I wanted to kind of create an informal, anonymous poll. You can answer in the thread if you WISH to, but you certainly don't have to comment here. You could just answer the poll question. I understand that many people are uncomfortable discussing their bodytype/weight. So....anyway..you get the point. Here's the poll.

OK, let me explain my answer... I said perfect... but there really was no... just normal, but could use exercise thingy to check off...
I am normal weight, but my BMI is a bit high (for where I want it to be, is good otherwise).. could use a good workout a few times a week...

BMI of 23, pretty strong from years of swimming, pretty flexible from yoga - I'm so lucky. I haven't actually changed shape since I was 15 - and I'm now 32! It's more genetic than anything, my mother (now 59) is still beautifully slim.
I just have really crappy skin on occasions - Exzema sucks. And I have really big hands. But I'm happy with the way my body looks...

I'm slim, slightly toned. I'm perfectly healthy all-around! My BMI is well within the "good" zone, too. Hehe, my secret is a combination of a vegetarian diet and yoga. ;)

I had to answer "other." People see me as petite and athletic-looking. Genetically, I have a muscular body type. But people think I weigh less than 100 lbs and wear about a size 3. Totally not true. I weigh around 120 and can wear anything from a 4 misses to a 13 junior. I am small but have large bones. I am at a good weight but since I developed fibromyalgia, I can't say that I'm the picture of health because I can no longer work out the way I used to.
I learned in one of the human development classes that I took in college that there is only twenty percent of your body that you can work with to change. The other 80 percent is genes and there's nothing you can do about that. In doing some research, I found that my large rib cage which causes me to be straight up and down comes from my Cherokee heritage. People of this tribe have large rib cages to accomodate their large lungs, which gave them more capacity for physical endurance.
Nina
October 25th, 2002, 02:53 PM
Bet you can really belt out a tune with that lung capacity, Freyja!!
Yep, there's a lot to be said for your genetic heritage. My (wonderfully cuddly) Dad gave me a hug last time he saw me and said "you look just like your Mum on our wedding day!" I love my Dad. They got married when they were both 24.... ((((DAD))))!!!

:T Belt 'em out, yes......as for carrying the tune......sometimes. My voice is a lot like Cher's, as she says "I have limitations." Interesting that she is also Cherokee, and my kids say that I remind them of her.

I'm 5'5" and 110 pounds. Yes.. I gained 10 pounds. :p
I put thin as a rail.. because people say I'd blow away in a stiff wind.. or when I turn sideways and stick out my tongue I look like a zipper... or I could fall through a crack (my dad used to say that all the time 8O).
So, yeah. Thin as a rail. :D I think it's mostly genetic as my father is super-thin. My mom's kind of chubby.. and my sister is following in her footsteps. My brother is somewhere between my dad and mom, though it's because he's lazy. :( He doesn't move unless he has to. :wah:

I was gonna choose the perfectly trim and fit option.....but when softball season was over I took a break from my workouts and now have a little toning up I need to do.
Most folks view me thinner than I view myself.
And Hubby would like me gain 5 - 10 pounds.
But I like myself where I'm at except I need to tone up.

Valnorran

I voted "other". I'm 5'10" and weigh about 220. I'm not obese, and I don't think my bones are particularly large. Durable, but not large. I've lost count of the trauma my legs have been through that should have broken them but didn't. Also had two wonderful possibilities for skull fractures, by my granite cranium came through for me. I'm fairly muscular, but the mass isn't as well defined as it is on a weight lifter. It's merely the by-product of learning how to use a longsword. I expected to gain a little muscle, but I had no idea it would be so much. I weighed 176 when I got my first sword (4 feet long and 4.5 lbs). About a month later I was at my present weight (and I still have the same 36 inch waiste I started out with, so it wasn't the result of the feasting table :)). Sudying the sword has really packed the mass into my upper back, shoulders, arms, chest, and neck. My legs are also quite strong, though I do nothing to maintain them. My mother has speculated that it might be from the footwrok of swordplay. All I know is buying pants is no fun. I usually have to by a 38 waist to accomodate my thighs and butt. Dress shirts are also a hassle. Wearing a tie is no fun when you've got a 17 inch neck and sensitive skin. Coats and jackets can also be trouble. If I'm wearing them I usually can't reach all the way forward with both arms because its stretches too much along my back. I was never very flexible, and gaining muscle has only worstened that. I can't scratch my own back now. Nor can I touch the floor without bending my knees. The backs of my legs will stretch taught like piano wire long before my fingers get near the floor. I'm a better swimmer under the water than I am at the surface because I sink. All in all, I'm built along the lines of a live oak, just not as flexible as one.
Gwion
October 26th, 2002, 12:31 PM
I used to be able to reach over my shoulder and around my back and clasp hands, but there is a trade off between muscle mass and flexibility. Especially with swordplay, you have to fight to maintain your flexibility. It's easy for me to spend time at the gym, but not enough yoga and stretching. A hot jacuzzi is priceless for loosening up, but just can't replace vigorous stretching. Your legs are getting plenty of workout just with remaining en garde. That will beef up your quads like crazy. Your toes may look miles away when you reach for them, but it is the effort that counts. I know what you mean about clothes. While there are stores that cater to the "tall & portly" man, few but sport stores carry anything for bodybuilder types. Jeans are especially a problem in getting a pair that is big enough for the thighs, but small enoug for the waist.

