Brazil priest carried off by balloons
A Roman Catholic priest who floated off under hundreds of helium party balloons is missing off the southern coast of Brazil.
Rescuers in helicopters and small fishing boats were searching off the coast of Santa Catarina state, where pieces of balloons were found.
Reverend Adelir Antonio de Carli lifted off from the port city of Paranagua on Sunday afternoon, wearing a helmet, thermal suit and a parachute.
He was reported missing about eight hours later after losing contact with port authority officials, according to the treasurer of his Sao Cristovao parish, Denise Gallas.

There doesn't have to be rhyme or reason.
They tried this out on myth busters but once they figured that, yes, he could get off the ground and potentially fly away, he shot down the balloons one by one and came back down to safety...

Ya know, I just keep thinking, there is no friggin way I'd volunteer to climb into a chair and be floated off like some Wiley Coyote/ACME cartoon experiment. No.no.no. It never ended well for Wiley, who am I to assume gravity is gonna be friendlier to me?

He was trying to raise funds to provide a rest stop for lorry drivers in Paranagua, a major port for agricultural products.
He was trying to do a good thing by raising money, and I hope that he is found safe.

This reminds me of a joke told by Billy Connelly on the Raw meat for the balcony vinyl from the 70's which goes thus:
This man was out walking one day near the sea doing what people out for walking do. He was walking along the cliffs and ended up finding the next step had no ground. It was now the "Oh dear, I and going to be falling over the cliff" type of thought. So he falls over and as luck would have it as he was grasping for air that did nothing he caught hold of a small tree.
So hanging there he cries out for help.
"Yes" said a calm voice "I am here"
"What? Who's that?"
"I am God" was the reply "I see all things, I know all things."
"Ahh okay" said the man clinging to the small tree "Can you give me a hand here. I seemed to have fallen off the cliff".
"Aye. I know" God replied calmly.
"Look I don't think you understand" shouted the now desperate man "I am holding on here for dear life"
"Yes you are" replied God And you will hold on until your arms get sore until you can no longer stand the pain, you will let go, fall to the rocks below and you will join me in heaven".
The man hung there for a while. Finally he shouts "Is there anyone else up there?"

Well, not update, exactly, but more information:
From the news yesterday: "What we're hearing now is that he did not know how to use his equipment, the GPS, and he was ill-prepared for his flight," she told CBC News on Wednesday.
She said that while di Carli had intended to drift inland, weather conditions forced him over the ocean. She said authorities have also found the chair he was travelling in.
Meanwhile, a flight instructor who expelled di Carli from flight school three years ago has publicly criticized the priest for his stunt, Gancia said.
"He called him undisciplined and an exhibitionist, and he was always bragging about his faith and how his faith was going to carry him and take him safely through his journey. And that's not what happened." The news yesterday (http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/04/23/balloon-journey.html?ref=rss)
Sometimes you have to wonder, don't you.

we never know, he could have vanished in mid flight and found himself in heaven.
then again, for those who believe humans and animals are equal, he atleast made a tastey meal for the hungry sharks!:rotfl:

I read about this and before now I didn't think it could really work. He could be floating some where over ocean for all we know.
