View Full Version : The Pow Wow

The Pow Wow went well.
I don't remember how many dancers we had but they were from as far away as Calfornia. One of the drums was from Milwaukee. And we had one drum from Tennessee. The host drum was from Georgia.
There were more spectators at this Pow Wow than I remember seeing here in quite a while.
All the vendors I spoke with said they were doing really well and that is always a good sign!
For the past few years it seems we really didn't have very many dancers but this year....during the fancy dance....there wasn't a bare spot in the circle.
The jingle dress dancers this year were really good. That is my favorite women's competition. The dresses are fashioned after a vision a woman had. There are cones all over the dresses (sometimes made from Skoal lids) and the ladies must make them "jingle" in time with the drum.
I also like the women's fancy shawl dance but there weren't many of them this year.
The story teller was very good and the flute player too.
The Eagle Dancer was training his son to dance as well. The little boy was probably about 4 and for the most part was a mirror image of his Dad.
I didn't get to see the hoop dancer much but my oldest said he was good.
There were 2 TV stations there and 1 radio station.
Hubby always works hard but with more dancers than normal he had to put forth an extra effort to watch the circle and make sure that things went smoothly and we wish to thank those of you who sent him a little extra energy over the week-end.
My youngest has decided that he wants to compete next year. He danced in all the intertribals to show me how serious he was so Mama-in-law and I will now have to put our heads together to come up with his ragila (check me on spelling)
Overall things went better that normal....except for the cold I caught.

I'm so glad it went well! I haven't been to one for 4 or 5 years; now I'm going to have to check the event calendars around here and see if one's coming up...
And I'd love to see pics of your youngest in his regalia when you get it finished....
Say WC, my best freind and I once found imprinted (stamped?) cones at a rendevous; they are patterned with flowers all over them. The seller only had 20 of them; we each got 10 and have been looking for more ever since. Have you seen anything like that?

They have a partners dance during the intertribals. It's called a two-step, but for those who don't know it's nothing like the western two-step, and traditionally the women ask the men.
Hubby and I don't dance cause he's on his feet during the whole Pow Wow. (Sometimes I dance during intertribals.) He doesn't sit down till each session is over. Here, because it's small they only run 3 sessions. The first is Sat., the grand entry starts at 1 and they run till 4:30. The second session start at 6 and runs till 10. The 3rd and final session starts at 1 on Sunday and runs till all the competitions are finished. Then it's awards time.
Frybread with honey! That's good. But never eat frybread alone as it's very bland. The big seller at the Pow Wow's is the Indian Taco. It's your regular taco fixin's on frybread. And buffalo burgers are also a big seller, along with roasted corn. Greta frybread is basically flour and water mixed up and fried....traditional food.
Earthcat I know there are vendors who sell cones. I used to make breastplates and such. I purchased my supplies at that time from GreyOwl located in New York. I'm sure they're still in operation, but I haven't ordered anything in quite a while. I'll see if I can find anyone for ya.
I did have a picture made of the 5 of us with all intentions of posting it here. Now it'll just be a question of how long it takes me to get my film developed. I'm real bad, like waiting months before getting anything developed. I still don't have BR kindergarten graduation pictures developed.

Thanks, WC.
And I'm looking forward to the pics... (I'm the same way about developing film. I've got undeveloped pics from 5 years ago! We recently got a digital; and I'm still procrastinating on getting my pics up here!)

No, we don't stray that far away from home.
We do have friends that "follow the PowWow trail" as they say. I'd love the go to a Stomp Dance which is the traditional dance of the Creek people.
Creek women dance with turtle shell shakers. The shakers are straped onto the ankles and the women must keep time with the drum.

I'm glad everything worked out well! Glad to hear that your son wants to start dancing. Dancing, no matter what style, is always a good idea!
