In Ritual Practice :

Evocation = The Art of Calling Forth , from the interior
of oneself...

Invocation = The Art of Calling Into , from outside , to
the interior of oneself...

Usually refering to a Spirit , God / Goddess , Angel , Demon , etc...

Basically, "evoke" refers to something emotional or mental, ie: "This movie evokes a great deal of emotion in the audience." Invoke refers to calling upon something, especially a deity or spirit. "He invoked the spirit of Jesus during the Mass."

I can see why someone would be confused, though, what with the Etymology of the words being so similar.

EVOKE

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/evoke

Etymology

From Latin evocare, "to call out", "to summon", from ex-, "out" and vocare, "to call" (confer English "voice"), via French évoquer.

Verb

1. To cause the manifestation of something (emotion, picture, etc.) in someone's mind or imagination.

INVOKE

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/invoke

Etymology

Latin invocare (“‘to call upon’”)

Verb

1. (transitive) To call upon (a person, especially a god) for help, assistance or guidance.
2. (transitive) To conjure up with incantations.
3. (transitive) (computing) To cause (a program or subroutine) to execute.

Um. I'm pretty much in agreement with the standard dictionary definitions--

Evoke:
to call up or produce (memories, feelings, etc.)
to call up; cause to appear; summon.

Invoke:
to call on (a deity, Muse, etc.), as in prayer or supplication.
to petition or call on for help or aid.
to call forth or upon (a spirit) by incantation.
to cause, call forth, or bring about.

There are also related to the words invocation and evocation.

In certain ritual / retual , we evoke an entity , from our
subconscious , into a triangle , while standing in our
circle...

To make it even clearer...

Thanks for all the comments. :)

Your definitions hit it head on, I know a lot of people who muddle them up and completely don't know what evoke means.
