Hi

Last night someone gave me a seed to a Californian Redwood
Tree and told me to plant it.
He said that it should grow in England as long as it
has plenty of light.
I wondered if anyone knew when and how I should plant it
and whether it needs any special soil conditions.
It is very frosty here in England at the moment.

thanks
Wildwood

You should plant the seed in Spring, early Summer...

Tree seeds need to germinate through the winter months before transforming into seedlings. Trees grow on a time table of their own, so do not be discouraged if it takes a Spring or two to see results.

Make sure the ground where you plant is not soaking wet all of the time. Trees need moisture, but too much will not allow them to germinate properly (DO NOT OVER WATER).

Until you are ready to plant, seal the seed up in a plastic bag so it will stay dry, and tuck it away in your refrigerator to keep it cold....

This is about all I can tell you, except trees are very tolerant to nearly all soils, so you should not have a problem with that.

You're lucky to have been able to get it into England - I wanted to bring one back from Sequoia national park (they sell the seedlings in tubes), but Australian customs is really militant about bringing in plants.
