Even if your cat is lazy, you probably won't have trouble with mice. By now, the mouse scouting party has reported back to HQ that there is an on-site cat, & the mouse parliament has voted to relocate.
I saw a mouse in my house twice in 19 years. The first time, 15 years ago, a mouse reconoitered through the library while the cats I had then sat around & ignored the situation ("You get it...you're bigger than we are.")
I saw another last spring, when I came home & found a dead one on display on the kitchen floor, with two very proud female felines waiting for me to laud their hunting prowess (the male had gone to hide upstairs). I know won't see one any time soon.
Here is one thing to consider. With my last brace of cats, I never allowed them in the basement, until I found evidence that mice were there, just not coming upstairs where the cats were. The current trio of cats are 'free range', so I haven't seen any evidence of any more mice elsewhere in the house.

We had a mouse in our house once... he actually figured out how to get the cheese off the trap without hurting himself...

....they are not good to have around! Spread diseases etc. I had a cat and didn't have mice. I figure there is a connection...

Mice are looking for places to live through the winter now....they will be seeking entry. Look for places they can get in and close them up. Protects your energy bills too.

Traps are icky but effective....but use peanut butter for bait. Find a safe way to dispose of them.

Scrub everything, everywhere you see them...seal foods in tin or glass....no food =no mice!

Sorry, but you haven't seen folks die because of mice spreading diseases like we have in the Southwest. :(
