Has anybody carved pumpkins yet?
BR went to the pumpkin patch yesterday with his class.
So we carved it last night.
Course, many more will be carved before the month is out!
LOVE PUMPKIN CARVING TIME!

having a fight with pumpkin guts is fun too and if you save the seeds you can bake them with a little salt. :)

We'll proabably wait until the week before Halloween to carve them- or else our rampant family of squirrels will get to them. :)

And yum- I love toasted pumpkin seeds- it's the best part of carving pumpkins.

Yummmmmmmmmm...pumpkin seeds! John and I went to the orchards the day I got back to RI, and we bought a 45 lb pumpkin. The thing is HUGE! Can't wait to carve it :) We usually wait as long as we can, so that it doesn't rot early. But...we'll be carving it probably this weekend. Just because I can't wait :) Some pumpkin facts for you. Oddly, smaller pumpkins tend to have more seeds than Large pumpkins. There are "Female" pumpkins, and Male Pumpkins. I've heard that the ones with a large brownish spot (an indent of types) on the bottom, is a female pumpkin, but someone could have been putting me on :) The small "sugar" pumpkin is the one which makes the best pies, as it is softer, and sweeter than the large "Jackolantern" type pumpkins. Both can be used for either purpose, however, A Jackolantern type pumpkin used for pies may result in a stringy pie, where as a sugar pumpkin may be difficult to Carve for a Jackolantern.

Pumpkins can be harvested early, and sold even AFTER October 31st. To preserve pumpkins after harvesting, most people reccomend that you store them in a cool, dry place, preferably not on concrete, or any material that holds moisture well, and dipping them into a clorox solution of 1 part clorine bleach, to 9 parts water. Also, storing them in open sunlite can cause spots to appear on the pumpkin skin.

The name Pumpkin supposedly comes from the Greek word "Pepon" for "Large Melon."

Well, I have this problem... And apparently I'm the only one...
I do love Jack-o-lanterns, and carving is fun, but....
um.... well.... I just love the pumpkins themselves!
I hate to cut into them and mar the perfection of a large, round, perfect orange-orange pumpkin. I've had one on my porch for a couple of weeks;
I keep looking at it and thinking that I need to figure out how I'm going to carve it, but....
**le sigh....**

*giggles* I just remembered what happened when me and my mom went to the store to get our pumpkins.

they had them all piled up in these big container things that come up to my chest. well i was trying to dig through and find the perfect ones and i guess i didn't balance one right or something because when i stepped away from the container one fell out and bounced across the floor. 8O
I didn't know pumpkins could bounce.

Hi guys,
last year I decided to try something different with my pumpkins. I was tired of carving faces and other designs so I made myself a little pumpkin village. The houses turned out so nice and everyone that came by was really impressed. I'll have to scan the pictures that I took and post them here. I tend to go a little overboard on halloween with my displays, but heck it's drawn more people to my neighbourhood every year. I actually have to buy more than one bag of candy now. That reminds me, I have to start looking for my pumpkins :)

Chyssi, a few years back we had a family living next door to us who had put out a string of carved pumpkins along our back fence. It was during a time when I was "allowed" to feed my own family of squirrels (we won't go into the heated battle that ensued a few years later).

A few days had gone by without my "babies" coming up for food and I was getting concerned, especially with winter coming. I was looking out my window and swore I saw the pumpkins moving. I thought I was losing my mind until this little sqirrel head came popping out of the top with a mouthful of pumpkin innards! It was too cute and needless to say, I laughed my a$$ off!!!!

Now, I've posted this in the arts & crafts forum, but I want eveyone to get into the Halloween spirit: Eggboy's Halloween (http://eggboy.freeservers.com/Halloween/enter.htm) It's my Halloween site--great for the kids--and just yesterday, I received the "Cool & Spooky Site" award!!! Make sure to have your sound up and enjoy! ;)

I've got two pumpkins on the porch sweating it out. Wondering
when I am going to cut off their heads, pull out their guts, and
carve chunks out of them, and then display their corpses with
fire in their bellies and their heads back on in a mockery of life!

You don't have to cut them!!

If you really want to decorate them, but don't want to cut them. . . you can paint them! I know there are kits out there, and you can just do it on your own probably, too! Or you could get out the ol' glue and scissors, and paper and ribbons and glitter. . . go insane on the darn things! Think paper-bag puppets, or something. Decorate to your heart's content!

Me. . . being a tactile person (according to mom :D ) I love the slimey feel of pumpkin guts. And I'm finally beginning to appreciate them cooked, too! :D

Puma, they also have those new wooden cutout things so that you can put them into the pumpkin and make them into characters. They are so cute!!!:)

I was at Michael's recently and saw the coolest thing for pumpkins! It's like "Lite-Brite" for a pumpkin!!!

They give you these clear peg-like things that are different colors and when you put the light into the pumpkin, the pegs shine and make it look like the pumpkin is all lit up!!

I thought it was pretty neat. ;)

PS. They also had it at CVS too!!!

I always think of Lite-Brite as a Christmas-y type of thing because the commercials used to come out like crazy at holiday time. Now that they've got them for pumpkins, it's like putting my two favorite times of year together!!! :) :) :) :) :)
