View Full Version : Reiki Attunements?

Hello Everyone!
I have a question for the Reiki healers at the forum, how long does it take to achieve all 3 levels (attunements) of Reiki? I ask this because I have read that some Masters train one day for each level. Could that be right 3 days and you are a Reiki master? hmmm. Then, I have seen some say 3 months between each Reiki level. I have even seen on Ebay people selling all 3 attunements with certificates for $30.00 giving the attunements from a distance. I would appreciate any input on this? Thank you!

The best person I know to answer this would be Dagda. She gave me my first attunement and it was awesome, (warning..they are powerful and hers have been known to induce pregnancy in some folks!!:D ) Dagda has recently had a new addition to her family, so she is a little busy I am sure. She may not see this for a while, so I will shoot her a pm and tell her about it. There may be a better forum to move it to, but we will wait for a bit. Good luck to you.

 I didn't realize that different masters had different requirements on that. The masters that I have gotten my attunements from have certain requirements; i.e., for Reiki III, which I'm planning to do soon, you must hold your Reiki II for 45 days and do a certain number of hands-on and long-distance treatments.
>sighs< I think that things have gotten out of control on the Internet regarding Reiki. The sacred symbols can be found anywhere and there are people selling certificates, etc. While I am a strong believer in long-distance treatments and attunements since I've had some powerful ones myself, I prefer to get them hands-on.

I prefer to have my students wait at least 21 days between attunement just to get through each cleansing process that the attunement invokes. I also require that my students submit to me "Case Studies" for each level. These are the hands on experience that will be their learning sessions. That way they get feed back from both their client and the teacher. ;)
Some places you can get all three attunements in one session....over a weekend .....whatever pace you are comfortable getting them.
I tend to do more distant attunements than hands on. I've done both and I find each are equally powerful. I don't have a preference.
Many teachers will give the attunements for free and charge for the "proof of attunement and lineage"....the certificate. Others will charge whether they give a certificate or not.
Summary: it all depends on the teacher, how they were taught and their ethics.

... I'd love to have my second attunement, and I know from Silver just how special she found your attunement... but I don't want the side-effects!!!! So forgive me if I avoid coming to you for attunement...
And congratulations on your blessing... speaking to Silver tonight, she can't wait to give birth.
Peace and happiness to you and yours,

At the risk of sounding stupid (heehee, won't be anything new for me:)) ...what is the philosophy behind attunements? I know about Reiki only from a meditation instructor I once had and FAQs on the web. The whole idea just doesn't make sense to me.

... we all have the ability to access Ki, but it seems to take an attunement to awaken the ability. I'd had Reiki treatments (from Silver) before I was attuned, and it opened my hand chakras - I felt them tingling continuously afterwards - and I could direct energy with my hands very easily after the treatments. But it always took something away from me - I would feel very tired after any energy work with my hands. After I was attuned, I felt energised and fresh after energy work/healing, and I began to realise that before I was sending my personal energy out of my body, whereas after I was directing a flow of energy that was not created from me, but flowed through me. If that makes any sense.
Any one else have any insights? I'm not very good at explaining this!!

 Neither am I. I seem to have a harder time explaining Reiki than I do anything else! After my attunements, it seemed that my faith in Reiki energy and understanding of the symbols deepened. That's the best I can do!
I'm doing my Reiki III in about two weeks. My Master likes to do III attunements around the Full Moon, and she can't explain why either! :T

Id like to add some thoughts here to what has already been said
Reiki Attunements act as a key so to speak, we can all use our personal energy to help ourselves and but like a glass of water, we only have so much stored in the belly at a time and giving this energy to others depletes it. So the attunement creates an imaginary jug of water which allows us to be continously filled with the energy like a tap and this universal energy mixes with our own personal Qi but we largely can then begin using universal Qi without adding much our own energy.
Also if you can learn to let the universal energy sink to your belly during the attunement process (both teacher and pupil) it will increase your own personal Qi supply.

