the reading won't be worth as much to them if they can't invest in the process. Feeling comfortable with the cards is important not just for the reader but for the client as well.

:) Yes this is a great idea, thanks for bringing it up. I too would give the reading a damn good shot, and belive its ahealthy thing to do.. but Id be too tempted to try and read from them and leanr myself.. I wonder why she never did?

She told me at one time she did try to learn to read. She said she never really picked up on it; said she never got a feel for it.
Acutally she has given those cards to me....about 3 months ago.
They are in the bottom of my chest. I took them out and took a look at them, spread the out on the bed; it was the first time I'd seen a deck. I didn't know quite what to make of them. I know if I decide to try I'll have alot of serious studying to do on them and at this point I don't have that much extra time to devot to it. Is there a deck that may be recommened for beginners?

Just my own opine...and it's worth what it costs....concentrate on getting a good 'across the board' education about the generalized, recognized meanings. You can USUALLY do that with any deck (so long as you feel comfortable with the symbols, pictures, vibes, etc) and a couple of good 'about tarot' books. The books which helped me the most were Eden Grey's books and Jana Riley's book on tarot. Since I started reading tarot with the Dragon deck and followed it up with Tarot of the Orisha, I'm not the one to recommend a starter deck...lol....however, if I were doing the whole scene over I'd want to know about the Spiral Tarot.............honestly, what deck you use is really about what feels OK when you're looking at it and working with it. The most important thing I did was make myself do at least 90 minutes to 2 hours worth of work every other night on researching meanings, readings, and writing down all the syncretizations and correlations in a tarot journal. This was helpful to me not only in defining the cards but also defining what they meant to me....as well as helping me understand they could be a great assist toward mediation.
Happy majors, minors, court cards, and so forth....:D

I agree with rootwork :)
& Witchy, try to go through all the major and minro card discussions here and look about for other reading stuff, but dont worry about having to leanr all the meanings, look through your cards again and see what they say to you, you are the one who can 'see' whats in your cards much better than any book or other persons opinion :)

I was just seaching through our old threads and found this.
I had forgotten about it!
What a long way I've come.
I even know now that the few readings I'd had done, as mentioned in the first post were done with playing cards which explains the later post that says I'd never seen a tarot deck before.:D
