Oh that sounds bad.

Forgive my ignorance though, I've done next to zero research on Crowley so I'm not in the know. Why was he batshit mental?

Do some research from a neutral source and you'll see why.

He's a mentalist. Totally making up rituals and such to get himself laid. Declaring himself THY GRAND BEAST 666. Wearing hilarious hats. Getting women to **** goats to orgasm and then at the point of climax cutting the goats throat.

He was a magnificent character and an absolute loon, but hilariously good fun!

HAIL SATAN. etc.

Crowley was a wonderful man. Utterly looney, but yes... Lovely. No more harmless than your misguided 14 year old in black eyeliner.

Am I the only one totally amused about the fact "wearing hilarious hats" made that list?

I think it'd be quicker to list the ways in which he WASN'T batshit mental.

Apparently, Aleister Crowley and his hilarious hats were the inspiration for Tinky Winky.

I don't know, he did get to work with Jack Parsons. I call that at least being smart by association(since Jack had WAY more insight into what the hell Crowley was playing with), that and his contribution to the modern interpretation of Qabalah and thus his influence on the Western Mystery Tradition is pretty significant.

But yeah Stormbeard, those hats were awesomely geeky.

There is an Excellent Biography on him which is actually one of the few Authorized and Approved of by the OTO. It is in the begining of his book "Magick in practice and theory" Liber ABBA..

I dissagree with him being a Satanist as he was a Thelemic.

He did have a bit of a drug problem and died a very uncomfortable death, but his contributions to Hermetic Magick are greatly significant.

At one point I recall reading something about how he got too arrogant and decided he did not need the safety of a circle when summoning a demon.. I believe that did not go so well for him.

For such a brilliant Master who had it all at one time, he met his end in a lonely miserable manner I would not wish on anyone.

Hanging around intelligent people does not make you intelligent. I mean both George Bush Jr & Sr went to Yale.

No, but coming with something on the fly and getting people to follow it blindly is pretty clever.

And the Ivy League is just an athletic conference, not a yardstick of human intelligence.

Oh but of course, :hehehehe: I won't dispute you on that one lol

One would have to be to wear those hats.

Some of the great minds and contributors to society were all batshit mental, Einstien, Da Vinci, etc..

Van Gogh I'll give you, because his mentality let him to slice off his honker in a fit of depression at losing a good friend. The mental illness which eventually caused him to commit suicide. But he was a great artist, suggesting that he was not only touched by the muse, but repeatedly blugeoned him across the head until he was dribbling paintings.

And then there is Poe,

madd as a hatter at the tea party, yet one of the most revered authors and required of High School lit classes.

Makes you wonder what is going on when our society does these types of double standards...

"Yeah, read his works, study them well, but ignore his biography, that will not be on the exam" lol

Jack Parsons blew himself up. I'm not sure how smart that is.

And you guys must not read much Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Aziraphale is an angel in 'Good Omens' and Crowley is his demon buddy. Hilarious book, by the way.

True enough, though his development of JATO units and his role in the development of solid fuel are pretty freakin noteworthy. More than anything those Nazi's we saved from the soviet.

As it turns out, his handling of fulminate of mercury was shoddy at best.

Ah well, everyone linked to Crowley or Hubbard are going to be branded freaks, loonies and utter-nutbars regardless.
