I'm so sad! We came home tonight and found that our tiny cherry tree (which had *really* taken off this year!) had been half eaten by some type of catepillar. :( There are only a few leafs left on it. My sweet husband is out there right now at 11:40pm spraying what's left of it so the catepillars won't eat anymore of it. I sure hope the dear little tree can survive this!

Caterpillers have taken over KY, too. It was miserable at the Beltaine Festival ~ they were everywhere! :(

It may find a hard time budding this year...

...give it some TLC, prevent this from happening in the future, and your little tree should be just fine...

A little luck, and a prayer or two couldn't hurt though.

;)

Were you on vacation or did it happen all in one day? If you find out what kind did this please post I'd be inteested in knowing.

No, it all happened in just a few short hours!!! I don't know what type of catepillar. It's very small and light green. I'm totally freaking out about the rest of our trees now! I've seen what those nasty gypsy moths can do. I'm truly hoping that's not what these guys are! We have about two acres of woods on our property and another three or four behind us.

EW - it had just finished budding. My husband thinks that maybe the catepillar eggs had been on the leaves and they all hatched at once today. ??

Oh NO! I have been reciently forced to seperate from my mandrian orange tree, which just started to bear edible fruit ( we had to sell the house) so I understand how one can get attached to trees. ( I raised that tree from a "baby"!)

Catapillers inch away!
Bother my tree no more this day.
Forbidden this cherry you will be,
Go and find a broccoli tree!

Maybe that will work, catapillers hate bad poetry. I am sure if you say this three times over your infested tree there will be a tiny U-haul pulling up shortly.

Best wishes for your tree,

Bless,
Cybele

Hope your Cherry tree gets better very soon Hestia! Ive gone all sad now thinking about your poor tree ~ I know how much its hurts ~ Those horrible ugly catterpillars!!!!

Last night I had a bit of a disater too :( ~ My boyfirned decided to open my big kitchen window (which i dont do for one good reason...)~ Only to knock off my two favourite most prized flower pots ~ which were there empty as I was planning to plant new herbs in next week on the New Moon ~ I had to put on a brave face and comfort him that its all ok (because I screamed intially ~ lol) but inside my heart wasnt very happy. Or well at least there werent any plants in them yet but I just loved the design and size of them and know I wont be able to find them again because I got them from Morroco!!

Thanks to all of you. This morning she still had the remaining leaves left on her, so hopefully, she'll be okay.

SV - sorry to hear about your flower pots! :(

I'm so sorry, I've had a few plants and trees that have been attacked by slugs. I never knew that they could be so destructive. Any thoughts on how to fix the problem without using those nasty chemical slug repellants?

There was a thread in the green room on slugs I'll bump it up for you.

I'm very sorry to hear about your tree...how horrible....:( Ya know what might make ya feel better (if you have the room in your acres of woods that is) go out and buy a baby tree and plant it near your cherry tree....maybe the new company will help it get healthy again!!

Actually, I was walking in the woods tonight noticing how many "transplantable" trees there are on the outer edges of the woods. We have a whole grove of wild, young maples whose trunks are still only a centimeter or so thick. This fall I plan on transplanting a few of them and a few of the mulberry trees that are all over. Thanks for the great idea!

That sucks about your tree, Emerald Sky, and about your flowers, Silver Venus. Good luck with transplanting those mulberry and maples. :) I can sort of relate-- my just-starting-out-5-inch-tall sunflowers died a day or two ago. :( What's worse is that I killed them myself. Overwatered. My mom keeps warning me against planting things--I seem to have an unintentional knack for destroying them. :(

Heh! I love that. :)

Small green ones? Like inch worms? ::shudder:: Inch worms creep me out. Dropping on unsuspecting people from on high.
