View Full Version : Discrimination At Work--

PandoraHealer

Yes, another discrimination thread....

If I have to hear the phrase "as a good christian woman...." again--- I'm going to puke...

The woman is a PD... Preachers Daughter.... (joy)...
When I first started working there a few months ago, there was another pagan there, we sat together and talked PRIVATELY, she has since quit-- and has left me as the only pagan there....
The woman is constantly saying things like " I have good christian values, and blah blah blah, anyone that doesn't have these good values will not see the lord in heaven... " *barf*
2 days ago, I set a job down on a desk to send the pictures to printing, the plastic hook flipped down and slapped the desk, she freaked out and yelled at me, "Why do you have to do that? Its so annoying, god whats your deal, you do that all the time..."
er.... scared the life out of me when she started yelling- i jumped out of my skin. I asked her if she was PMSing or what.... then walked off to use a different computer...
Yesterday, she walked up to me at the beginning of the shift and said "I'm sorry I snipped at you but youre just annoying" .... thats not an apology.... thats more rude-ness....

She also is discriminating against another person for thier sexual orientation.... which is going over well.... lol...

This person won't be coming back to work next season... however, there is still 4-5 weeks left of this season....

I attempted to talk to my Lead the day she yelled at me-- but we were so busy with messed up jobs, errors, and other complications, she didnt get to talk to me. Our lead wasn't at work yesterday---

By this time, the gossip just FLYS through that place.... so by lunch time, i was afraid to get out of my chair-- because when I do-- little comments are made by her little friends...
Its not a comfortable work environment-- and its not condusive to productive work...
I ended up talking to the floor supervisor.... didn't get me very far... he just said "ok, i've had other reports that are similar, and some that are opposite, so i have to pass it on to the big boss" ---- acomplished a LOT don't yha know...

I don't walk around saying "as a good pagan woman, I pick up my trash, and walk on ozone alert days.... or anything like that" --- its just stupid...

anyway....

so... how do you handle discrimination at work?

People are always going to talk no matter what.

Your Boss has the responsibility to provide an environment free of the kinds of comments this girl is spewing out.

Religious intolerance, discrimination is discrimination, it is on the equal rights poster in the break room (should be)

if your boss will not protect you from this than you have the right to file a complaint. Especially if she is rallying her co-workers, that is what is known as "creating a hostile work environment"

I never "handled" it...

People on this site know a little about me by now...

I am not the type to put up with that shit...

So let me see...what have I done...?

1. Keyed someone's car

2. Dog poo scooped , and placed right by their car door

3. Dead rat under desk , or where they could not find it ,
easily...or some other animal , that was rotting...

4. Punctured tires

5. Ex - Lax Brownies for a gift

6. Asked them out for lunch , to "make - up" ,
and become friends...expensive restaurant , then ,
after eating , went to bathroom , and left , leaving
them to pay the bill...that is a good one !

7. Spider in their lunch bag

8. Told them I was not a son of a witch , but I could
be a son of a bitch , if they did not change their attitude...

And if they thought a woman on her period was bad...

To just go ahead , and keep pissing me off , and see
what happened...

9. Told my boss I was related to Mafia , and would really
appreciate them dealing with the situation , before I , or
my relatives had to...

Those are a few , of many more...

I'm not sure what to do other than what you are doing.

Unless you want to risk making waves:

You could tell her that real christians don't spew the kind of hatred she does. (I'd probably say something along those lines).

You could (if you don't already) openly wear symbols of your own faith.

Remind her that Jesus wasn't a Christian, he was Jewish.

Some people here have made lists of contradictory bible quotes or simply quotes that contradict some of the more common preudicial messages that some people who call themselves Christian like to prattle on about (I have respect for Christianity, but I don't think all people who claim to be Christian have the right to make that claim, as much as they contradict Christ's messages).

Or, you could take a more sarcastic approach (I wouldn't go this far unless I knew the person had a sense of humor, though admittedly the temptation is there, so this section is just for laughs so you can imagine the look on her face....):

Take the Bible quotes thing to the next level, for example the link in this thread:
http://mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=187882

Start going on about why would anyone want to share heaven with her horrible version of God.

Say, "well, at least the Devil isn't guilty of discrimination."

