The answer to all three is "Yes"...

You can write with Runes; each one corresponds with a phonetic sound (not necessarily a letter... examples: Fehu + 'f', Ingaz = 'ng')... each one is a magical symbol, & each one conveys it's particular divinatory &/or magical meanings...

Rick, I 've always had a question about this.....

When I write my name in runes, am I creating a bind rune? Is this showing the script for my life?

:) Runes were an alphabet (or two) also, and probably were an alphabet before they became a divination tool.

Freyja, writing your name in runes would be another way of writing your name. . . just like writing your name in Cyrillic (Russian). It's another way of saying, on paper, "This is who I am." Runes being what they are, you probably could divine some meaning from the patterns that your name forms. . .

Runes were used as magical symbols possibly as early as 200 BCE (some argue as early as 1000 BCE, but I believe that's stretching it a bit, although proto-Runic symbols were used as early as 3500 BCE). The oldest known manuscript containing Runes dates to around 400 CE. Runes didn't begin to be heavily used for writing until the Viking Era, around 800 CE. Runes were probably always connected with sounds, since Galdr ('singing the Runes') is an integral part of Rune magic... (sources: Futhark by Edred Thorsson-Samuel Weiser, Inc. 1984, & Helrunar by Jan Fries-Mandrake of Oxford 1997)

Technically, no, unless you bind the Runes... writing your name in Runes makes a Runic formula (OK, it sounds like I'm splitting hairs, but I can't think of a better way of explaining it... it took me several years to begin to wrap my mind around the concept, & there are still details of it that I only vaguely grok)...

Hmm... I'd say it shows tendencies (kinda like the tendencies of being Scorpio or Gemini)...

...and you'd only use one Nauthiz... in writing with Runes, if you're translating a 'double letter', you generally drop one... reckon our Teutonic Ancestors were either practical that way, or lazy... 8O

Thanks, Rick. I've been wondering about that for quite some time and kept forgetting to ask.

I have used Runes to write in code before. Works fine.

Ok so I was thinking, "Sure if they're made of pencil lead or crayons or something!"

*dodges smack*

;) Hey, I'm just joking with ya'll!:crylaugh:

Freyja actually did my first rune reading a few months back. I saw my first runes not long after that. Here's an update Freyja - no property bought - as of yet. Steady working toward it though.;)
