I just signed up for the second time (since I had to 'drop out' of the first one) for a free online course that's offered by Barnes and Noble University.

Just thought I would post the link in case anyone's interested in enrolling ~ I'd love to have a study partner! :)

http://educate.barnesandnobleuniversity.com/educate/bn/home/catalog/overview.jsp?productId=6268&userid=52RNJ00UY0&nhid=bn

Last time, I got about halfway through and found it to be a helpful learning tool.

I have just decided that I wanted to learn Tarot and was coming here to post a question concerning what everone thought a good beginner deck might be when I saw your post. I was so excited! :(I would love to take this course with you....but alas I don't have the book! My Mama-in-Law gave me that very deck back at the beginning of the summer. If I can somehow get the book before the course begins I'll let you know. Maybe you can get a different partner by then

Like WC, I'd love to take the course, but don't have the book (nor the funds to buy it. :() *sigh* Maybe next time around, aye?:)

lol you all crack me up!

The book is exactly the same as her web site! www.learntarot.com So, if you can access the site, you are looking at the book!....just without page numbers. :D

No more excuses! Sign up! ;) It's a good course!

Don't forget to look at these threads either:

Also just browse through the back pages here for more information on learning how to read the cards. ;)

Thanks for posting all that Dagda! I was going to say the same thing (which I guess it would have helped if I'd done that in the beginning)! :D

Her site is also great for finding out some basic info on various decks and seeing sample cards.

Also, you don't even need the RW deck, although it helps to at least have a deck that follows the meanings of the traditional Tarot, which many do.

Hope you guys decide to take it ~ the classes start September 9th, I think. Then we could have a study group! :)

Just read my confirmation from B&N.
It said the class starts at 12AM.
Does that mean I gotta take that class at midnight?
I've never taken online classes before and thought you could take 'em whenever as long as you completed the lessons.
If I gotta be on at midnight I may not be able to do this.
Anybody got some insight?

Jeleia

I was wondering the same thing

Cinnamon Girl
September 6th, 2002, 01:19 PM
Yes, you can do it at any time, that's just when the class officially starts and the first lesson is posted. Every few days a new lesson will be posted but you can still go at your own pace.

Once the class starts, the classroom will open up and there should be an introduction by the instructor. That is also where we can post questions, comments, etc. and interact with the other participants.

Last time I was in it (earlier this year) the instructor also had set up an MSN community for the course where additional information and materials were posted as well at a chat room.

:)

Dagda Moon~Lily
September 6th, 2002, 01:25 PM
lol, no...you don't have to be online at that time.

You were right to assume that you read the lesson and do the assignments at your own pace. The lesson will be available online after midnight on the starting date....then I believe they will let you know when the following lessons are available. :D

Then you just post questions and discuss the lessons on the message board at the B&N site.

Hope this helps! ;) Any more questions??

the teacher lister wasn't joan. did i sign up for the wrong one?Nope, you've got the right one. Although she oversees the course, she actually assigns someone else to be the instructor. I did notice the instructor this time round is different from the one who taught before. :)

The classroom is now open! It looks a lot different than the last time I took this class, so it will take some getting used to, but from a first glance it looks like a better setup.

I'm planning on using my Spiral Tarot deck, since I like it so much better than the Universal Waite, which is the deck I used before. I've gone through and done a card-by-card comparison and there are only a few that don't really depict the same scene, even though their divinatory meanings seem compatible.

By the way, I'm using my real name on there, which is Lesley. See you in class! :)

I took the 1st quiz tonight on lesson 1.
How far along are ya'll?

(By the way MoonOwl and Flaire, I appreciate your repling to my PM's. I was so confused - but I think things are better now!)

What do you all think about making this thread a little study group area for the course?

Witchy, I'm glad you are finding your way around okay! :)

I have finished Lesson 1 and have started my daily card readings and journal keeping. So far so good!

I've been using my Spiral deck and am really enjoying getting more familiar with it.

And, I think I may actually undertake a little crafting project  and make a tarot bag for them. Considering my biggest sewing project since Jr. High Home Ec class has been sewing on a button, this is a big deal for me! :p

No problem. :heartthro

Sounds good to me. I'm having an aweful time navigating through their message boards there. (And they take so long to load! )

hehe... I should use my Spiral deck too.. See if we come up with the same things. ;)

I should really get back in that habit. It's been hard enough to remember to keep up with my regular journal entries.

Ooh! Tarot bags are really easy. :) I'm kinda a goof when it comes to sewing things, but the bags I can do no problem.