I have read that traditionally, you normally get your 2nd attunement 3 months after the first, and your master degree, if you plan to go on, 3 years after that. Now, i do know that some people have been previously trained in holistic healing and energy healing, and some people may be able to handle reiki I and II in the same day, or same weekend. But in general i would suggest at least having the masters degree III done at least a couple months after the previous 2 degrees simply because the reiki needs times to manifest itself in you ( the more you use it, the stronger it gets). There is also the idea that after the attunements, i dont know if it is just one and two, or all of them, but your body cleanses each chakra, taking 3 days for each one, adding up to three weeks. Basically, at most i would suggest just practicing your Reiki, and seriously considering why you want to go onto III, assuming you plan to heal others during your life. Basically the only question i would have as to the time being is the whole question of giving other people treatments, and how much time you have had the Reiki to really absorb into you...

I would like to get my level 2 attunement but can't afford the $250 that my Reiki master charges. She says that if I ask someone else to do it for me (for less money of course) that there would be problems because they might not have been taught and attuned the same way that she was. Somehow this would set up some kind of bad vibes in me? I'm not sure I understand it, or agree with it. After all, I was doing energy healing long before I took the reiki class and got my attunements and they haven't messed up my abilities. Any thoughts from the more experienced Reiki people here?

Hi Lunacie and all
Reiki attunement could never harm or damage your abilities in any way, infact, i have recieved distance attunements from over seas and have studdied with three Reiki teachers and the attunement adds to what you have, so dont worry about it causing trouble.
It works only for the good.
And No matter how an attuenement is done, the intention is all that counts on the part of the teacher and student, i have used about three different ways and they all work well. So doing it differently doesnt matter.
In fact, Usui Sensei did not use once off attunements but an empowerment that the students recieved once a week or so, it was up to them to work with the energy and grow with it.
Hope that enforces your inner knowing a bit :)

My MIL has been a Reiki III master for quite a few years now, I've recieved treatments from her off and on throughout the years as have my children as well as my husband. I find it such a wonderful modality to learn.
I'm not very well read or educated on Reiki, not enough to teach someone however once I graduate from massage school I will go on to learn Reiki before I go on to upledger or some other school ~ it's a wonderful gift to have & to share.
Lunacie ~ Your Reiki masters opinion kind of bothered me, it almost made me feel as if she was saying that so she would get the $250, I appologize if that comment is out of line I don't mean to be rude as she may be a very kind person or perhaps even believe this to genuinely be true but I've never heard such things ~ I've been taught several diff. energy modalities (cranial sacral, accupressure, the beginnings of accupuncture as an example) and I've always been encouraged to continually seek as much info. as I can about this, to learn from others will help solidify my own thoughts & feelings. My MIL was taught Reiki I via our neighbor and then went on to recieve her other two levels from someone else & is wonderful at what she does :)

This thread revived at a good time...I am trying to find out more about Reiki, if for no other reason to help me with my chronic back pain.
Is $250 an attunement a good ball park figure? Just curious of who much money I'll need to find/ask for/beg.
And if I only would like/be able to afford the first level, is that typically suficient?
Sorry for stupid questions.

Chryssi, the first attunement is usually the most profound attunement, and the most noticeable one, simply because your energy channels have been awakened for the first time, the other 2 attunements increase that energy channel much more, but the first attunement is what people will usually take if they only need it to help some problems that they are having with themselves, or other physical problems ( or small mental ones ) with others. The second attunement deals with distance healing and sort of mental and inner work. It really depends if you plan to go on helping and healing others with Reiki, or if you just need to give yourself, or someone in your family a treatment from time to time ( or every day ). Hope that helps a bit!

Really interesting thread, everyone! I'd heard of Reiki before, but didn't really know much about it. I found this thread pretty informative as far as getting a general idea of things. As a matter of fact, you all have piqued my interest in the subject, I think I'll have to find out more about it, and possibly consider getting attuned! Thanks all. :)

Thanks for the info all. My Reiki master also keeps busy learning other techniques and encourages her students to do the same. In fact she offers classes in other techniques herself. I wasn't sure why she feels that receiving attunements from different masters would matter, except for a concern about different traditions. I learned the Usui tradition. I was so blown-away to hear the voice of Master Usui himself after my first attunement telling me I had done well. But now I've heard others say that he also gave them confirmation or validation. What a guy!

Hpw fortuitous that I came on here tonight and read this thread! My next career move is to study holistic medicine and the massage/healing arts, including reiki. I've been interested in it for years, but I've only recently decided to go ahead and do it.
I've been researching the schools around here, and only 2 in my whole county offer the reiki...I might seek out a reiki master privately though. I imagine there are quite a few out here, especially given the prevalence of everything else in that vein.
Thanks for the info, folks...I really need to soak up all I can!

