CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A gust of wind blew a 2-year-old in a stroller into Lake Michigan, where the boy remained submerged for at least 15 minutes before being pulled out unconscious but alive.

The child's grandfather, who had been pushing the stroller on the lakeside Friday afternoon, jumped into the harbor to try to save the boy, the Chicago Fire Department said.

Witnesses said the frantic grandfather struggled in the frigid water, just off a 70-foot long pier, pointing a few feet away and shouting in broken English, "Child! Child!"

"He was just moaning in the breakwater, crying," said John Derscheid, who called 911.

Winds at the time were about 20 mph with gusts of about 30 mph, a meteorologist said.

The boy was in critical condition at Children's Memorial Hospital, authorities said Friday night. A hospital spokeswoman declined to comment Saturday.

The grandfather, who appeared to be in his 60s, was stable Saturday night at St. Joseph Hospital, where he was being treated for exposure.

The toddler was strapped in the three-wheeled jogging stroller about 10 feet below the surface of the 42-degree water before rescue divers pulled him out.

Derscheid said the scene "is going to stick with me for the rest of my life."

Frigid water is good for preserving drowned people.

Is it? I've never heard of anything like that before. I'm shocked the toddler survived.

Cold temperatures slows down the metabolic rate, putting the body into slow motion. As a result, the time it takes to damage the brain and other organs slows down: off the top of my head, I think the record is 40 minutes.

Wow...40 minutes? Thanks for sharing! :)

It's sad when things like this happen. They didn't comment on the status of the child, but I doubt he'd be doing terribly well after being under water for fifteen minutes.

Alll I've read is that the toddler is in critical condition.

I think it would be more apporiate to thank the icy water, I doubt any supernatural power had any influence - else it would have been easier to prevent the child from drowning in the first place, that would be closer to "protection".

Exactly, I can't tell how badly he was hurt by such an ordeal so I can't really judge whether or not he truly has survived it or not.

I wonder if the child will have resulting brain damage for the rest of its life from lack of oxygen.

That's what I wonder, as well. What I hate about these news stories is that they never have follow-up stories so you never really know how it ended up.

Probably not, the child's metabolic rate would have been slow that brain damage is unlikely.

Maybe not brain damage but I wonder what else happened to him as a result of being submerged in frigid water for so long.

Just a little update - but it sounds like things are looking up!

The parents and a family friend have commented that they are optimistic and that the little boy's condition has improved.