Next time she goes on about her Chistian values, you can reply that fancy words aren't reality. Or mutter something about people and their delusions, not living in reality, having a good fantasy life, whatever.

Leave a voodoo doll on her desk anonymously.

Mutter nonsense words under your breath in a dark tone of voice whenever she wanders by.

Mutter something about cleaning up the goat's blood.

If you can track it down at a library or online, there are some rather interesting early Christian texts that talk about getting to know the crucified Christ in a rather....intimate way, one that was quoted in one of my classes said about Christ something along the lines of "...and he opened his mouth to my kisses, that I might understand him more deeply..."

Tell her that Jesus hung out with harlots and thieves, so he certainly wouldn't like her.

Print out bible quotes in many notes to all of your coworkers. Sign them with her name. Distribute them when no one is looking.

I'm sure other people can come up with more...

You can always put up humorous pictures with a pagan theme:

http://www.bewitchingways.com/humor/flying.htm

http://www.trialsofgrizelda.com/index2.htm

Start talking about everything Christianity took (or might have taken) from earlier faiths.

Ask her why Christians wear crosses and say that Jesus is probably going to run away and hide out with the pagans when he sees all the people who claim to be his followers wearing the instrument of his torture and death around their necks....
(Hey, I'd be a little worried if I saw people wearing images of me hanging dead from a cross...).

Or you could just confront her and remind her that her behavior has legal ramifications and that you will not hesitate to pursue those ramifications if she does not curb her behavior. At the very least, she is creating a hostile work environment. Keep making complaints, but submit them in writing. At least it's a paper trail of every single time you feel discriminated against. Document every single thing she does or says and submit a weekly report. Let your supervisors know that your weekly reports will stop as soon as they do something about her behavior. As my mother always says, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Yes, submit a paper trail of documented occurances...to HR. Supervisors often play nice to get the "team" to work together. They don't want to have to deal with stuff, so they just don't attend to many things, but HR knows that if a person knows enough and cares enough to come to them, they had better address the situation before lawyers get involved.

I wish I'd followed my own advice at my last job...but I was trying to be a team player, and boy did I ever get screwed.

HR, HR, HR...

It would be even cooler to mutter a phrase in Latin - maybe the bible verse where Jesus says "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear."

Then sit back and wait for her to complain because you're casting curses on her.

Here's the Latin version: ”Timor non est in caritate, sed perfecta caritas foras mittit timorem “

Speaking of discrimination at work, I feel the whole idea of vocational rehab somehow more discriminating than working a regular job toward the disabled. Especially the mildly disabled. I took time off today to go sign up at college (for financial aid and change my major) but it left me depressed all day. And I'm planning to take tomorrow off and go back Monday. (hence staying up this late, which I haven't done for a while) And at 24 I feel like I've accomplished nothing and I'm stressed about the money/school/independence issues. I know it would be hard to live on my own and going to school (and possibly working) at the same time but lots of people do it.

I feel like this is the most depressed I've been. No I haven't been diagnosed with depression but I'm obviously a depressed person :(

Remember, the burden of proof is going to be on you. I found a page that tells you everything you will need to know if you are going to be successful in your harassment complaint. http://www.wwpn.org/Pages/employment.htm

I would not recommend the dog poo and keying tactics, that makes you guilty of harassment as well as vandalism and is going to cost you any standing you would have in this.

This lady's name isn't annita is it?(Lol dont feel obligated to answer if you cant say) I know someone that lives in Tulsa that had this girl that was a proud christian, but her actions did not show it. Since then the girl moved on to another job. I really hate it when christians do that whole bs that you were talking about. I wanted to puke too. Bleh!!!! That is one of the things that turned me against christianity.

I was leaving a job and preparing to hand it over to the new appointee. We were introduced to each other by the head of the section and after he left her first words were; “I’m a born again Christian!”

I let a pause develop and then responded; “And now you’re the new parole clerk, which is what we are here to discuss, not matters that have no bearing on the work you will be doing!”

She was somewhat frosty after that but she never mentioned religion again for the rest of the week. I would not have minded having a discussion about faith but in the coffee room on a suitable break.

I often wondered how she dealt, as a born again Christian, with all those rapists, murderers and child molesters in the prison after I left?

