In the previous Practical Rune Magic post, I discussed the 1st Rune charm in the Havamal. Here, I will discuss the 2nd charm. We'll call it "Health".

You will need: a votive candle, a candle holder, & something with which you can carve into the candle.

To invoke "Health", or healing, cast a protective circle, calling on the Norse/Germanic Gods/esses to the cardinal directions. Carve onto your candle these Runes: a Sowulo on the "east" , a Kenaz on the "south", a Laguz on the "west", & an Uruz on the "north". Chant/sing/speak each Rune's name as you carve it. If you're not to squeamish, put a drop of your blood on each Rune. Envision poor health being replaced by better health, either for yourself or a loved one. Put the candle in the holder, place it "directionally", light it, & let it burn 'til it can't burn anymore.

You can carve this charm into wood or clay & carry or wear it.

Here's to your health!

Rather than luck, I'll wish you the wisdom of Odin, the far sight of Heimdal, the strength of Thor, & the passion of Freya. Happy Runing!

(Thanks in advance for the dirt.)

Thanks for the Rune magic classes :) very appreciated, keep 'em coming!

Should one use a certain colour candle?

Ya know, when I give this lecture at the psychic fairs, I try to stress "practical". On one hand, there's candle magic, on which I'm no expert. Seems I recall from somewhere (Gods! I wish I HAD done drugs in the '60's, so there'd be a reason for the flashbacks!) that blue is associated with healing; black absorbs negativity, & white (good general purpose candle color) repels negativity. Red (vitality) might be good, as might gold, or yellow. On the other hand, practicality says, "Use what you got!" (OK, it's bad grammar!)

Hey, out there, any better suggestions on candle color for healing/health?

Vinga

Really? Red for healing?

Well I too think that blue is associated with healing, and black absorbes negativity and white is never wrong =) . But when I read your reply, Vinga, I really agreed with that aswell, it seems awfully familiar. ;/
So I guess you should just be practical and use what you've got... =) Well at least I will =)

Silver Venus

Thanks for the colour reference list Vinga!! :D
Ive always thought Orange was for healing and health but can see how you go with Red ~ everyone has different feelings with colour so just go with what you feel! Go with your instincts again!

Emy
May 16th, 2001, 11:53 PM
Oh I agree, go with your instinct... it doesn't matter if you have ten books telling you to go with blue, if your heart tells you to go with green, then you should definitly go with green! Although a chart is nice to use when your instincts doesn't tell you much... =)

Did a little research. Aswynn, Thorsson, & others give lists of Runic correspondences, including colors associated with the Runes. The "anchor" Rune in this charm is Uruz. The corresponding color of Uruz is dark red ("blood" red). Interesting, eh?

You seem to love using runes, do you use any other divinatory methods you like?

Rick
July 9th, 2001, 01:48 PM
...well, let's see...

Professionally, I read Runes, Rune cards, Rune sticks, Runic palmistry, Medicine cards (animals), wolf cards, chicken guts (OK, just kidding on that one :D )...

I kinda piddle with scrying mirrors, crystal balls, pendulums, divining rods, & speaking boards (more commonly known as ouija)...

I also used to read tarot, but I was never very good at it

Any particular reason why you call it a speaking board instead of a ouija board - I can imagine doing that because people assume ouija is something to play with... but then you probably have your own reason. I use tarot cards, runes, a crystal ball, a pendulum, and the ouija board on occasion. You also into faeries, dragons, herbal witchcraft, or anything else really cool and interesting... ?

Yeah, something like that... ouija kinda seems to carry a negative conotation (see the thread in the 'Divination' Forum).

I was into Dragons for a while... don't know much re: the other stuff, but I think it's cool...

Um... well, no. I'm not familiar with that aspect. Uruz represents primarily physical strength & physical health (and yes, raw, wild power, energy, & vitality. It is a Thor Rune, & a fertility Rune). In this working, it's presence reinforces or strengthens health & physical well being.

I suppose, as Uruz literally means "aurochs" (a wild European bison, now extinct), it could represent slow, subtle changes (as in "plodding ox"), but it could also represent sudden change, or sudden release of energy (as in "wild ox").

Hope that helps.

"That other I know which all will need,
that leeches list to be:
on the bark scratch them of bole in the woods
whose boughs bend to the east."

Merry Meet to you,

I have someone in my life who's x-wife is no longer able to take Chemo or Radiation due to her heart. The family is scared. Can you suggest something that I may cast to help ease the transition or increase healing energy for her?

Merry Met,
A few months back I started a thread asking about healing spells and rituals, thats how I found the rune charm. A few people answered me with some helpful information, you can check it out if you like.

This is fantastic! More! More!

Question: When you say
You can carve this charm into wood or clay & carry or wear it.
What do you mean? I assume you mean that you can carve the same runes into a block of wood and carry it around or make a pendant out of it for the same results, but I'm not sure since the rest of the post is about the candle.

Another question:
I have some STRANGE results when I try coloring a rune with blood for magical intent. Am I just not used to the energy that blood puts on a rune, or could it be something more worrisome?

Yes, I mean that you can carve this same runecharm in the prescribed manner into a piece of wood or clay and carry it or wear it for the same results (the results will probably happen more slowly, but will probably be longer lasting, as well). The post is about practical rune magic, not candle magic, per se. Using a candle is simply one of the most practical ways to use the runecharm without a significant amount of knowledge of runes, runelore, how to make bindrunes, etc.

Another question:
I have some STRANGE results when I try coloring a rune with blood for magical intent. Am I just not used to the energy that blood puts on a rune, or could it be something more worrisome?
Hmm... don't know... the only results I get from staining my runes are more powerful workings...

just adding some more colours and general meanings that came to my mind
black - bannishing
white - blessing
red - life force
green - growth
dark blue - spiritual protection
purple - spirituality
yellow, gold - money drawing , solar energy
silver, ivory: lunar energy
pink - healing

of course in the context of healing the assosiations would be:
pink, general healing
and teh other colours would be slightly different in interpretation / adapted

also you could use the chakra colour of the corresponding chakra

Teresa
May 26th, 2005, 12:44 AM
Blue and also Green candles are good for healing and health type of candle spells and perfect for carving sigils or runes into! I hope this helps. And CW is right You could also use the chakra color for a particular area.
