I have a set of runes but have not even used them yet. :(
What is the best way to get to know them and to be able to read them?

Sleep with them. Put them in their cloth/bag and place them under your pillow. Just be warned, you may have very interesting dreams, good, but interesting.
Meditate on each symbols meaning individually.
Do readings. The more you read, the more familiar you will become.

There is a thread at the top of this page about runes. This may help. Here's the link to the thread.

Sleeping with them is recommended by Freya Aswynn, author of Northern Mysteries and Magick. She recommends that you sleep with them for nine days and nine nights, and yes, I did this.
Another way to familiarize yourself with the runes would be to make a few sets by either carving them into wood or clay or painting them on stones, etc. As you carve or paint, chant the name of the rune and reflect upon its meaning. This worked very well for me as I am the type of learner who does better if I write things down.
Some also believe in "ingesting" the runes, by drawing one in a glass of water and drinking the water or making rune cookies or cakes and eating one per day, again reflecting on the meaning of the rune.

In addition to what I suggested above, you could also simply write them on pieces of paper........and do some readings for yourself.

Does the paper work? I was thinking about doing that but thought I was crazy. Maybe it was just the runes speaking to me letting me know that I can start learning before I actually have a set!

What exactly are runes and how do you use them? Remember, I'm fairly new to this...
