View Full Version : Question about Quartz and Crystal Gazing.

In the Navajo Reservation, and surrounding cities, a lot of the Hastaali or Medicine Men gaze into a Quartz crystal to tell us what is wrong with us. (With extreme accuracy.) I am taking an apprenticeship soon, and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the relationship spirit world and Quartz? I have read on http://www.shimmerlings.com/gemstones/quartz.htm that it is capable of such things, and seen it first hand from relatives. Does anyone know how exactly the Medicine Man preforms this? I would love to know how exactly to do this. ("This"meaning divining people's problems wiht accuracy, and seeing the spirit world looking at someone through the Quartz.)
Also, I hear that you can draw negative energy from people, and store it in the Quartz, then cleanse it after. How exactly do you extract negative energy from someone, and how do you know where to extract it from?
I do a lot of work with the spirit world and Shamanism, but wanted to broaden my skills besides the techniques from my culture. Thanks in advance for helping me with my questions.

Mnay cultures world wide word with quartz on different levels and many of them work with quartz to help link them to the spirit world. It is done in just about as many different ways as there are different cultures...
In regards to specific native american cultures and yours in specifc... I leave that up to your elders and/or medicine man/woman to determine when you are ready to recieve this knowledge. There is one thing that is a constant within the native american community and that is wisdom most often comes from the tribal elders and they share it as needed amoungst the community.
I can and will generalize on this farther when I get home... especially in regards to other traditions around the world... one thing not many know is that there is a close link between the crystal works of medicine ppl in sounth america and native north americans...
again.. more when I get home sometime at the start of feb.. right now I am limited to online time by going to a net cafe.... cant seem to plug in over here anywhwere else.

Thank you for your reply. The Medicine Man would teach me, but I am two states away, and I don't have the time or money to get tp Gallup, NM. :( As for learning traditional ways to divine or contact the spirit world through the stone, I would love to learn any method at all. There are many paths up the mountian, but at the top, the view is the same, you know? I already know a few ways to divine with the spirits, but I can't heal with them yet. I am hoping this will bring me one step closer with your next reply. :)

Then perhaps i can give you some info while Wolfsong is busy.
Crystal balls: these are used to help you with your sixth sense. it is mainly a tool to help you. the sphere itself does not hold any images or thoughts per say. it helps with visions in your mind to manifest. what you see in your mind is usually thoughts , symbols or even words.also you do not need to get a quartz crystal ball . you can use other minerials. whatever you feel comfortable with
Hag stones:also known as holed or holy stones. these stones have a natural hole in them. they are usually used to see ghosts and faeries.
lithomancy: a form of casting stones.
margaritomancy: using pearls as divination. mainly to see if someone is guilty of a crime.
pessomancy:divination using pebbles.
rune stones: stones which have one rune letter/symbol imprinted somewhat on each stone. most common is the elder futhark . these are cast in the same way you cast regular runes.
tarot stones: these are usually one stone that represents one of the major arcana. an example is taken from Scott Cunningham's "stone tarot" in his book on gems and minerials. an agate is used to represent The Fool. A quartz is used to represent The Magician. etc. all the way up to The World.

I charge mine in the sun for one day. I then hold it at night and ask it to direct my dreams. Your dreams will be very interesting. After a few weeks, I asked the stone to speak to me. In about thirty seconds I felt this golden energy come about me and angels spoke to me. Ask the angels to guide you from then on

I honestly think that crystal balls were originally developed as an early form of magnifying glass to help those with failing eyesight to read small text, in an era before the more usual type of magnifying glasses and reading glasses were developed; and that their association with being able to foresee the future or whatever was just a superstition attached to them by the illiterate (who had no need for reading aids and were less educated and more inclined to suppose superstitious purposes for such things).
I myself have used crystal balls for this very purpose when I couldn't make out very small text (even with my glasses on) and it works quite well as a magnifying glass - far better than it does for contacting "the other side".

although the greek philosopher Aristophanes (c. 448 BC-380 BC) knew that glass could be made as a magnifyer. However the earliest forms of magnifying glasses was first developed by Seneca (4 BC–AD 65) a Roman tragedian by using a glass globe of water to read.
then around 150 AD Ptolemy discovered the basic rules of light diffraction and wrote on it. then around 1065 or so A.D. presbyopic monks used segments of glass spheres that could be laid against reading material to magnify the letters . as you can see glass was used and not crystal.
it is interesting that the earliest known crystal spheres were made of beryllium aluminum silicate aka beryl. it is transparent but not crystal clear (no pun intended) . in fact the so called crystal ball of Dr.John Dee was in fact was made of beryl and not crystal.
so I think it would be highly unlikely crystal spheres were developed this way.

Wow! Thanks for all the awesome replies! :)
Usually the Medicine Men/Shamans use a reguar quartz, not a crystal ball. I am not sure if that affects anything though. I did find a peson here in Southern California that teaches Crystal Healing, and Crystal gazing at a shop called "Kindered Spirits". I might drop by this Thursday and see what it's all about. :)

How fantastic that you are being taught this, myself i use reiki to find out negative energy and then use the quartz to draw it out, usually through visulisation and placing the quartz onto the body, then meditate on the crystal to find out whats wrong, i use both clear quartz and the coloured varietes.
good luck in your studies:thumbsup:

I figured as such,
not a crystal ball. I am not sure if that affects anything though.
beryl and not crystal spheres were developed in Europe around 500 A.D. if they did use a sphere, then they are not practicing fully a Shaman techique of North America.

I believe there is no harm in that. if some reason you can not get to study under the Shaman, then maybe it's not meant for you to . and you should study at that person in southern California.

Time for a quick response only.... your right abut crystal balls.. not used within the americas as a whole in the past but there are isolated instances of them being used by the toltec culture... but literature is sparse. I'm by no means devalidating balls ... just saying they were not commonly used in the americas.... Europe is another story..
If you have the time check out the totem quartz found in the quartz thread which is stickied at the top of this forum.... it is probably the most widely used form of quartz within the americas...
also.. while there... check out the info on Brazilian Quartz and the cultural uses... much of that has been used by north american cultures as well.. espeically the teacher crystals.
Mt. Ida Quartz was traded throughout north america by natives as spiritual as well as jewelry objects.... I'd say excluding pipestone and the red soil found in the rocky mountain deposits which was used for red face paint the Mt Ida quartz was the most traded mineral in north america before the europeans arrived.

Sorry for ebing gone for so long, but I thiank you for all the help and information you have given me. For the most part I know about what a Quartz has the ability to do, but I can't find any information on how to do what is needed to be done to achieve the desired result. (Speaking in terms of Shamanism, Scrying, and Healing with the Quartz.)
The Crystal Healing class isn't until this comming Thursday, I am really hoping it isn't a Reiki Healing class, and more of the stone itself. :) I will let you all know how it goes.

I finally went to the crystal healing class! I showed her my crystal, and she told me she could feel the energy of it, and it was really "clear" as in clear minded or something. She said it was 6 sided, and it had two points instead of one, whiched helped the energy flow in a special way. She seemed very shocked at the crystal, and told me it was a really special one.
Unfortunately I learned absolutly nothing about accessing information about the spirit world with it, healing with it, or even what the heck I do with the energy I apparently put into the crystal. :(

sounds like you have a double terminated quartz. anyhow for crystal healing i can recommend the book Crystal awareness
by Catherine Bowman. it's about $5USD. a good book for healing meditations and energy. acessing info on the spirit world it can not give.
also look in Wolfsong's crystal thread in te sticky section on info for right this minute.
