Hi.

I'll stop asking dopey questions eventually, I promise.

About runes...what's a good book or source to browse to get aquainted with them? And purchasing runic tablets/stones...are there differences between certain ones?

Try this link for a start. And don't worry about asking dopey questions. Try doing a search when you have one, if you can't find the answer readily, then ask away. Someone here is sure to have an answer. :D

I'll try to field this one... the answer to this question lies in Rune Lore & Tradition... Lore & Tradition says that Runes should be made from the wood of certain trees (any fruit-bearing trees, & some others, such as birch, oak, rowan, etc)... there's a process (as laid out in the Edda) of carving the Runes, 'singing' their names as you carve them, & staining (blooding, if one's not too squeamish, or at least using red paint or ink)... as to the clay/ceramic sets, or painted pebbles, you can read with them (done it myself a few times, in a pinch)... kinda depends on whether you want to just read Runes, maybe kinda check 'em out, see if their for you... or whether you want to become a more serious student of the Runes...

PS You can also cast 9 twigs or straws, & look for the Runic shapes in them... it's the oldest known method of Runecasting, & the simplest...

And also take a look at the thread at the top of this forum that says STUCK: All About Runes. It will show you all of the threads we've done on each of the runes. Some of the later threads haven't been completed yet but the basic information is there.
