I think a friend and myself have struck on a new idea which some may find of interest. I`m sure others have done similar things but I personally have never read about it anywhere that I rmemeber so hopefully this is new for many here as well and hopefully some find it useful.

About 2 years ago I had the pleasure of being invited to the SE States to give a talk on minerals at a Pagan gathering. While there I met a wonderful indivdual who worked with Clay and made marvelous creations. We began talking and she told me how she mixed in various herbs to help energize the clay for specific goals. After much conversation we decided to stay in touch and try to expand on this idea. As said.. it has been 2 years and I now feel comfortable enough with the results to discuss them here (and elsewhere).

Over the last two years we have been experimenting with Clay by setting different things into it... much like a medicine bag for healing or like a witches bottle for protection. The idea behind this is that you mold into the clay any items (herbs and small stones is what we worked with but anything could be added depending on the situation) which you feel need to be included into it.

Several things have worked very good...

1) For sick people we included herbs and/or minerals into a small clay ball and let the clay harden. The sick person can carry it on them or if bed-ridden they can have it sitting beside the bed. One great aspect of this is to put the clay ball into the soil in a small potted plant or flowers. If the individual is in the hospital this allows one to fill the room with specific energies without drawing attention. When done with the right plant you get the energies of the clay and its nclusions as well as the plant all working to holistically heal the individual. This has really worked well during our experiments.

2) Most people are familiar with Buckland's concept of a witches bottle to help protect ones home. This is a natural and environmentally friendly alternative. I have also found it to be somewhat more subtle in its energies than a witches bottle. Instead of nails and such items I have used protective stones. Planted under a protective plant or within the root system of a tree in your yard and it makes for a great protective element for your environ without the harsh energies of broken glass and/or nails. Adding any personal body fluid to the ball does help with the energies but doesn't make these energies so "in your face" as what happens with traditional witches bottles.

3) Clay charms, Amultes or Talimens can also be made for any purpose needed.

Once you have molded the items you want into the clay it is up to you how fancy you want to make the clay object. For burying in soil it's best just to make a ball. If it is for an Amulet or other such things it can be anything you want it to be including a piece of jewelry. I have also played with drawing Runes into the clay before it dries and have had success with it. I would imagine you would get similar results with any form of writing or glyphs.

Clay itself has great healing energies and being as pouris as it is acts like a time-release capsule for what is included in it.

When used in healing or for Amulets or the like the person who is gifted with such an item should be instructed to either bury it or place it in a natural body of water when they are done with it. This way it desolves its remaining energies back into the land.

Artists who work with Clay can make Clay sculptures with selected objects and herbs placed within to help create energies for certain rooms or environs. These objects also make great gifts. If you are not gifted as a sculptor it is simple enough to place objects within clay and just make a small ball to place in a pot with a house plant or even just place the ball in a place where it wont be noticed too often.

As you can see.. the possibilities are endless.

One important thing is that one should not make too many of these. A lot of energy needs to be put into the making of such objects. The more you make the more likely the `mundane`factor will kick in.

The people we have given these to have had nothing but positive comments and the few I have made for myself I have had great results with. I encourage people to give them a try if they are drawn to the idea.

Oh my... now this topic gave me a wonderful idea! I've used clay for my runes before, so I know how to work with it magically. I'll try to see if I can create some kind of sculpture out of it, but will add some crystals to it and put it in my workplace when it's done.

Great! Thanks for that!

What type of clay are you using? Earth clays? And where can I get them? I would rather use the natural ones.

Right now I am using a natural clay found in Northern Ontario along river and creek banks. Its red and dries into a nice reddish color. I grew up in that area and still visit it often so collection for me isnt a problem. I've never worked with clay before this so how wide spread the natural stuff is and where it occurs I'm not sure of but everyone I have talked to about this tells me they have some form of clay close to where they live.

The person I started this project with used bought sculpter's clay and still uses it today with great results for herself. Again.. I dont know that much about clay so I dont know what is involved in manufacturing sculpting clay. One thing she has shared with me is that she uses water based clay and not oil based clay.

We have a gray natural clay here in North Carolina which has been used in a very similar fashion. I would have to verify some things but I believe that the native Indians here worked with it like that first that I am aware of in this area. It is an excellent procedure.

I did something similar to that years ago with store bought clay. although this was with regular sculptures and no ritual was used. although this was not done for healing but for protection. it did give some results.

Clay was probably one of the first things that people worked magic into. I've used it off and on since I was a kid. Sometimes I would use store bought clay but most of the time I used local clay either I or my brother got for me. You can use it to make poppets as well as things Wolfsong mentioned. If you wish to fire a piece you have to be very careful when adding things though. However, since most glazes are (at least were) made with crushed/powdered stone, the properties of the stone from which it was made will be part of your finished piece. :)
