Does anyone know what kind of clothes I could use to help a friend make a makeshift costume for the Ren Fest? She wants a costume, but has nothing even remotely, renaissancey. All I have, as far as I know, is a poofy peasanty looking shirt. I can't go shopping because I need to save money. We do have a goodwill down here, but that's about it, in the cheapie clothes dept.

You could try looking at the local thrift store for a broomstick skirt, or two of them. You can wear one alone, or double them up, and tuch the side of the top one up under the waistline, or pin it up under to show off the bottom one.
The puffy shirt works. You can also look for a puffy type shirt that is off the shoulders. Lok for a couple of shawls. You can put one around your shoulders. You can also tie one around your waist. Yards of fabric are good for this too. Just sew straight seems on the edges of it.
This of course would give you more of a gypsy peasant type look. Check out ebay for deals on ren costumes. they always have some. Not sure what you can actually spend. But last time I was there, I saw a nice dress (middleclass) for about $60.
Hope some of this helps. BTW what part of NC are you in?

actually I found a seafoam green one at goodwill for $5. HECK YEAH!! It was a bit see-thru, but fixable. Too bad we (my two friends and I) didn't get to wear the costumes, it was blazing hot. And now, it's freezing. Figures. I was the only weekend we could all go together. Grr. Oh, and we couldn't even stay for the jousting tournament. One of my friends was about to "die" from the heat. (I was born in New Orleans and have lived in Miami, I love it, to an extent), That and this big guy sitting very close to me (lots of people, not enough benches), in full black 'pirate' costume was picking his nose! EEEW. He was like 30-40 too. I was too busy staring at him, thinking "what the...?" to watch the tournament, and it was sunny as all, so we went off to look at shops. One of the minstrels (?) on the way out was cute. :D oh and some chick had elf ears. I wish. Blast my latex allergy.
