MSPs are considering extending their probe into claims of the use of sexual imagery in goods aimed at children.
Holyrood's Equal Opportunities Committee has expressed serious concern about inappropriate merchandise being targeted at youngsters.
MSPs are now looking into commissioning external research to gain more of an insight into the issue.

Well when you have pencil cases, tee shirts in chilren sizes with the Playboy logo on, it does seem they are targeting the younger children with what is considered a "adult image".

No 'sprise' there... But once again it comes down to the parents to buy this stuff for their kids. Or at least watch what they are wearing ect. Brings to mind all of the little 6 year old girls I have seen dressed like hookers... :(

'Playboy' is a product of the sex industry, which does not bother me at all, but I've never been comfortable seeing girls who should be too young to know what the logo represents wearing it on t-shirts, belts, accessories, etc.
I don't think that this is being a prude, just that 'Playboy' should choose to be either a part of the sex industry, and therefore not suitable for children, or a part of the fashion industry and sever its' links to pornography and the world of adult entertainment.

I would just say that it is just a bunny because it is. But it does have an adults only meaning behind it. Why does this article not surprise me?....Oh yes, playboy has been marketing towards teens for a few years now and it has completely slipped past parents without a squeak.
It's parents jobs to monitor what their young one buys and I think that this is the day and age to talk to kids about inappropriate marketing. Perhaps they should take it one step further and refuse to buy from a brand that supports PB even if that particular article does not have that logo. Parents need to be the example more than ever.
I also think that parents are giving in way too easily to todays markets and advices. They are more concerned about being the next modern mom than paying attention to common sense. Not saying that we should go and turn into our parents. But at least learn from thinking back to when you were kid and think about what you thought worked in raising you. And we should also think back as to how glorious our innocence were. Why would we not want our children to not be able to play outside adn roam free like we did. Or watch T.V in comfort without worrying about what those shows are really throwing out there. And I don't buy into those explanations that the cartoon companies want to add something in to make catoons more entertaining for adults. BecauseI think adults are entertained by a good cartoon as much as children are. and the clothe and accessories are making parents fume. Are we going to hear next that adults want something adultis on children so adults can enjoy them better? What a sick thought, but I'm sure that some parents are already thinking that. Not talking about anybody here or in particular.
I'm not trying to change the subject, it's pretty much related. Our childrens innocence and safety is being threatened by marketers and this so-called modern society.

Omg it's so sick how you can't turn on a Tv these days without seeing boobs, or ass or w/e just on a regular show. Not to mention the sexual inuendo alot of shows have these days. Even just regular tv, not even cable channels seem to have gotten alot racier. If I want to watch a show while my kids are awake I don't want to have to worry about them seeing that.
That takes my mind to another thing: Why in like every movie are there boobs and women showing their stuff everywhere? When was the last time out side of porn I got to see a nude man in a regular movie? Hmm? lol

Remeber Matthew Good Bands song, The Future is X rated? I think he just fortold the near future.
But I gotta hand it to youtube and the people put on the oldie cartoons. Today my daughter was watching The Dinosaurs. And I had favorited a whole bunch of Jem and The Holagrams, My Pet Monster, My Little Pony for my daughter. And I also found a bunch old VHS videos in The Bays basement department. She has Beetle Juice, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Rug Rats, Bugs Bunny, etc. We have no cable now, so we rely on movies and short videos. It's far easier to control what she watches just by doing that.
And back to the original question. These PB kids merchandise wouldn't be around for too long if parents stop giving PB a profit. Why can't parents just use their heads instead of giving into what modern society wants kids to be. They are letting society raise their kids. It's not O.K. It's not the "new norm". But that's what I'm hearing parents after parent say. They have a nerve to tell me to cool it and say that i'm over reacting. I say they are not doing enough for their own children.
Modern parenting (bahh) I think some parents need a parenting sometimes!

Nothing surprises me.
I'm sure I will be in the minority here, but I don't really see the big deal. Yes, it's part of the sex industry. No, I do not think children belong in the sex industry....
However, I am much more irked by my children being exposed to violence then to sex. If I had to choose, I would rather they have something with the playboy emblem on it then a gun or a battle scene.
Yes, you can't turn on tv without seeing something sexual. But it's even harder to turn on tv without seeing something violent. Even in kids shows. A Superman cartoon shows the aliens ripping someones heart out.
So given that, I don't see what the big deal is about a playboy logo on things.

