I first heard of her after marrying and moving to the area where my husband grew up.
All the kids in that county grow up knowing this legend which has been documented to be true.
The Bell Witch was actually a spirit that tourmented the Bell Family.
NPR did a documentary on the legend this morning which prompted me to post this thread.
They are sponsoring a play according to what I heard on NPR, I'd love to go to the play.
But the cave? The Bell Witch Cave? Hubby has tried to get me to visit the cave with him many times....but I'm not going!
Following is a link if your interested in learning more. This is just one of hundreds that will be listed in your search engines.

I have wanted to visit that cave for years!!
From what I understand there has not been any trouble for many years now, but I would really like to experience the "vibe" there.

Your right. No documented trouble from her in years and years.
When we first married we lived in Adams. At a birthday party I threw for Hubby one of his friends went out in my front yard....calling her....taunting her....teasing her.
I ran out the front door, tackled him and drug him back in the house. "Not here." I told him. "If you wanna mess with her do it at your house."

If you're interested Cowgirl, a friend of mine named David Alford has written a play about the Bell Witch that he's directing here in Nashville - performances are the next few weeks - check the arts section of the Tennesean :)
David grew up in Adams, and graduated from Juillard in NYC.

If your interested and in the area my sources tell me (thanks Azure!) the play is at the Old Bell Witch School - Oct. 19th, 24th, 26th, 29th and 31st at 7PM.
Or at the Nashville Children's Threater Nov. 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th
at varying times.
You can PM for ticket information.
Another interesting note: The part of John Bell is being played by a desendent - I believe a 4th generation grandson, who is also the owner/operator of a local funeral home.
John Bell and his family (expcept for his wife) was tourtured by the Bell Witch who some believe to be the spirit of Kate Batts. John was said to have been killed by her.

I'd love to go and see and experience the cave. I've always been drawn to things like that. My mom used to worry about me becuase I'd dissappear for hours walking through the old cemetaries in town.

I love hearing stories of ghosts and monsters, especially when they're true. I've had fantasies about meeting with a powerful ghost and chatting with it or exorcising it.
Has anyone hear heard of the Chupacabra?! Ask ANY native Mexican, they'll tell you plenty. I'm interested in it since there's so much evidence (and clear sightings) that it exists.

Right now I'm down in San Antonio, and since it's getting closer to Halloween and the day of the dead, people are starting to talk about montsers and stuff. I've been hearing about the chupacabra, and also a good one is the La Charuz (sp) I don't really speak spanish so the spellings are probably wrong. I find the mexican folk lore a very interesting topic.

ooh i went to the first site, and it was very interesting. stuff like that fascinates me...
there's a resturant here in town that used to be a hotel. it's haunted by a young woman who was a prostitute, and was caught by her "boyfriend" with another man. he threw her out of her upstairs window and she died.
as a part of my horror literature/flim studies class, we took a "field trip" to the woman's room. it was creepy.

As Witchy Cowgirl points out, Middle Tennessee is full of ghosts. There are Civil War and Native American sites everywhere which have rich haunted histories.
I work at Belle Meade mansion, an antibellum manor house that is haunted by both former residents and its famous horses (they bred the famous Iroquois in the 19th century, who's blood lines are said to still be in all the great American race horses).

He's a Dutch heavy metal artist.
Cowgirl - my friend Joy used to be a docent at Belle Meade, and she and others used to go upstairs at night as guests were coming for events and stand in the light, creating a silouette in a hooped skirt against the upper most window in the light.
When guests arrived, they would ask who was upstairs and Joy, who's a talented actress, would reply - "Why no one! The front bedrooms are roped off (she had stood in the doorway, which still was visible from the drive). The guests were scared and happy they'd seen one of the legendary ghosts ;) Usually, they were already semi-drunken business people there for some sort of corporate event on the grounds.
The most haunted place I've been to around here is the Carter House - it's really uncomfortable.

Here's a story about a ghost from my area. Highway 20 is VERY close to my home.....I've actually looked for the boy but have never had the pleasure of meeting him.
There is said to be a stretch of haunted highway in Oklahoma, where Highway 20 runs just east of Claremore. In the winter of 1965, a woman named Mae Doria offered a ride to a young boy who was hitchhiking along that road. Upon reaching Pryor, the boy asked to be let out of the car in an area where there were no houses around. When Mrs. Doria asked him where he lived, he simply replied "over there". She looked to see where he meant and when she turned back, he was gone! She immediately stopped the car and looked all around, thinking that he might have jumped out, but he was nowhere to be found.
Ironically, about 2 years later, she was talking to a man about strange experiences. When she mentioned this phantom hitchhiker, he knew immediately just where she was talking about. He had heard about the phantom boy being picked up along Highway 20 since 1936.

Azure hit the nail. He is a Dutch metal artist. The Bell Witch album was a concept album covering every aspect of the known history of said Bell Witch. Very good album.

I love love love ghost stories. I remember reading about the Bell Witch when I was in Elem. School.
My favorite show is Haunted History on the History Channel.
There is a local magazine, Weird New Jersey, that writes up all the local ghosts, it is a terrific magazine. Hubby and I saw a ghost almost two years ago driving out of our town. It was crossing the street in front of us. He keeps saying we should submit our story to it. :)
