I have made God/Goddess sculpture pieces using Sculpey clay. Its easy to work with and when you like the piece you have made then you bake it in the oven to harden it

You could try Fimo too.............

One thing that is good with any polymer clay (Sculpty and Fimo) is that it's very forgiving. As long as it isn't baked, it will remain workable. When you start to use it, kneed it till it becomes soft. If you set it down for awhile then come back to it and just kneed it till it becomes soft once again. I work with Sculpty for the mostly because it's the only brand I can find in this little town. One thing I will warn you of...sometimes the dyes in the clay will stain. Red is insidious for this, so you'll want use something to protect any surface that you don't want to take a chance of becoming stained. The back of the packages will suggest the tempuature and times for baking depending on the size of the piece. That's pretty much all I know about the polymer clays.

Good luck and have fun. :)

other mediums you might think of are:
wood, paper mache, and just about any household item.

Yes, beware of the red Sculpey............I suffered red hands from one project!! :)

I wonder if modeling clay would work. I don't think it ever hardens up depending on the type of clay. But it would be a good medium to practice with before the final project if you're going to be using something like clay or paper maché.

Modeling clay would be fine, I dont believe it hardens either. But I like Sculpey/Fimo better, because at least that way, when I get the result I wanted I can just bake it and not have to try to recreate it again!!;) Most of the time when I make something by hand like that, if I try to re-create it just the same..........it never happens:ahhhh:

Below is a picture of a goddess sculpture I made out of a homemade salt dough clay. It's very simple to make. If you're interested, let me know and I will give you the recipe.:)