It seems like these days, even though in only 28 lol, that parents seem not to care about how their kids dress, or what they are exposed to. My daughter has just turned 8, and I see girls her age dressed like hookers, no kidding. It's sad that parents would buy these girls this kind of *sexy* clothing b/c it's the cool new thing. I can see wearing almost nothing if you are going to the beach or the pool. But to the grocery store is a bit much. What is it teaching these girls anyway? Not self esteem, that is for damn sure.

It's not a chose this or chose that kind of thing. Saying you'd rather have your kids into sex at a young age doesn't have to be O.K either.
Parents need to be protecting their kids from predetors.
I kind of find it funny how people are so adamnent on being responsible for protecting their cars and they do what they can to protect their cars from theifs by installing clubs and enablers.
But when it comes to kids, parents doll them up and allow them to be exploited. I'm not talking about beauty pagaents, I'm not going their becauseI have mixed thoughts on that. But just in general. The clothes are getting more inappropriate and suggestive.
What next? Baby thongs?

If it was up to me I'd make my daughter wear huge baggy turtle necks till she was like 50 lol.
Even though I know that's not going to happen.... It is still my job to protect her anyway I can, and letting her wear *sexy* clothing at 8 years old isn't one of them. She knows the diff b/w cartoons/tv and real life. So that doesn't bother me as much as the thought of kids at younger and younger ages are having sex. I saw somewhere (news I believe) where kids as young as Elem. ages are having oral sex. WTH....

I heard that as well.
My old caretaker told me he use to live in a whole bunch of reserves and he knew of a girl that was pregnant at 9 years old!!!!

Yup wouldn't 'sprise' me at all. I used to work at Pizza Hut and this girl there got pregnant at 11 and had her at 12. Her mother let her keep the baby...... I think alot of these girls that do sexual things at a young age were not taught and were not taught self respect.

You can say this about things regarding Playboy targeting young teens with icon clothing:
http://www.thenewts.net/media/albums/images/website/adobe_paedofile.jpg
Remember Adobe portable format does not have thoughts about your children. Although Gary Glitter did admit to saying that the children he was having sexual relations with did not say they were 12 as he thought they were older.
Riiiiiiiiiiight and I don't post on here for the ambiance feel of the sight.
Playboy are targeting younger children with clothing and iconic merchandise. Rulers, pencil cases, small children's trainers. Even the shop carries the logo on the windows. It is blatant advertising and that in itself if in a popular shop with the logo outside however small will be seen by kids and the desire to be the best dressed for showing off will appeal.

I agree but I have to make an exception to those girls that were raped or sexually abused.
And it must be so incredibly hard on a 12 year old to have to grow up so fast. It was hard enough on me at 17.

Gary Glitter? Was convicted of child porn in 1997 after his PC broke down only for PC world to find indecent images of children. He was then released and went to the far east later convicted of abuse of 2 children and was banned from entering other countries and is now back in the UK under restrictions.
Glitter was a Glam Rock star in the 70's. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UWa7V17n2no One of his songs. The title suggests other things now he is convicted.

That's so long ago. I was too young to really care about the news to hear of it.
A 70's rock star? Never heard of him or his band.

He was thrown out of Cambodia last year for child abuse. Normally its this guy who goes looking for the type of "fun" that makes children look older in years than they really should.

You could always try encouraging them not to be ashamed of it. As for Playboy, there's a distinction between nudity and porn. Hustler is porn. Just sayin'.

I don't mind normal nudity. It's just skin. But porn and porn messeges in childrens attire is wrong. VERY wrong.

It's a rabbit's head, and the symbolism is being sexy. I can see not wanting a six-year-old to have a Playboy icon on her T-shirt, but I still think the whole thing's way overblown.

It's the meaning behind the bunny and the ever increasing sexualization and exploitation of children. Some of us are finding that childrens innocence are being robbed over the sake of popularity and being the coolest parents and having the coolest kids. I know I wouldn't dress my daughter in that way but I care and worry for those others that can not speak up for themselves because they don't understand what exactly those other parents are doing to them. And we are growing concerned about what else is lurking behind the corner on kids trends. It's never going to stay at 1 thing. It WILL turn into another, more provocative thing after another till their is no innocence in children at all, at any age.
Parents are not over reacting, this has become mainstream reality. Even if parents do give into these perverted fashion scemes, the messege is out there and kids are listening loud and clear. Parents can only lecture and hold the wallet.
Like I said before, what next, thongs and hooker booties for babies?