All those that havent experienced Reiki before, go for it, even if it will cost a fair amount, you will definately not regret it.
Apart from opening up to the ability of healing energy, if you choose to, you can follow the path of this wonderful practice as it has much to offer and there is no end to it. It most definately is a Spiritual path on its own.
And it has helped me tremendously, removing fears, moving closer to the truth of life and not keeping it to myself but spreading its teachings to others.
Thankyou Usui Sensei (Gasho). :)
For those that arent familiar with reiki yet, Usui Sensei was the founder of The Reiki path and selflessly decided to spread reiki out to the public.

Hi everyone
I thought I'd share my experiences with Reiki attunements - I've had different attunements from different teachers, over different periods of time. The right teacher will crop up at the right time to teach you what you need to know. Learning Reiki is learning one of the many ways to connect with a universal healing energy that is available to everyone. It's a wonderful experience.
Each type of attunement has been different, all have been wonderful and all seem to recharge me. They remind me of my connection with this universal healing energy. Sometimes I'll do an attunement for myself as part of a meditation, other times as part of a healing. (I've done Reiki III where you learn how to do the attunements - some call it Reiki Master)
My first Reiki I took a month (4 classes, a couple of hours each). We got lots of hands on practice which was great. The class was small (4 of us). I don't remember having any 'cleansing' in the weeks after the attunement. However, I did Reiki myself daily as part of meditation for the month of the class (and when I thought of it afterwards) so maybe that helped. Especially as the meditation involved reiki-ing each chakra!
I did Reiki II about a year later. From memory it was pretty cheap ($100 to $150 Australian dollars each - is that US$60 - $100???) but prices range here drastically.
As an aside on price - one teacher I know teaches Reiki for $50 (US$30?) She feels it is a skill needed by everyone & pretty much gives the Reiki I for free - and she does each person individually.
When I did Reiki III my sister-in-law attuned me to I II & III (Master level - which to me only means I am able to attune others - I don't take it as a 'title' as I don't feel that I 'master' anything - just let the energy flow - my impression anyway)
About 6 months later I was attuned to Reiki I II and III again by another teacher over a single weekend, with the attunements being done in the park. Again I was in a small class (this time only 2!). This teacher gave us the option of being attuned for I or I & II only if we prefered. But usually gave the attunements as a set, along with the teaching. As it turned out the other person in the class had NOT received earlier Reiki training. While she chose to do all 3 over the weekend, she commented that too much unfamiliar information was given in too short a time & felt she should have only done I & II, leaving III for a few months. Eventhough she loved the attunement itself.
Since then I've practiced attuning myself, my partner and a distance attunement for my sister-in-law as an experiment. I'll do another in person when she comes to visit.
I haven't felt that any of the attunements were any better than the other, just different. I preferred being in small classes, and am glad I did them with some time separating each. I also thought that, for me, getting some 'refreshers' and 'whole attunements' (ie I II & III together) was beneficial. So is practice, practice, practice!!! (Besides, it feels great!)
I hope this gives some insight into some of the different options for attunement others to Reiki - I'm sure there are others.
Let the energy guide you! :-)
Blessings
IsisMoon

Jenne, something similar happened to me. Lately i have been extremely excited because i finally found out what i want to do with my life; i want to be a Naturopath. It will mix my love of herbal healing, with reiki and energy healing, and any other natural way of healing. This is truly something important to me as i have always felt lost, and now felt a new calling to something i had no idea existed!

I got my Reiki III last night
and mercy if I get pregnant ---- noooooooooo!
second I was told to expect a lot of release and some ups and downs this week. BUT I had vivid nightmares last night - the wake up screaming kind. I was not expecting that.
I have bad dreams often - but this was awful.
Any thoughts on that and more importantly NOT having more?????