The only genuine ‘Christians’ I’ve met always seem to be the ones who do not feel the need to trumpet their faith for the whole world to hear, they just live it.

Well-- this was definatly funny to come home to....

Today, I hadn't been in my seat but maybe 20 minutes, my boss took me in a seperate room for an HOUR and talked to me about this incident, and others--- asked about other things going on on the production floor... blah blah blah blah...

Went back to my seat... and on first break me and 3 others sat in my car while I quickly filled them in-- then went back to work--

We all clocked out for lunch and I went out (yay) and when we came back, i was walking around the corner to go back to work, and she passed me with her bag and things--

about 20 minutes later, someone brought her badge in-- she never clocked back in after lunch--

SHE QUIT!!!!!!

If thats not an admittance to guilt-- i don't know what is!!!

however, The first person they came looking for was ME-- I made VERY clear that I had NOTHING to do with her walking out--- I imagine i'm in for another meeting tomarrow... this is the 3rd person in a few weeks that has walked out and left this job....

We are used to having a shift of 25-30 people--- we are now down to 7 plus a temporary lead...
Our lead has been out "sick" (AKA- suspended b/c of the last 2 people quitting and not getting straight answers about that)--- makes me mad...

I'm hoping our lead comes back SOON! and I'm kind of glad the girl is gone... its good b/c of the discrimination issue but now they want to know what I did to her... great...

Lenfantdefleur: No, her name isn't annita.... I do know an annita--- want to PM me her last name and I can tell you if its the same one I know....

~Elise~ : Oh how I wish that would work--- however-- the jobs we do get sent in from other states-- none from here in oklahoma-- some security thing-- we can't be looking at people's kids that we might know... and we don't ever actually see or meet the customers--- the photographers take the pictures, and mail in the whole mess of name cards and a DVD of the pictures--- we look through all the images and pick the best ones, crop them down-- photoshop camera dirt out, things like that-- then we send them across the street to the printing building and they print the pics and pack them up and ship them back to the school.

Well--
Thanks for the tips guys!!

Hmm, interesting... they must have called her in to ask her about her version of the incident. Possibly she played all innocent and they weren't buying it - so she quit before they could fire her. After all, she couldn't possibly continue to work in an environment where she wasn't allowed to be snarky to the people who didn't meet her own set of standards, eh? /sarcasm

As we used to say as kids - good riddance to bad rubbish. Hope they can finally get some decent people to fill the ranks, especially some good people to be supervisors or managers or team leaders or whatever it's called in that job. :uhhuhuh:

And this is why , by the time I was 30 , I owned my own
business , and either I , or my mate at the time ( few businesses )
continued to do so , until I quit working in my early forties...

( First business , I was the "amber essence" creator )

I am outspoken , and have NO problem with self esteem , and
shall not allow bullies of whatever form , to exist in my space...

I do not care who they are , or where...terminate with extreme
prejudice...because if they dare do it with me...they would pick
on others , less able than me...and I , being an alpha wolf spirit ,
will not put up with that...leader of a pack , I go for the throat...

Let all hell break loose...funny...nothing ever happened to me ,

Can I just ask?? Does she know your Pagan?

Because to be honest... what youre going through here isn't discrimination... it's harassment for sure, but not discrimination... and to label it that way would be wrong.

As a gay individual I've felt discrimination... but the majority of time I feel harassment. The difference is that to discriminate you haver to have power over someone... what she is doing is not discrimination because she is not taking things away from you or forcing you to do things... by the sounds of it she's just being innapropriate. Labelling it discrimination, especially when you go to your boss won't help you.

The only thing you can do is either go to the boss directly, and file a complaint... or go to the woman, outline what your concerns are and ask her to stop. The piece to this is however that you have to remain logical and respectful... because to go in with all guns flying will not help her understand what your feeling, or help your boss in understanding either.

the only time I have ever had to deal with discrimination based on my faith in the work place It was actually my bos (who was the biggest boss in the company) who was discriminating against me! Talk about having no where to turn!