well, I'm fairly tall and rather big, but I'm well-shaped and (despite that idiot doctor when I was a little girl), I'm not really obese. Anybody with half a brain who hugs me can see that most of my weight is in my breasts :D and that I'm very solid and strong. Not flabby or anything. I can hold my own on a hike or bike ride or swim. . . *smiles*
The only problem is, for reasons which would sound strange but which I do understand, my mental image of myself and sense of where I am is about 5'2" and probably close to half my weight.
(if you care to know, most of my memories of lives before this, I was rather small. Not petite, not skinny, not tiny. . . strong, well-built. . . but rather small. *chuckles*)
Hence, I have earned my mother's reaction of
"DAMMIT BETH, YOU'RE LIKE A BULL IN A CHINA SHOP!!"
edited to note - I really annoy short people, because although I am above-average. . . you will often hear me saying I'm too short. I have this complex that I'm short and small. So you can imagine how annoyed they get when they actually are smaller. My profound apologies! 8O

I put other. I'm normal. Not quite fit. I too have that darned gut. The only working out I do I hauling to the apt mailboxes and trying to get to class on time. Tu and Th- stairs. I'm about 5'5 and 125-129, depending. I hit 129 fall and winter months and 120ish spring and summer. lol. I was 114 once, but that was because I was sick. So 120 is about as low as I can go. I like food, food is good. My friends now this about me very well. I'd make a terrible anorexic, I get bee-yotchy when I'm hungry. As for the genetics part. I must have some paternal aunt's genes. My mom is, in the pics where she's about my age, 5 feet tall, and kinda chubby, and her boob are like a size bigger than mine. Dangit. *stares down* GROW! Looking at pics, she got chubby for a time, too much trunk. Heh, look like I'll be 'hoofing it' a bit. I have like 5 pics of my dad, and well him being dad it's kinda hard to compare. Oh and even though it's irrelevant, my mom started going grey when she was 18. Yes many bad hairdye jobs. She's (looking at pic) now 42 and whitehaired. I apparently have my dad's hair genes. I'll shut up now.
I don't have many pics of myself. I'm the only "photographer" in the fam. IE, give my grandmother a roll of film, and she'll finish it in a week to a month. Give me a roll, and I'll ask you for 3 more in an hour or less.

I second that. When my wife became pregnant with our first child I was worried about her looks. I kept this to myself, ashamed for being so shallow, but there it was. Much to my surprise I found her condition to be exceptionally attractive. I can only attribute this to the fact that her body was doing what it was designed to do - create life. It was the ultimate act of femininity.

I picked other - I am slim-ish (68 kilos and 5'7") but more curvy than chubby. I have no idea where this comes from, as no-one from either side of my family Is built like me.
When I say curvy..large chest, flattish tummy (although because of the insulin injestions it is more rounded than I'd like!) and an ample backside. I don't put weight on my hips or thighs... The rest of the women on my mum's side are flat chested, and big-hipped, and the women on my dad's side are thin as rakes.

people say I'm thin but I think that's just because my measurment round my waist is small. I'm short so really I think I'm in proportion.
I'm 5ft3 and weigh 105lbs. When I was young I was seriously under weight and was nearly taken into hospital to be taken care of. I was also very short and was told I wouldn't be taller than 5ft o.o;

Cajime, it sounds like you and I have very similar body types - I'm 5'2" and 104 and lately eat like a horse, but I find if I go without food, I tend to gain weight, and if I eat like I want I stay very small.

ok... I haven't voted yet for two reasons. At first I couldn't figure out which would best describe me, and now because... there's no 'Squishy' option! That's what I've been calling myself lately. I'm around 5'5" and... well... I don't know pounds... I'm 65 kilos if anyone wants to do a conversion. I wouldn't mind losing about 5 kilos, but I'm mostly happy with myself.

