"Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name,
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game."

okay, here's a new game for ya!
actually it's just a twist on the old one, but it's been a while so i thought it might be fun to run with it once again.

i'll start it off by posting the attributes of some deity, and then it is up to you to figure out who i'm refering to. whoever answers it correctly gets to post the clue for the next god/dess. note that it is the attribute we're going for here, not necessarily a mythological or literary reference. however this could be a physical attribute OR an associated tool, device, symbol, etc., or possibly even a mannerism.
for instance, i post...

I hold the key.

now if you answered Pele, you'd be wrong, and we'd all point and snicker (just kidding!).
but if you responded with Hekate you would be correct, and then you would post the next deity.

okay, so i'll get it going with an easy one;

I am usually found at my forge.

good luck!

Yes, that's it, I wasn't sure if people were going to get it, I was going to leave it at 'I am the essence of the date', but I wasn't sure if people knew about Inanna's connections with dates at all (that's what she orignally was, when she started out, she was the essence of the date).

very good!

I almost went with Ahura Mazda until I realized that people might not know anatolian mythology as well as Roman myth.

Its true. Mithra/Mitra/Mirthas is known and found in three major regions: India, Persia and the greater Roman empire. And for a while the Mithras cult was at competition with the Jesus Christ cult. If history ahd played out differently, you might find Mithraism as one of the leading religions as opposed to Christianity.

Theres

very true. in fact, it is really not very well hidden in the current 'Big Three'.
most biblical scholars agree that Christ was born in the Spring or early Summer (i believe), but Mithras' birthday was December 25th.

Also, I've heard that Mithraism didn't allow women in its ranks, so, if people complain about how Christianity treats women, imagine what they'd say if Mithraism was the main religion!.

It's quite interesting to think how the world might be if Mithraism was the main religion (I'd like to learn a lot more about Mithras, Mithraism, Zoroastrianism, the pre-Zoroastrian Persian religion and deities, etc, as they sound really interesting, and, IMO, quite cool).

Well, one of the the reasons it didn't grow very large was because they didn't allow women into their religion. Christians, if anything, welcome females in the early days, just not as clergy- really most of the nobles that converted to Christianity did so because their wives were Christians. Mithraism remained a male-only mystery religion, and as such stunted its own growth, leading to it eventually dying out.

Hmm... running out of clues on this one.

The reference to cider has less to do with the deity and more to do with the people whose ancestors worshipped him. Same with the reference to independence.

So we have a God of Storms and Fire, who warns the people before he strikes. His storms are born when two other deities form a union. One of those deities is a Lady and the other takes the form of a snake.

And all of this happens hails from the area of Northern Spain and Southern France - the same culture still lives there today. And because I really didn't mean for this one to be this hard, he hails from one of the cultures that is not descended from the Indo-Europeans.

Heyy okay, so an idea's just popped into my head. why not make this game a little interesting... and post images only of certain Gods or Goddesses.

Ofcourse certain pantheons look all the same, or are similar... but others are distinguishable only by their attributes or what theyre holding.

what do you think?? :D

Toby - I like it for the basis for a second game thread... this one for written clues, maybe another separate one for Guess the God(dess) - or named something more clever than that - dealing only with pictures... Don't worry, sometimes, the challenging ones are really good, and can make us learn more (I didn't know much about the Basque religion, deities, beliefs, etc, but I now know about Eate, and I might look up some Basque deities, beliefs, their religion, etc).

It is my bright light that leads those in life and in death. At times I act as a messenger of the gods. The people that worship me are seafaring...

Think brighter than the moon.

She's not well known...I hope people can guess!

So now you have me thinking Phoenician... seafaring and famous for their purple dye produced from the glands of sea snails for royalty...

Tanith (or Tanit) - a goddess of the heavens, stars and the moon?

Right pantheon! She is Phonecian.
Wrong goddess, though.

Another clue:
"...can be an ambivalent Deity, depending on the time of year, who can either cause the crops to grow with Her gentle warmth or wither from Her excessive heat. "

Remember she is linked to a weather phenomena, only not the dawn or the night. Something...brighter.

She is also a herald, messenger and psychopomp.

Ok-I rule over harvest, death, and winter. I go by a few names, the real difference being only geography.

Persephone?
Seeing as her abduction lead to winter. And she's linked to death and such.