Yes, she does know I am Pagan. Another girl worked there for 3 years and was pagan-- she is who trained me. She was also Pagan, and she and I would talk between ourselves--- the "church girl" would listen in and put her 2 cents in occasionally....
The other Pagan girl has since quit because of this type of thing, which has left me out in the open all by myself-- which is fine-- I usually don't even bring up faith at work-- but it was so hard to ignore another co-worker wearing a pentacle-- especially when I am looking for Pagan friends here. Anyway--
I agree that it is perhaps not discrimination per-say--- it is definatly harrassment- which is the word I used when talking to my boss.
There have been times when she downright refuses to ask for my help to fix a problem with a job-- that she can't. Once she did this, asked 3 people they all messed with it for a while, then our lead said "hey beth, you know how to fix this-- can you come up here".... I was like.. yha now you want my help. *rolls eyes*.... she wasted over an hours time all because she wouldn't let me fix the problem--- was that faith related? I don't have a clue-- but it was rude....

The big boss didn't get to talk to her yesterday-- he left after he talked to me--- we don't know why she left-- she knew I was talking to the boss and she knew there were 3 other people lined up behind me to talk to him as well....

Who knows-- but I know i'm in for it today... I'm so not ready for work... ugh

Soooo---- went in to work today.... then got pulled aside into the office to have another 'chat'---- they said that me being on the floor was intimidating people.

When we worked saturday, I heard 2 people, one being the temporary lead, telling someone else that they needed to watch what they said around me because I might put a curse on them or something.....

Myself and one other person brought that comment to the attention of our supervisor and then today I was fired....

hmm.....

So apparently being Pagan is intimidating....

what really pisses me off is that nobody knew I was Pagan except for the nosy girl that quit-- which is what started all this...

Myself and one other person brought that comment to the attention of our supervisor and then today I was fired....

hmm.....

So apparently being Pagan is intimidating....

what really pisses me off is that nobody knew I was Pagan except for the nosy girl that quit-- which is what started all this...

so--- I am enjoying my new found freedom for the rest of the nite and will be finding a lawyer and a new job tomarrow.....

retarted crap...

ph

We are an "at will" state...they can fire you for any reason or no reason. I know that doesn't help, but you should know that...

I dropped of someone at work today, went home and barely made it in the door before my phone rang "come get me-- I'm fired too" --- HOLY CRAP!!!

Went and picked him up--- similar things said-- He was 'spying' on people amongst other false accusations....

We called our lead (keep in mind she has not been to work since Tues LAST week)-- She was fired today as well... for "allowing too much cursing on the floor, religious persecution (not true at ALL!!), and telling people to "shut up" for 3 hours so she could take a test for school..... (also not true) "....

She is furious as well--- so now there's 4 of us--- all contacting lawyers--and writing letters to the corprate office about the incident...

AAAARRRRUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!

In a way I feel better b/c now i'm not the only one, which provides more evidence/witnesses/back up for me... but its a major bummer that everyone lost thier jobs (which we loved!), thier income (needed), and now we're all PO'ed and trying to figure out what to do...

BLAH!!

Just thought i'd update-- this could become a very interesting thread (not that it isnt already) -- I will post updates after I speak with the lawyer tomarrow...

*greatly irritated-- getting wine and going to have a bubble bath*

OH YES!! I filled out the questionaire to request help. I posted on a huge local yahoo group for pagans, asked for a Pagan friendly lawyer-- got a name and # right off the bat-- Shes about 3 hours away but I understand she does cases like this all over-- going to call her tomarrow.
I was also referred to a book titled, "Pagans and The Law" by Dana D Eilers-- going to post some Q's about it in the book forum in a minute.

That site you gave me was a big help-- they said they would contact me within 2 weeks--- so i'm anxiously awaiting that.

Thanks so much for the help!!!

You poor things I hope verything turns out okay for the both of you. This is not nearly as serious as what happened you and I'm not trying to play if otff like it is. But as an example of how stupid people can be. I was at Starbucks the other day and this guy sit down next to me and started reading from the Bible. Eventually it came out that I was pagan. He litterally jumps backward and in a serious tone goes "Please I'm begging you stop killing christain babies in your unholy rituals."

This is interesting and sounds like there's something bigger going on. They are looking for excuses to fire people, which makes me think something is financially wrong, perhaps....someone embezzling a bit too much and they don't have enough to pay wages perhaps? It happened here recently.

Whatever it is, I hope things work out for you and anyone else who has to face hardship from it.

Good luck and do let us know anything you find out....

This completely sucks!