To Flar7: How do I delete the extras????? I would like to know how, cause I would like to.
Anyways, to SagaDraco and Cajime:... Finally some others who have the same thing as me!!!! *hugs both of them* People tell me I'm to thin and I need to eat more, but I often eat more then they do in one sitting! *blush* Which, considering the size of some of the people telling me this, it's an amazing feat....
Anyways, my friends around here often tease me about being negative in weight. It's not to be mean, it's just our joke. Or, we go the other way, by stating an oxy moron.. "I'm just to fat, I'nm the size of a whale" and then we end up cracking up because we all know that ain't even close to true.

Hmmmm... Why do people assume that because someone has a weight problem they eat more than thin people? Every skinny person around me eats MUCH more than I do... They're just blessed with a better metabolism, I guess.
Even though I'm overweight, I'm in better shape than most of the thin people I know. I found that surprising when I realized it! My best friend, who's 5'5" and weighs around 120#, has always been athletic. We went to the Y together and she couldn't keep up with me in the pool as we were swimming laps. After two or three, she was exhausted and hung out at the end of the pool, watching me finish my half-mile.

I wasn't saying size as in weight, I was saying size as in hieght. Most of the people telling me I need to eat more are over 6 foot, and eat A LOT. Most the people I know who are overweight(wether slightly or not) Don't really eat much, they just have it stick to them better.

I am sorry, I misunderstood your meaning since you didn't specify height vs. weight...
I've just had some bad experiences with people who are very rude and vocal about thinking I eat constantly since my food sticks to me better than it does to them :D

I'm 5'3 and weigh about 120 lbs. Sometimes I weigh 130 lbs (like, in the winter), and sometimes 115 (when I'm lucky). I started exercising again, cuz I have two kids and I just turned 30, so it's just a tad to easy to go from toned to flabby these days for me. Right now, definitely NOT toned. But I was on fire today with all the exercise gadgets, and we'll see if I can't make it through the winter without gaining all that weight.
My aunt's stuffed mushrooms at her annual Christmas party are gonna be the death of me! I know it! ;)

Mareth, no biggie, I can understand you misunderstanding. My sister Megan looks heavy, standing at 5'5", and weighing about 150 last time I remember her standing on a scale with me in ear shot.
But, it's not fat, it's all muscle, she's in great shape. *shrug* It just depends on the person.

Well, since this thread has been bumped, I may as well contribute.
I could stand to lose a few pounds. I'm 6'1" and about 230, but I have a large frame and I'm relatively muscular, so really all I need to get rid of is the extra baggage around the middle (as me and my friends say, "I don't have a six-pack, I have a pony keg!")
Still haven't gotten rid of those pregnancy pounds, I guess. ;)

While I would probably like to lose 15 or 20 lbs, I am within a normal weight range. The only time I have "issues" with my body is when I am trying on clothes, or shopping for them. When I am naked, I think I am beautiful... :bigredblu

I'm pretty skinny. I'm 5'6 and weigh about 112. The reason I'm a twig is that I'm allergic to gluten, so I can't eat all the good stuff. Which pretty much narrows my choices when it comes to food.
I'm also active, do the yoga thing, bellydancing, swimming, hiking, chasing my kids. I'd like to be able to gain some weight, but if I did I'd have to buy all new clothes. Yesterday my mom was shopping for my daughter, and bought us matching outfits fromt The Children's Place! How weird is that.

That reminds me of the dress-up date my boyfriend and I had a couple of weeks ago. Girls gave me angry/hateful/jealous looks, middle aged men drooled, most guys almost dropped their jaws, some teenage guys whistled, and at least one guy honked his horn.
Though I hate being objectified, I must admit it was a bit flattering, and I liked those looks from the girls - it's always been the other way 'round.
I finally realized that I have the body everyone else seems to long for...

