It was twenty years ago -- Sept. 19, 1982 -- that Scott Fahlman typed
:-) in an online message, unwittingly supplying the often ungrammatical and
occasionally illiterate Internet culture with its most potent icon. The
smiley face, dreamed up while the IBM researcher was posting to an online
bulletin board at Carnegie Mellon University, has become shorthand for "Hey,
I'm only joking." It has spawned a slew of other, equally inane, "emoticons"
-- :-0 ;-) and you get the picture. www.wired.com

I heard this on the news this morning! They also said that he's never earned a nickle from it. He said that if he charged for it no one would've used it! :-)

That's so cool! I've never heard said story before this, but I think we should all chip in a nickle on the man's behalf...

Now thats a useful piece of information...I collect that sort of thing, because when you recount it to others, they tend to think you're cleverer than you really are :D mwahahaha!