Still might be worth a visit to HR. Just go in and say that you are unclear about why you were fired, and let them explain it to you carefully and thouroughly.
Be nice, take notes, get it in writing...whatever.

Don't try to defend yourself, just use it as an information gathering session. don't bring up anyone but yourself, and if anyone tries to turn it into something else, just say. All I want to know is exactly why I was let go.

anyway...just a suggestion, but do what you think is best. A tape recorder might be handy...if you don't yet have a lawyer to take with you.

hugs,

cheddar

I'm no longer allowed on the property. The paper they made me sign (which BRIEFLY describes why i was let go) says that "I understand I am to give my badge back and i am no longer allowed on ____ property again" ... so yea... me going up there would probably be a bad idea.

I did call a lawyer-- still waiting for her to get back to me-- she said she's having to work from home b/c the internet is down at her office so it'll take her a little longer... .

The company has been in buisness for 71 years.... its a company that takes school photos for the vast majority of the country (and some in canada and mexico) --- its employee owned and blah blah blah... unless we're going Exxon with this... i don't think theres a financial issue.... but I could be wrong-- and I hadn't thought of that-- thanks!
First shift was left totally untouched-- nobody fired, etc...
Just 2nd shift--- which we were down to having a single digit # of employees anyway--- we're supposed to have 30 plus... just like first shift has... (32 on first shift-- counted them last week as they were clocking out).
there have been several people walk-out in the last month, which is what started the drama-- people arguing, gossiping, its just out of hand....

well... i'll update with what the lawyer tells me

Thanks

On the contrary, she should forward it anonymously to her employer....(not really)...:)

Not meaning to make light of the situation, hoping for the best outcome to all this for you.

Wow, that is horrible that you have to go through this. *hugs*

Did you have more senior people on the 2nd shift? I mean, were they getting paid more? I worked for a company once that really tried to get rid of their more seasoned employees to save some money. It bit them in the butt when their productivity was crap though.

I know that it stinks to have people afraid of you at work because you are Pagan. I had one associate that was constantly grabbing my hand and trying to save me every chance she got. *shakes head* Others just stayed away and whispered. I don't get people.

QFT, I'm a Christopagan but I don't feel the need to scream it everywhere I go but I don't always feel the need to hide either. I think it's good to let people know who you are but you shouldn't let others feel inferior to you.

PandoraHealer - you could always point out to this woman (quite politely of course) that telling everyone that she's a "good christian woman" repeatedly and loudly tends to make people think that she is exactly the opposite. It works for awhile at least, in the situations I've encountered with people like this. ;)

Flat out telling her that you find her comments offensive can work too, depending on the type of environment you're in. It's really harassment of a sort (isn't everything these days?) and if it really irks you, you can take it higher up and request that something be said. (I've always hated this route personally, but it does the trick also.)

I'm more of a mind-set to be ornery towards these people and make them uncomfortable in return until they get the hint... but I have a little bit of a mean streak when it comes to things like this and people who just don't get it.

ETA: :hugz: I didn't read the rest of the thread before responding to your original post. Keep us posted on how things are going!

I've generally handled discrimination in the workplace by going to toe-to-toe with it. Eye to eye with those that hate and deride you. The way I see it, they are already working hard, on their own time and energy to try and put you down, might as well make it as challenging as possible.
I mean proper channels of communication are always a good thing, but when your HR director admits to not respecting anyone that doesn't testify to Jesus's power or attend his church and openly brags that though his policies are contrary to Civil Rights law he has enough clout and fellow christians in the area that he is confident nothing ever is going to come of it, its best to just roll up your sleeves and prepare for the worst.

Well, I've not really gotten anywhere with the discrimination issue.... been 2 weeks now... oh well i gues...

I have spoken to the other people that were fired-- we talk a lot now, developed some nice friendships through the place...
I still talk to some of the people that still work there-- spent mother's day with one of them-- it was nice.

Came home today to an email that included this link:

This is the company I worked for--- I'm loving the bad publicity!!

Brightened my day up quite nice.

The school this happened to, would have processed thier job through the plant I worked at-- the HQ dept. is in Minesota but the plant this job went through is here in Oklahoma where I worked---

I'm totally stoked about it b/c I know the people in charge of high school photos and I hope they all got fired!!!

hahahhahaaha!