Big boned for me...now this is a cop-out that a lot of people use which really bugs me, because it makes it look really bad for those of us that really are.
Anyway, I am a little overweight, but I am certainly not obese and my legs and my arms are solid as rocks...just a little chub on the tumtum. On top of the big bones I have a clinically overdeveloped musculature (read as "body builder without trying") which makes me weigh more than I look and be far slimmer than most women would be at my height and weight. For instance, when I was a sophomore in highschool I was almost hospitalized for anorexia when I got dangerously thin...I weighed a little over 140 pounds and I am only 5'6". Some of my friends who are taller than me look chubby at 140, but I had that scary lolly-pop (head looks too big for body) thing going on. Go figure.

5'9" tall and about 270 lbs. Obese? yes. Do I look terrible? Not really. I have a figure, and I carry my weight well. I wear a size 22. I'm large chested and full hipped. I carry a bit of the excess weight everywhere, but mostly in the "childbearing apron" - the abdominal skin that women get from multiple pregnancies.
I'm 34... and I'd LOVE to be thinner and fit into a size 14 again. I'm also large boned, and I know that for ME, an ideal weight is about 160-170 lbs (having been so sick when I weighed less than that). The problem is getting there without starving, and without going crazy.

I suffer from that perpetual 10 lbs I can't seem to ever lose, there's that little extra padding in the tummy and the fanny that I'd be happy to lose. Actually, according to the insurance charts my weight is about right for my age and height. I still wear a size 10, but usually buy a size 12 for comfort....

I put perfectly trim, but I'm not as fit as I'd wish. I am very skinny, because of my metabolism and the fact that I eat very little (I don't get that hungry and when I do I still don't eat as much as others..unless its a really good food). But I'm not AS skinny as a rail. so um. yeah. 8O
*edited to add* I've heard from lots of people that I have a body people would kill for. Funny how I seem to dislike my body...don't like being stared at lol.

her dad is an Arab who's parents came from Armenia.

Ok, this is confusing because, this is more of what I think against what many people I know think. Technically, by doctor's scale, I'm 'obese' because I think obesity now meaning being '20 pounds or more overweight from standard weight according to your height and age', and I'm definetely more than 20 pounds overweight. I think being 18 and 5'3, I'm supposed to weight 125-135 pounds, or something close to that, and that I'm surely not! But because I have a "hourglass" figure, I appear to weight alot less than I actually do, at least according to people I know, who could be lying but, hey I'm trying to trust their judgment. I'd say I'm 'big-boned'.

Hmm, interesting responses. Some people tend to judge themselves through other people's eyes, and then will be very cautious and even excusing while responding.
Wouldn't it be more honest to yourselves, if your response were guided by your own take? Why simply repeat what others tell you (or tell others behind your back!)? Why not try and find an answer that suits *you*, one that connects to your own personality?

See now that's what I thought.
Technically I am overweight ( two kids sixteen months apart can do that sometimes), but personally instead of thinking that there is a thin person waiting to get out, I have a hunched up tall person waiting to stretch , i'm five foot three.
In all seriousness though, when I met my husband i was a size eight to ten, then we had our first son and seven months later i fell pregnant with our second son. I figured it wouldn't take long to lose my baby fat, except now my youngest is two and a half, so it's more like toddler fat.
I can't say that I love all the lumps and bumps, but then they don't bother me that much either, except when skinny shop asistants say "they're very small sizings, you know"with a s******y smile. In which case i think why don't you just say i think your too fat.
I sometimes wonder if people actually think that larger people don't realise they're fat and that they need to do us a service by telling us and anyone in ear shot.
All in all i say if you have love and you pretty much like who you are and you feel healthy inside, ENJOY. :fpeace:

Then perhaps you want to ask yourself, what right do they have? If your self-image really doesn't cope with reality, shouldn't those people get you some help instead of getting angry? Otherwise, wouldn't it be best if they'd be as honest to you as you are about yourself?

I voted "Thin as a rail" for very obvious reasons.
I am 6'0 120lbs. and have been 120lbs. for as long as I can recall. I cannot gain weight no matter how hard I try (not that I really care to). I have lost weight before, but immediately gained it right back and never went a pound over 120lbs. Granted, I just had dealt with strep throat, got well, and two days later was sick with it all over again, forcing me to not eat at all really and I lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks.
If I get any thinner, the very wind will carry me away.

