Excellent info. In a Wiccan ritual class that I was taking, one of our assignments was to burn different types of incense and note how they made us feel. While the incenses have their own properties, they can sometimes mean different things to us individually and it's fine to use them for purposes other than what the texts say that they are for.

For instance, willow makes me feel wise. And myrtle just plain stinks

http://216.40.249.192/mysmilies/contrib/ruinkai/Wconfused.gif I wonder if my burning Frankincense had anything to do with... :)

Do you happen to know what Sandalwood or Lavendar are for?

Sandalwood: Protection, Purification and Spirituality

Lavender: Love, Peace, Healing, Relaxation

Sandalwood actually relaxes me more than lavender. My favorite incense is Nag Champa, which has a sandalwood base. For me, burning it is like getting a shot of medicine. I immediately feel peaceful, relaxed and cleansed and it's the one I use most for meditation and ritual.

I found that Dragonsblood was the most relaxing and yet uplifting incense for me. Sage is my favourite thing to burn, but is dangerous for pregnant women, I believe.

Scott Cunningham's "Incenses, Oils, and Brews" has some interesting combos.... 8O

And I've never burned Myrtle. ;)

Frankincense and myrhh burned together is another one of my favorites and also makes me feel relaxed and spiritually open......it could also have something to do with the association I have with Catholic Mass.....and copal works similarly for me.

Flaire, you can order Nag Champa from several sites on the web or I could send you some :)

Amber is for past life recall..... I like to take a small pinch and put it in a candle, for it is pretty sweet. I get my Frankincense and Myrhh in resin form at the health food stores.... I also like to use it in oil form just breathing it from the bottle.... The african shops seem to carry it also... as well as many other things that are oh so wonderful.... *

Sure! And I'll figure out if it might be cheaper for me to just send you some. It's very plentiful here!

I just got some lavender that was included as a free gift with a pentacle I ordered. It's very, very strong but very calming.

I use Lavender oil in a burner when I meditate, Sandalwood for rituals, Rosemary when I'm trying to learn something, Vanilla to connect me with myself when I'm stressed, and Neroli to lift my spirits when I'm down.

I usually use Sandalwood in my rituals.. I usually feel better when I use that. The other ones I have, I use for Tarot readings, calming myself down, mood, etc. :)

 I'm searching for something to post in Divination for Samhain and so far all I have run across are articles that I've posted in three other forums. Here are some recipes for Samhain Oil and Incenses and the page also includes rituals, correspondences and craft ideas:

Protection Oil

1 dram olive oil
1 dram Patchouli oil
1 tsp. broken pieces of Mandrake Root
1 dram Cinnamon Oil
3 heaping tsp. coarse sea salt ground very fine
1 dram Myrrh Oil

In a clean metal bowl, mix the olive oil, sea salt, and mandrake root. Mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Transfer the mixture to a clean sterilized jar. Using a dropper, add the essential oils. Swirl the essential oils into the base oil/salt/mandrake mixture, don't stir. Gently rotate the oil clockwise. Store the oil away from heat, light and moisture in an airtight glass bottle.

When I clean my house I burn insense to drive out negativity....any scent that I have handy.

But lately I've gotten to where I burn sweet grass ( in an abolne shell - sorry if I spelled abolne wrong!) I found that although the insence works.....the sweet grass works better!

I went to kmart, and gave some guy in the parkinglot a dollar to help stop violence. Anyhoo, he gave me a bag of 7 incense sticks in return. All the same. What smells are dark brown? It smells really good, and I've smelled it before, but I can't place it. The AC is making the smoke blow in my face. pretty swirly smoke. oooooh. Yep, I have a world of information at my fingertips and I'm staring at smoke swirls.

The brown could actually be any scent.
It just depends on what color the manufacturer mixed in with the oils.

Sweet Grass is traditionally used by Native Americans. It is a grass that is dried and usually sold in braids. You have to have those little charcoal things to burn it. The "witch store" that I go to sells it. But I also buy it at PowWows that we go to. You can probably order it on-line too.:)