I don't think I'll be posting much there. I am reading post by other folks.
I started my "daily draw" today. My card was the "Hanged Man".
I wrote down the key words and kept them posted on my monitor at work and watched for signs today. Then when I got home I read the section on him and I think I may have gotten some insight.
I'm finding this very interesting.
After everyone has taken the first quiz I have a thought for discussion. Let me know.:)

Flaire-FireStar

I've taken it. (Did #2 today) :D

I'm all up for your discussion, WC! :)

Cinnamon Girl

Me too! :D

I'm planning on starting the second lesson this weekend, but would love to get a discussion going on here!

And I agree, I won't be posting much there either ~ the way the posting is set up there makes conversations confusing.

So WC, what's your thought?

Question #9
Which object best descrives the function of the tarot?
a. hammer
b. mirror
c. dictionary
d. calculator
e. painting

I got this wrong. I marked hammer and they had the correct answer as mirror. I understand mirror as the answer and nearly marked it; as the tarot reflects your life. But you can change the reflection of the tarot, and that is the reason for asking questions.....to improve your situtation.

I chose hammer because it is a tool. Much the same way the tarot is a tool. You use tarot as a tool to show direction. Maybe a compass would be a better answer.

Flaire-FireStar
September 13th, 2002, 12:21 AM
I had a hard time between mirror and painting. Because when you view a painting, you get your own impression of what the painter was trying to show. Same with the Tarot. :)

Cinnamon Girl
September 13th, 2002, 09:14 AM
Well, I’m gonna kind of sit on the fence here and say that I think the tarot is a hammer, a mirror and a painting. I agree with you WC, that it is like a hammer in the sense that it is a tool, and a mirror in that it reflects our lives. Like a mirror, it will change according to how we appear at that moment and what is put in front of it. I didn’t really consider a painting, until you brought it up Flaire, but I do see and agree with your logic. :)

While I do think that perhaps a combination of the three objects would be the best descriptor, given that it had to be one or the other, I think mirror is probably the best choice, as that is what it most clearly functions as, whereas I think the other two are supplemental features.

Yeah...Give me true or false! (I've been getting those right) ;)

Hey Flaire, sorry I just noticed that you'd added to your post. I was having trouble Saturday night too but eventually was able to get in and haven't had any problems since. Did it get resolved on your end too?

I'd like to ask a question ~ I've seen some posts in the classroom about the purposes and effectiveness of ritual. So, what do you think about it? Do you have any rituals when it comes to your deck or readings?

Flaire-FireStar
September 17th, 2002, 09:40 PM
I don't really do any rituals for a tarot reading, myself. I just calm myself down with some music, incense and candles before I read. :)

I've just now reached lesson four and am excited about doing my very first reading.

I will probably go to my Altar in the Woods. Since I live in a house with a husband and 3 boys I'll be doing this just to insure that I'm not disturbed. I will take candle, and inscese with me and maybe a CD player with some meditative music.

Witchy Cowgirl
September 18th, 2002, 09:16 PM
OK ya'll! I'm at lesson 4, doing your first reading.
I'm having a problem posing my question.
Are any of ya'll having that problem?
Do I ask something general or should I be more specfic.

Like if I ask, "How do I put myself in a better finicial situtation?" I already know the answer....save more money, put money in the bank, find a better job, etc.
Do I ask, "What do I need to know to become competive in the barrel racing arena?" The answer is get my own truck and trailer, pull Jake out of the field and practice, then hit the road.
I'm a little scared and nervous to ask about the outcome of my Daddy's heart procedure.

Anybody got any wisdom to bestow here?

I signed up :) I don't have the book (yet), but I hope the site works as well... I have the deck, though.

I'll - in a way - lose connection (somewhat - I'll have dial-up. Pay-per-minute.) to the internet in the middle of March, but I'll do my best to attend. :)

Morrighana
February 27th, 2003, 05:25 PM
Pay per minute dialup? Ouch. I had that when I was in Germany. What I did, and this might work for you depending on your provider, is load a page, disconnect, read it, type whatever replies in my word proccessors, recconnect, send, load the next one, disconnect, etc. Granted, it was a major pain in the butt, but I kept up with all of my email accounts and forum postings and other websites I visit regularily. I couldn't really participate in any chats or instant messenger programs, but I made do.

Anyway, the class looks like fun, I hope you don't miss too much!

Well, I have to pay 5 cents for each connection I make, so it wouldn't work. Then it's another cent per minute. The last time I lived at home, I gave my parents $600 phone bills (over a three-month period)... I don't wanna do that again!

Oh well... The area I'll be living in is getting something broadband-like in May (or so they say - I've heard that many times before), so I'll have to live through it. And I'll have a computer at my boyfriend's place (broadband), so I can get online for longer periods of time at least once or twice a week.

Good grief. I would hate to see my phone bill in that situation.
