As you delve into astrology, you will discover that human attributes follow the natural rhythms of nature. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the way characteristics of the three Qualities are derived.

Each sign of the Zodiac is assigned to one of three Qualities--categories professional astrologers call the "quadruplicies." There are four signs to each category: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable.

Each Quality has a special role to play in relationship to their placement within the four seasons. If this is difficult to understand (and if you find yourself rereading what you just read)-- relax--you will "get it" when you check out your sign and compare your profile to other signs within your Quality group.

If you know your rising sign (also called the ascendent) check that description out too, for it will complete your profile accurately.

To understand your Quality, you must first know what Element you are. If you don't know if you are an Earth, Air, Fire or Water sign, check out The Elements posts.

Once you've read about your Element, come back here to check out more information about your personality and that of people you know. Find out if you are a real Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable sign.

Cardinal Signs: If you are a Cardinal sign your job is to initiate the season. You are the leader which brings forth that season. Cardinal signs are pioneering and enterprising. Aries (spring), Cancer (summer), Libra (autumn), and Capricorn (winter), are the Cardinal signs.

Fixed Signs: If you are a Fixed sign, you are the second month in that season and it is your job to maintain that season. Fixed signs concentrate energy and solidify ideas. Taurus (spring), Leo (summer), Scorpio (autumn), and Aquarius (winter), are the Fixed signs.

Mutable Signs: If you are a Mutable sign, your sign is the third (and final) month within each season. The role for these signs is to prepare for the transition to the next season and their traits are communication, flexibility, and destruction. Mutable signs are Gemini (late spring), Virgo (late summer), Sagittarius (late autumn) and Pisces (late winter).

Thank you Litha, we were getting a little concerned about not hearing from you for a while. Perhaps it should also be stated that there is much more to the triads than associations with the seasons. Perhaps we (the Astrology forum moderators) can cover more of this issue at a later time.

Based on my entire chart, Cardinal comes out on top. Got a good bit of Aries and Libra in me! :D Leo comes in 3rd though.

If you want the easy way, go to www.astro.com and get yourself a free natal chart. It'll ask you for all your birth info and spit you out a chart. I'm pretty sure the plain old chart comes with a little table that says C, F, & M on the columns for cardinal, fixed, and mutable. It'll tell you how many of each you have. :D

Otherwise, Cardinal is Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Fixed is Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Mutable is Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. :)

are as follows

Cardinal
Aries CArdinal Fire
Cancer Cardinal Water
Libra CArdinal Air
Capricorn Cardinal Earth

Fixed
Taurus Fixed Earth
Leo Fixed Fire
Scorpio Fixed Water
Aquarius Fixed Air

Mutable
Gemini Mutable Air
Virgo Mutable Air
Sagittarius Mutable Fire
Pisces Mutable Water

The "Qualities " also are manifested in houses...... so you can have a fixed planet in cardinal house ...... and it can sometimes BEHAVE like a Cardinal if aspects support it......
Cardinal Signs are the intiators and movers and shakers but sometime lack follow through
Fixed Signs are very stable and reliable but can be immovable (The ROYAL STARS .... the original Guardians of the WatchTowers are in Fixed Signs )
Mutable Signs Are flexible and adaptable .... but can be very unstable und unreliable.....

LOL I should have read this thread before I took my exam LOL

IM takeing a corespondence course from stratford university in astrology/parapsychology ..

knowing which deccanate of your sign you are in helps to from what I have been reading...

each sign is devided into 3 rooms and they are approximately 10 days each, and each of the three deccants are rulled by a planet and this planet is called your sub ruler..

example, my sign taurus is ruled by venus
but i was born on the 20th so that puts me in the 3rd deccanate which makes Saturn my sign's "sub ruler" saturn works with Venus to rule the sign.....

it gets deep LOL astrology can be very indepth as im finding out in my studies

Sakoian and Acker have the best book I've seen on Decanates and Duads called The Zodica Within Each Sign. It was published in 1975 and it's a good addition to your personal library if you can find it in print.
