I have heard that when a planet appears in your natal chart in its "home" sign, it is exalted. Can anyone elaborate? Mine are:

Venus in Libra
Jupiter in Sag
Saturn in Cap

Gwion, there are signs of rulership and also signs of exhaltation, they are not necessarily the same. Being in Sidereal research for so many years, I have to take exception with the traditional positions of planetary exaltations. An example of this is Aquaruis. (birthdays from Feb. 13 through March 16) Although most exhaltation lists do not mention the Moon being exhalted in that sign, it definitely is. As the Sun is in its fall and debiliation in Aquarius, the Moon more than makes up for any solar defeciency. Of course, I am speaking of the Sidereal Zodiac. Generally, it can be surmized, that any planet or luminary in its sign of rulership is in its fall and or debilitation in the opposite sign, such as Leo and Aquarius. However, signs thar are adjacent to the opposite sign of rulership will allow an exhaltation. In the Sun's case it is exhalted in Capricorn, and Pisces. Traditionally, they place the Sun's exhaltation is Sidereal Aries, but what planetary position in this firey sign may not over activated? Also, any sign that is adjacent to a planet or luminary's rulership has a debilitating effect. This would include Cancer and Virgo, when considering the Sun.

Now, this is not a negative thing. It is just that, as in Aquarius' case, that the meaning of the Sun, (leadership, magnanimity, stoic calmness amidst problems, self reliance that inspires others to follow, and other similiar attributes), do not find free expression a sign of its debiltiation or fall.

In your case where you mention Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn, these you have listed are positions of rulership. But these planets also have signs of exhaltation. They are as follows (IMHO): Venus, Pisces and Taurus, Jupiter; Taurus, and Cancer, Saturn; Leo and Gemini. Traditionally they place exhaltations in other signs than those listed here. But one must keep in mind that the popular Tropical Zodiac has changed almost 25 degrees off from it original sign to stellar positionings, at the time of the formulation of exhaltations and rulerships. the common error in modern astrology is that 0* Aries is not the vernal equinox, but rather 90* behind the Solar Apex.