Well, having been small all my life and then boom, kids and marriage giving me a "mother's" hips, I have had to deal with my negative self-image again. I had problems in undergrad (anorexia--5'3" and 99 lbs), so now I'm about a size or two from where I want to be (size 8, would really like to be a size 6!), but I'm sooo much closer than I'd been when I was in my 20's (I've dubbed them my "fat years" LOL--I was up to 155 or so after I had my first son), that I'm pretty happy with myself in the main.
If I could get off my duff and exercise and stop indulging when the hormones hit every month, I think I'd be fine. But my discipline has slipped big time...

I've always been teased about it too. I think it's just cruel that this happens too anybody.

Hmm, just noticed this thread, so might as well add my response...I'm a bit overweight, but not a lot. I'm squishy and curvy. I'd like to lose about 15 pounds, because my BMI is a bit high. Most of my weight sits on my belly and my inner thighs, but my arms also need some toning up. Sometimes I feel pretty comfortable the way I am, and sometimes I freak out about it. Of course, my hubby is *obsessed* with his weight, so we're both basically on a constant diet. But he does claim to love the way I look.

I remember being relieved back in my senior year of high school, as I didn't weigh enough to be bullied into giving blood. (have since changed my tune about giving blood, but I digress..)
Since then I've gained about 40/45 pounds. The weight isn't what bothers me, it's the itchy stretchmarks and the fact that my clothes never fit right. I'm short, so buying stuff in my waist size means I usually have to do some hemming. :P
I'd love to lose about 25 pounds, but the couch is soooo comfortable... Getting motivated is a big problem...

I've recently found out that the reason I've been unsucessful in losing/keeping the weight off is due to a hormonal problem which is also affecting my fertility. I meant should it matter to anyone else. It matters to me. It just seems we live in a world were ppl are constantly judged by their appearances. And it's not right. I guess I'm just testy. I live in a family where I am contsantly judged about my "fat ass, thighs and hips" by my moma nd sister. The same sister jsut got out of the hospital about 2 months ago after spending 2 months in the hospital because of anorexia. One thing she repeated over and over "I didn't want to get fat like Mikki." (Mikki is my birthname) Still, after all that, I hear it over and over and over from my mom--man your ass is fat, etc etc. I try to ignore it. I even told her how it makes me feel. But this is a woman so self-sentered, she doesn't hear a word I say. It's why my first words was "Does it matter?" Yes, it matters to me. But why should it matter to someone else if I'm fat or skinny? I'm not an obese slob that doesn't care what I eat or how I look or anything. I've been struggling with my weight ever since I had my daughter a year ago. I've got 30 more pounds to go to get to my goal. I do care about what I eat, how I look and how much I weigh.
I'm not trying to sound rude here. Please forgive me if it sounds this way.

Standing up for oneself won't be interpreted as rude.
Obviously your appearance matters to them, as they fall all over you. As long as you're happy with yourself, you shouldn't mind.
I had a situation some time ago (not appearance related but perceived generocity), of which I thought, "you shouldn't worry about it, you should've surpassed that by now, you should know better". And still, it bothered me.

I had to vote for "Other" because I am neither perfectly fit nor overweight and certainly not thin as a rail. I'm just right, but less than perfect. I'm 5' 4-1/2" tall and weigh in at about 130, wearing a size 6 or 8. But I detest exercise so I cannot claim to be fit. My measurements are approximately 37/29/38.
Peace,

I have an hourglass figure...I fought it for my entire life, until one day a stranger came up to me and said that I had a goddess figure! That was one of the nicest compliments I've ever been paid!

i'd say freakshow, but in a "i live in a freakshow in a circus" kinda way - far from perfect, not absolutely hideous (that took a lot to say that), unusual to say the least....

I'm 5'3 and well...we won't get into weight. For a girl it's too much. But it is from genetics, I come from farming and mining families. So yeah, I might have to shop in the plus sized section but I can still pick up my sister who is 110 and toss her. What can I say, if I had been born a few hundred years earlier I would have been a perfect farmers wife, or if I would have been born two feet shorter I would have been a hobbit.
