View Full Version : Libyan Desert Glass

I heard about this while watching a doc on Discovery channel. Either a comet or a meteor exploded over the desert by Egypt and Libya about 29 million years ago and turned the desert in that area into a big sheet of glass. King Tut had a piece of this desert glass in one of his necklaces. I was fascinated by this and had to see if any of this was available on the net and I found some.
So I have a lump of this desert glass in my collection of stones. I was wondering if anyone would have any idea if this could be used the same as quartz... I know it's just glass but it was formed in a great event to the planet. I just feel in awe when I hold it knowing that this chunk of glass that has been worn by the desert sands for the last 29 million years after it was formed by a giant fireball that turned the desert into yellowish green glass... it's just humbling. Now I'm just not sure what to do with it. :) Impulse buy I know:giggle:
Here's a pic similar to the piece I have.

It's beautiful stuff and becoming more ad more expensive. The theory you mentioned is correct and by far the most likely on how these formed but last I heard they were still looking for an impact crater for this event. (Its been close to a year since I researched this so they may well have found one by now)
It's energies are quite different from Quartz but it does have some energies which match up with Shocked Quartz. It very closely resembles the energies of Moldavite (the impact crater which formed moldavites was just found a few years ago in Germany) as without a doubt the 2 types of Tektites formed in much the same way... in that regards its energies are similar to all forms of Tektites with just subtle differences.
I kinda cringe at your mention of "it's only glass" cause as you mentioned the natural forces which went into creating these was amazing. Only glass is what I would refer to as manmade glass. Naturally formed glass, of any type, is, in my opinion, not just "only glass". I think you feel the same in this regard though
I'm not sure how much I touched on energies in the other two threads so I will touch on them breifly here. Desert Glass as well as Moldavite/tektites are great for initiating change and are considered an agent of change for jobs, relationships, lifestyles.. you name it. They link us with the power of the universe and in this way can be of help in finding solutions to problems and questions thought to be unsolvable. It's a stone of communication and cooperation. For chakra work it helps open both the crown and third eye and also helps connect the two... they help to manifest life changes.
Desert Glass has a few unique energies along with the above. It helps one connect to the angelic realms as well as any higher sourses whereas moldavite helps us connect with earth and nature dieties. Desert glass also helps us dream and think outside of the box. It was shaped by the sun and the winds of the desert and as such links us to these energies. For this reason Desert glass is somewhat more gentle in its energies than moldavite. Whereas moldavite brings change rapidly desert glass sometimes works more slowly but with the same results. Desert glass helps people who are emotionally unstable and helps them learn how to live a more balanced life. It does harmonize very well with Quartz.
I know I have written on them before in this forum... let me see if I can find the threads... both threads refer to it several times in different posts.

I would think that it would have the similar properties as obsidian. Since that is also a glass.

Thanks for the responses :) Nah I guess I misspoke when i said it's just glass... I didn't mean it being glass like a beer bottle type glass but that it was not the same as quartz. It feels more delicate than the quartz stones I have in my collection, which makes me a bit apprehensive about breaking it. I've never used it for anything before... I just like holding it so I must like the energy it emits :) I've actually pondered making a necklace out of it to wear when I'm meditating.

It's not that delicate at all and used in jewelery quite often.. just like moldavite. Breaking it shouldnt be an issue unless you hit it with a hammer or something similar.

It has a part that branches off to the left that isn't as thick as the base, that's what I'm worried about breaking off, the rest seems really solid. I'll post a pick after I get some batteries for my camera :)

well obsidian is a volcanic glass while the others are glass created by meteorites.
here's a link to what the different obsidians have:
