“Ten years ago I could never have imagined I’d be doing this,” says Greg Pal, 33, a former software executive, as he squints into the late afternoon Californian sun. “I mean, this is essentially agriculture, right? But the people I talk to – especially the ones coming out of business school – this is the one hot area everyone wants to get into.”
He means bugs. To be more precise: the genetic alteration of bugs – very, very small ones – so that when they feed on agricultural waste such as woodchips or wheat straw, they do something extraordinary. They excrete crude oil.
Unbelievably, this is not science fiction. Mr Pal holds up a small beaker of bug excretion that could, theoretically, be poured into the tank of the giant Lexus SUV next to us. Not that Mr Pal is willing to risk it just yet. He gives it a month before the first vehicle is filled up on what he calls “renewable petroleum”. After that, he grins, “it’s a brave new world”.

Back! There are supposedly plenty of ways of making oil, a German scientists pressure heats mulch and can produce any grade of oil - or so he claims. I've yet to see any peer review though.

I have no idea how viable a concept this is commercially, but according to the article, they plan to have a commercial installation ready by 2011. It will be impressive if they can.

Mmm... bug juice.

Hey, if this works, that would be awesome!

But I agree - peer reviewed studies, please.

I've heard whispers about bio-tech modifications like these bugs... just don't know how believable it is... even if it does appear in the paper.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a chemical engineer not too long ago. A couple decades prior he was part of a project to change coal into oil... they were successful... only NOW are they seriously tossing the idea around. (read: WV really wants to keep it's mining rights)