As far as pricing, it's really up to the teacher and what they choose to charge. If you keep your eyes open, you can find free attunements. I know that mine all vary in pricing. The first one is just under $100, the second, just over $100, and the third one is the banger at $350. But like I said, it really depends on the teacher and their ethics and financial needs. I've heard of attunements going for 350 each level, on the other end of the scale, I've seen them as low as $45.00 for the first level and even free if you don't want the certificate.
You can go to this site: http://www.reikisecrets.com/index.htm?ad=google and sign up for their free attunement, I don't know what all is involved, but you could check it out.
For other information about Reiki you could try: (online manual) http://reiki-press.hypermart.net/ or (online manual and so much more!) www.angelreiki.nu
Both are good sites and I highly recommend both.
Just keep your eyes open. If it feels like a rip-off, then it's not right for you, and you should find a Reiki Master you feel comfortable with. I can't stress that enough!

First of all, ~**CONGRATULATIONS!**~ (you didn't get your attunement from me, so....pregnancy probably won't result! Besides, that was just a fluke. I've given attunements that didn't end with the nine-months-later syndrome! lol)
Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. You are going through the cleansing process. You are flushing the negativity out and that forces you to deal with it and move on. When you lay down to bed though, try doing some light, positive mediation and give yourself a quick calming reiki treatment. That might be just enough to keep your sub-conscious occupied while drifting off to fend off the nightmares. ;)

Everything happens for a reason right? :D
Well through a series of different events, I ended up in a Pagan store yesterday, got some awesome aura readings done on my kids and grabbed a brochure fromthe store. I have been in the store a bunch of times, but this was the first time I fel compelled to grab their pamplet. And would you know, they are having a Reiki 1 attunement in Oct at a great price and I have a babysitter lined up and the registration form is all ready to be mailed.
If all goes well (meaning the check deosn't get lost in the mail, the class isn't closed by the time they get the check etc) I'll be in this class. YAY!

I asked questions about Reiki a few weeks ago. After reading this thread though, I have some more. Is there a difference between the Reiki I attunements in which you do it online for free and the ones in which you have to pay? Also, some people online do it for free and charge a small fee for certification. Is it neccessary to have certification?

Exactly -what- is a Reiki attunement? I sorta know what Reiki is, I went to a class about it once ^_^.... and as for Reiki healing, does it have to be hands-on? Or can you do it over a distance?

Hello all,
I like to disagree with the last statement as quoted above, about being dependant on the teacher. I for one believe that there are certain things where in when the student is ready the teacher will appear....well from my personal experience, i believe in it more.
Well its not just the teacher who will decide. The teacher will put forth requirements like hands on experience..case log...oral exams..clearing doubts...and so on. Its the efforts of the students, are they comfortable with the new energy vibration levels, do they really want to become a teacher and take the higher responsibility or just want to be a practitioner after getting reiki II attunement, what is their motive in learning reiki...and so on.
As you can see, teacher can ask the student to do certain things before going for next level. So ultimately its upto the student to get that done.
I ask my students to wait for atleast 2months...so they can get used to the new knowledge...if i have to move away from where im right now..they are always free to choose a differnt master...but again..when they go a new master with a already learnt reiki knowlegde..the student is asked to demonstrate the techniques or asked to draw symbols..and the master will decide if the student will be able to handle new teachings..

Do what feels right to *you*. I can't stress that enough. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it. If it does feel right, go for it. Either way, it can't hurt you.
Usui Reiki does have a particular way of doing things. I consider some of them Reiki fundies! Some people make Reiki appear very complex when really it's the simplest thing in the world. (There are further things to learn, but if you know how to place your hands on your body, that's all you NEED to know). They make it look like a religion (which it isn't) -- it works regardless of what you believe about Reiki or when you get your attunements or how much or little you pay for them or who attunes you.
I do recommend waiting the traditional 21 days or so between attunements. I think it's a good idea to let your body adjust to the attunement, and if you're serious about teaching, I think it's nice to be able to tell your students what you experienced at each level. If someone wants to get the Level I, II, and III all at once, that sounds fine to me... I personally preferred to wait. When you're ready, you'll know.
I and others I know will offer attunements and classes basically for free or for a donation of whatever you can afford. So, right, prices of getting the Level III range everywhere from FREE to $10,000, average about $150. If it makes you feel better to pay that much, go for it, but I never would.
Trust yourself.

I agree with Earthy. I live in an inaccessible area generally and although I'm 19 I have not been able to get credit card yet that would fascilitate to donating or paying to anyone. I think I am in need of a lot of emotional healing that therapy cannot seem to balance out. From what I've read I would love to try Reiki as the next step but I dont know where else to go from here.
