View Full Version : Grandfather in ICU

I know I've been on energy requests and helping hands a lot lately, but it seems nothing is going right this year. I got a phone call today from my sister, my grandfather is in the ICU in Temple, TX. I'm in San Antonio and I can't get off work early enough to go see him today or even early tomorrow morning, but my father and sister are there with him. He's having trouble swallowing, hasn't eaten in a week. He also is having some very serious issues with his lungs. Last time he was in the hospital, it was due to severe pneumonia and now... who knows?
Things are not looking good, it seems as if he's in the hospital every other month or so for some reason or another and each time it's something worse. We've had five deaths in our family this year, and I really don't know what to do. They say he's doing better and may be transferred to a regular room sometime this evening or tomorrow morning. Just any energy for our family and my grandfather to be feeling better again soon would be much appreciated. :hugz:

:hugz: Thanks, guys. Here's a bit of an update.
I'm a bit angry. I called my mother to speak with her about what's going on and she said that in the ICU they're planning on putting him on a feeding tube if he hasnt been able to hold anything down by Monday. He hadn't eaten in a week since THURSDAY and they're going to wait four more days? FFS! I would have put him on a feeding tube immediately!
She says he's not as sick as the last time he was in the hospital, but he's still in the ICU, from what I've heard... and yesterday they thought they'd have him out last night or early this morning. Not looking terribly great.

I talked to my grandma today, she came in for my brother's birthday party (which was very fun, he's 5 as of tomorrow!) Grandpa got transferred to a regular room and no one told me, as of the night I posted the thread. Still in the hospital, my aunt is with him. We're all hoping he's doing okay, but it looks like he's getting better. :)
Will post if anything develops (for better or for worse).

Still in the hospital. I talked to my mom right after she got off the phone with my grandmother, she said they're going to keep him in the hospital for another 4-6 weeks and, in his opinion, he's not feeling any better. :(
Please keep our family in your thoughts still. He may be out of the ICU but this thing is simply not over yet.

I really empathize with this. My own grandfather has been in and out of the hospital for a few months now. He's back at home, but still not doing very well at all. They think he might go at any time; he's at home because he wants to die comfortably. Unfortunately, I don't live all that close, so I haven't been to see him yet. I'm hoping to get a day off next week to do so... because it might be the last, which is really depressing to think about...
So anyway, as one who knows exactly how you feel, I'm sending lots of energy your way. No matter what the outcome, I'm sending energy for strength and comfort of everyone involved. :hugz:

:hugz: Thanks, everyone. My grandmother is doing very well with everything, thanking the powers that be that they signed up for AirLife Insurance right in time, it seems. (Where they come pick you up and fly you to a hospital.) They live in a very small town and are a bit far away from everything, so it's a good thing to have for them. Definitely came in handy this time.
She unfortunately can't get off work and afford the gas to go see him very often, as he's in a specialty hospital in another town. She speaks to him every so often when he's up for it and all of that. No bad news, so I'm thinking he's doing okay.
I'll definitely keep you guys posted. Things are okay with the rest of the family, though we do have some family in Houston who are having issues due to the hurricane, so stuff is not going well this month so far, it seems.

Update for everyone. My grandfather has taken a turn for the worst as in the ICU on life support right now. I took off early from work and will be heading out to Temple momentarily. Please have our family in your thoughts, we're having a bit of a rough time. :(

Thanks, guys. Well after the past day or so of hanging out in hospital waiting rooms, I've finally come home to report.
The verdict is that my grandfather has what is termed "necrotizing pneumonia", which is a pnemonia infection like any other except that it has the unique factor that, in the wake of the infection, the lungs cannot truly and fully recoup and, as a result, pretty much an entire lung has been rendered useless. He is on a ventilator. The doctor was very reasonable, practical, and honest in saying that the chances of him even making it through the infection, much less ever coming home, are more than relatively low, they're pretty much rock bottom. We all sat down and discussed it together and decided that if he doesn't make any improvements in the next few days, we will take him off the ventilator and allow nature to take its course as comfortably as possible. Thank you, everyone, for your support and strength through this. All I can hope for now is peace and comfort.
I remember once I was talking to a few friends about my grandfather and his illness, starting with a gastric ulcer gone to an abcess which left us thinking he would never eat again save a feeding tube. The next Thanksgiving he was eating with us at the table, guzzling down ham and seet potatoes. At this point I said that after the nuclear fallout it would be cockroaches, Mick Jagger, and grandpa... but it looks like Mick Jagger may not have all of that company after all.
Thank you, everyone, for your support in all of this. Please keep us in your thoughts. I will, of course, update when I find out what's what for sure.

Another update.
Gramps has gotten a little bit better, so discussion about pulling the plug, so to speak, has been dropped for the time being. We have a bit more time with him, at least. :)

:hugz: to you! My husband had necrotizing pneumonia last year! He was in the hospital for a week and had a picc line for antibiotics for another 2 weeks!
They said it was most likely caused by him aspirating. (inhaling fluid) He has a abcess on his right lung which will always be there but the infection is now gone.
I hope your grandfather continues to improve. Energy sent to him,as well as your family.

:hugz: Well, folks! Grandpa is doing MUCH better! They're even talking about him going home!
Despite all of the happy rejoicing that he's getting better, there's still the dark fear that something may happen. I should just be happy and look forward to the possibility of yet ANOTHER year spent with Grandpa grumping about and fussing because we're being too loud during yet another Thanksgiving Cowboy's game. :D
