How do you work towards a deity?

I've seen and heard it mentioned many times that somone is working towards a deity. Being a newbie still I'm not sure what it means. Could someone explain it to me?

I think that if you're interested in a particular Deity, you read all you can about them. You get beyond--Aphrodite is the Greek Goddess of Love, Lugh is the Celtic Sun God, etc. You read their myths, learn any other names they were called by, find out how they were worshipped during ancient times, discover the things that are considered sacred to them. Perhaps you meditate upon them, you begin to honor them on their traditional holy days, you write poetry about them. In other words you get to know them in depth. You may discover things about Deity and yourself that are quite surprising, and some of it will probably be very personal. When you develop an intimate relationship with a Goddess/God, it is quite literally amazing.
