I was at Rag Shop yesterday (a craft store) and all of the Halloween decorations are out. My kids, my son especially, was in heaven!!! Halloween has been his favorite holiday ever. It has always been one of mine too. There are so many nice decorations just crying out to be bought too.

Anyone else excited that Halloween is...only 2 1/2 months away......??

:boing:

Me! Me! Me! I love Hallowe'en! It's my favorite holiday. I decorate the house, the yard, spend the whole day in costume, the door has a screaming doormat etc etc etc.

Hopefully the new job will let us work in costume. The *only* downside to not telecommuting in October will be that I can't indulge in horror movies at lunch.

I went into my local craft shop. ALL the Halloween stuff is on sale. It took all my self control not to buy up everything. One aisle was filled with these cute light up houses. I'm definitely going back to get them.

Halloween is definitely one of my most favorite holidays.

I detest overcommercialization.

Halloween in August?? Christmas in October?? What the --BLEEP!-- is up with this??

My dd has been asking for months to have her birthday party that day, like last year. So I'm sure it will be a busy, fun day for us. And she will officially become a teen!!

PB, If you do crafts for Halloween or hand make your costumes for Halloween, you're all ready late in starting..... And If you do Christmas or Yule, you'd better be thinking hard about what you want to do now!!!!!!!!!!

That's why I have gift threads up already :)

PB, I completely agree with you about over-commercialization of holidays. (I saw a commercial for Christmas music in July -- I kid you not. My boys grabbed the clicker and changed channels, because they know I go ballistic over those. )

But Old Witch is right. Hallowe'en crafts must be already started or you'll spend the week before frantically knitting/gluing/sewing etc. instead of enjoying things.

If it was possible, I'd make a law against any holiday ads/shows being allowed up before one calendar month before the day, with the exception of craft stores. And while I was at it, I'd include a permanent ban on all infomercials and paid political commercials. In a perfect world...:bigredgri

I like Halloween. I have already been thinking about autumn and Halloween. I saw the cutuest cupcakes on a cover of Quick Cooking magazine. The spice cupcakes look like little apples. They have red frosting on them. The stem is a little piece of black licorice, and the leave is a green gumdrop. I'm telling you this on the Halloween thread, because you can easily turn these apple cupcakes into little pumpkins by using orange frosing and the green gumdrop for the pumpkin stem. I think that kids and adults will like the looks and tastes of these cupcakes.

I really hate the overcommercialization of holidays too. I heard the Christmas CD commercial last month too,Ugh!

Now that I'm employed and can rent DVDs again without guilt, I pounced on the director's cut of Carnival of Souls. This one is a 9 on the bizarre list. One year I dressed up as the spooky dead guy who follows the herione around, freaking her out. I definitely recommend this on Hallowe'en or the night before. Match it with the original Night of the Living Dead, and maybe The Seventh Seal, and you'll creep everyone out!

I love that cupcake idea! I think I'll make some up for my son to share at school.

I like all the fun stuff you can do that day. I like it even more than I can act like myself more openly and not get looked at strangely. People put out candles, pumpkins, etc. anyway. Now when I put out my lights to guide my friends & family that have passed to Summerland, people just think it's part of the house decor. ;)

I love halloween too. My friends think I'm nuts for already asking what everyone is doing for it. My birthday is close to it so they don't really mind me going alittle nuts :D

What really stinks this year is that i've got an evening class on Halloween night. but i think a friend of mine is going to have a party either on halloween or the following weekend.

My mom always made my costumes. I've never had a store bought one. (ok just thought i'd add that) ;)

hehe the little girl I babysit wants me to be Sailor Moon again, and she wants to be Sailor Venus, so we can go together. . . ahh! It's my last halloween as a kid!! *cry!* I turn 18 in November! It'll never be the same again. . .

oh well! *dons her cheap blond wig done up carefully in odangos and pigtails* Let's go!

Now I just want to double-check with her parents that she's actually doing this. . . 'cause if she isn't I'm going to be something else :D

:T In cooking class a couple of years ago, we made these cupcakes with orange icing on top. On that, we put black icing lines from the centre to the edge then run through the lines with toothpicks to make "spiderwebs". And on some of them, we put brown smarties (for those not in Canada, brown Reese' pieces work just as well) with little black icing legs going out from the "body" to make spiders. :) I thought it was a pretty neat idea.l

If any of you come across good links to ideas, recipes, decoarations, crafts, etc, post em here.

If we come up with a bunch, I can stick this until Halloween/Samhain is over :)

I love Halloween. We always have a big Halloween party and I plan from one Halloween to the next too.
Last year the item I spent the most money on was my fog machine! I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT! (I love lay-away).
The first few parties we had were in the barn and were wonderful. When we moved here and the barn didn't have electricty in it so the party has been in our front yard. Hubby has promised me that he'll have the electricty supplied to the barn so we can party there this year.

My friend used to have a "Halloween Caroling" party every year before she got really busy with college. It's kind of like trich-or-treating except that you get to sing and older people can get away with it. Sometimes they even give you more candy!:D

Pardon me while I burn with jealousy for a moment or two. I want one, too!

I love, love, love Halloween! I like to really do up my front porch for the entertainment of the local kids. Last Halloween having been a little quiet due to being so soon after Sept. 11, I got a really great feeling when one of the mothers actually *thanked* me for still going all out and making it special for her kid. (pause for warm fuzzies)

I try to add something new every year. This year, I was inspired by the scene in the Great Hall in "Harry Potter" - all those floating jack-o-lanterns. I can't do anything nearly on that scale, of course, but I do want a few. Michael's, a nearby craft store has foam pumpkins that you can carve, so I'm thinking a few of those, some invisible fishing line, some orange glowsticks (candles wouldn't be very safe, the things are probably flammable), and I should be in business. :)

But I would really love a fog machine! I have a little bitty one that's made to go in tabletop fountains, but the fog doesn't go very far. It looks great coming out of a little black cauldron on a nearby table, though.

I've loved Halloween since I was a little girl. Even my brief brush with Christianity in high school couldn't dispel it. (the church I went to was somewhat disapproving of it) Even my skepticism and occasional bouts of cynicism can't dispell it. The thing I've always loved is that for one night of the year, you can be ANYTHING you want to be. A nerdy girl can be a beautiful princess, a timid kid can be a mighty warrior, a somewhat staid person can be a wild thing... there's a feeling of something untamed and free in the air, and any possibilty is open. That's the magic of Halloween to me.

That's my two cents. (Looks more like five, though... :) )

Floating Jack-O-Laterns? Heres what my husband did:
Use small goards.
Cut the opening from bottom.
Carve your face.
Sting them on a hevy wire.
Use tea lights.
Tape the bottom in place with duck tape.

Were gonna try this idea with small pumpkins this year hanging in different locations on a clothes hanger. Test this out several times before hand to make sure the pumkin or gourd won't tear through your wire.

My fog machine has a skull w/red lights in the eyes and the fog blows out the mouth. It fogs up the whole field!:) The only thing I didn't like about it is it's kinda noisey so I set it off in the corner somewhere. I believe it was around $60.00. Like I said, I love lay-away. BUT, on Nov. 1, they were on sale for like $40.00.

Before we moved here the church I attened had lots of kids and we did Halloween! We decorated the fellowship hall and had a Halloween party for the kids. Told ghost stories, food, music, dancing, customes....the whole 9 yards! Not many kids go to the church we attend now, so no church party.....just the one at my place.:D

If you all promise not to be cruel, I'll post some pictures of me when I was in Junior High (I think Seventh grade) in a couple of Halloween Costumes. I think I'm dressed as a Geisha in one, and a Punkrocker in another. Although, my punkrock costume looked far more like a "lady of the night" so to speak. lol.

How cute Danus!!

I should try to find some of my old Halloween pictures. I love dressing up. :)

I was a punk rocker one year and stuck all these safety pins through nude color stockings and through my ears. My mom was so grossed out

Another year I was a NY Ranger, with some other girls. I blacked one of my eyes and blacked out my teeth- pretty funny looking. heh!

Awwwwwwwwww..the gypsy costume is absolutely adorable!!!!! I like the "Spirit" idea, too. I'm guessing the "Spirit" was from "The Christmas Carol". Spirit of Christmas past, present, or future?

My neighbors aren't very religious, but their family is. Last year, for Halloween, the family gave my neighbors child a costume as a "Gift". It was a "Noah" costume (as in Noah's Arc.) Unfortunately, people kept thinking someone had dressed him up as Osama Bin Ladin.

It was inspired by a costume that I saw in an amature production of "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes", which was actually just a bathrobe, but I thought it looked pretty.

I found Trey's costume. As you guys may know he is a Spiderman nut...of course there are plenty of those at the local stores, but no he has to be the Green Goblin. I was beginning to lose hope when my Mom told me she had sen one in a Lillian Vernon catalogue. Well I just checked and they have an online catalogue too and I bought it...it will be here in a few days. he is going to be so thrilled. i will definately post a pic when it gets here. they had some cute ones if anyone is still needing one and wants to avoid the stores. Welcome aboard!! You and my son would get along great...he loves to sing Yule songs. Last year we made a CD for our parents with a few traditional Christmas songs.....He is still singing them to this day. The best part was his cute lil voice singing, "we wish we could merry christmas..." He just didn't quite get the lyrics right. Like father like son!! We may have to release it to the boards this year, as we will certainly be too busy to do another one! Mol did a great Winter Wonderland. Maybe I will mention it in Music forum!!

My daughter and I are going as Mother and Daughter Vampires.
We're going to the Louisville Zoo's Halloween Party.
We'll probably hit that twice. It runs all weekends in October!
Then we'll go to our local town for the candy walk:D
I wan't to get all my costumes worth LOL!
I'll see if I can get some pics of us to put up here;)

I like Halloween much more than Yule because,
1. Candy
2. You can be who/whatever you want.
3. CANDY!
4. The weather is warmer, you can do more outside like bonfires.
5. CANDY!
6. less garbage to throw away the next day.
and finally
7. CANDY CANDY CANDY!!!

We pulled the decorations out of the barn loft yesterday.
Will spend today setting it all up.
I wanna have it done by Friday evening.
That is when the birthday party for the youngest is.
Were gonna have a bonfire, roast hot dogs, make smores and if I can talk Hubby into it, a hay ride.

Oh, he's gonna be 7.
